Part 1 of 2 | A "Pop-Up Video" style collection of some of the punk & hardcore tracks that Mike Patton has covered throughout the years with his various projects. Each track starts out with a clip by the original artist, then is followed by Patton's cover. (Track listing below)
______________________
Some people may argue that certain tracks aren't necessarily punk, but more hardcore or thrash or whatnot. All I can tell you is, coming from a background where the majority of influence came from most things "punk" related (back when far too much time went towards contemplating the next mohawk color, and when heavy, loud and offensive were vital necessities), there was a huge amount of crossover between punk/metal/thrash/hardcore (etc). In the area where I spent most of my adolescence we were all the same kids, in the same group, listening to all of the aforementioned. Our "clique" (if you will) was more defined by each of us being a general reject that didn't belong anywhere else, rather than us being divvied up by specific musical genre preference.
Even though I'm now well into adulthood, not much has changed for me as far as the kind of shit I'm into and my overall philosophies on life (however it does seem more difficult to rock liberty spikes after the age of 40). Over the many years that have passed since my youth and throughout several different conversations with like-minded people, I realized that almost every person I encountered and spoke with regarding the subject has their own personal idea of what "punk rock" really is. So all I can offer in terms of definition is what punk has always meant to me.
To myself, growing up and now still, punk rock was always more of an ethos or ideology more than anything else. Sure it's a certain brand of music, but it's also the underdog. It's the loner kid trying to make his way through life, or being the only voice in a crowd that's willing to speak up when something isn't right, or standing up for those who aren't able to do so themselves. Or even simply having the courage to be yourself, at times when it would be far more convenient to blend in with the masses. No one enjoys feeling ostracized. I've admittedly struggled with having the balls at times to say, "You know what, that's me. If you don't like it, then fuck off." I would think most people could relate on that. Sadly we live in a culture that has always feared "different", and looks upon those who choose to go against the grain as instigators.
To get more on point, I've always viewed Mike Patton as being completely punk rock in that sense. Dude has always done whatever the fuck he feels like - in an industry that banks on consistency and well defined labels so they can sell their "product" in a nice, shiny and tidy package. It's never surprised me that Patton has punk and hardcore in his musical DNA. This (two part) video collection is just a little tribute to that. And to everyone who chooses to travel the more difficult (and often times lonely) road towards being themselves.
