An edit from the Angel Dust sessions/burger interview I threw together highlighting Godflesh's influence on Mike. The song he's working on the second clip is Malpractice. It's nice seeing that one of my favourite artists ever was influenced by my favourite band!

I'm surprised that Patton was a fan of the mighty GODFLESH, but I think once anyone (with any taste) hears the first ten seconds of "The Avalanche Song" or "Christbait Rising" there's no turning back. This was my case upon hearing them waaaaaaay back.

If you're surprised a musician heard music, or that a musician likes music, that sounds like narcissism.

No surprise at all for us at the time ... wasn´t uncommon for Mike to be seen sporting Godflesh shirts . Put it like this ... 1st time I saw Naked City ... late 89 or 90 ... well, we were all expecting Yamatsuka Eye from the Boredoms - to our surprise Zorn announces Mike Patton as the surprise guest for that tour - this was when he was breaking Big with FNM right after " Epic " . Put it like this , perhaps there was still a few people who hadn´t heard of Mike Patton by then ( suspicious nonetheless ) .

@@saraivatoledo1842 The Faith No More singer met Zorn when Patton’s other band, the genre-juggling art-metal outfit Mr. Bungle, invited the composer to produce their 1991 self-titled debut. Soon after, Patton and other members of the group started working with Zorn on his own projects, starting with Elegy, a 1992 album combining avant-garde chamber music and surreal soundscapes.

@@overthemountains7207 Oh masn , I just deleted a wall of text , your comment made me relive all the albums and concerts I have attended / purchased which include Zorn in one way or another ... I saw all those things live : Naked City , imagine them not only having brought Patton unannounced pre gig but also opening with what was the , by then , unreleased " Grand Guignol " ... after that it was nearly almost all " Torture Garden " songs played to perfection ... oh yeah , Zorn having dedicated " Pigfucker " to Mick Harris ( even by then ) . Not sure if it was 2 years later or less but Painkiller followed ... now , mate ... if you have never witnessed Laswell in a live environment ... I urge you to prioritize , that shit was the most insane improvised set I have ever heard in my life , save for " Handjob " which Mick Harris , having left his drum kit ( go figure , he had a mic there ) , came and dedicated to us , metal/punk kids , probably for causing a pretty insane racket in the front rows , putting off all the " Jazz snob eat shit " types in the audience ( the majority , mind you ) . Anyways here , I go again completely offtopic . Thanks for the comment man , has brought so many great memories , specially from long gone fun times and friends ... yeah , man , Zorn will probably be remembered as Morricone was/is . Patton must feel incredibly proud to have had the chance to collaborate that deep with such a music legend ... btw , remember having read an interview with Diamanda Galás where she´s asked whether she was up to a collaboration with Mike Patton ? To which she responded with a question : " ... oh wait , I know who you´re on about , that little shy boy who is always in the frontrow of my concerts and has till now been unable to find it within himself to come and meet me in person backstage ? He´s he alright ? ( This was at the peak of FNM´s fame btw ) . Oh shit , deleting one pretty incoherent wall of text and replacing it with another , probably even worse ... oh well , thanks a lot for juggling my memories 1st thing in the morning ... class .

Slateman, which was released as a double A side single in 1991 is a great chunk of Godflesh, people. Both timeless and, at the same time, ahead of it's time. Best place to find it now is the Slavestate compilation album, also from 1991. Quite mad they put out a compilation album in 1991 then went on (off and on) for another 32 years; although it was a compilation of ep tracks, singles and split releases. Good place to start with early Godflesh. Songs that founded their legacy.
