Nice to see that old engine and Generator running up to rated speed. Most often when these machines run in museums they barely tick over, giving a false impression that they were intended to run that slowly. It’s understandable that they are old and no one wants to work them too hard.
@davida1hiwaaynet
@davida1hiwaaynet 2 года назад
Awesome. Thanks for taking the time to share this with us. The sound of the engine at "rated" speed is amazing. I can only dream about how a powerhouse back in the day must have sounded. It seems like, maybe, the DC generator could need a different belt ratio so that it can see more RPM's without the engine being at such as high speed. It's so good to see that this machine still is alive and well!

Really good stuff here. We used to pull traction motors apart and set the armature into a 55-gallon drum with 4 or 5 100-watt lights in the bottom and a heavy blanket on the top. They'd sit for a week and then megger excellent. Sometimes old-school works best!

Great to see this old stuff still able to produce power. I did wonder about Mike's comment that another 80rpm would put the voltage up to 120. Surely, at the time these were in use, the standard voltage was 110?

You should see the riding lawn mower that I'm working on. It started life as a Yard Machine by MTD I replaced the stock 18 horse Briggs with a 27 horse commercial Briggs I had to have a custom double pully welded together to get it to work. The steering gears were stripped so I modified it with a hydraulic steering that was designed for an outboard boat motor. I built a new steering console where the battery has been moved from under the seat to under the steering console. The fuel tank was replaced with a 5 gallon racing fuel cell that is now under the seat. I'm also building a new front grill to replace the broken plastic POS that it cam with. I have it framed out including a 13 inch fog lamp to replace the head lights. I'm also going to install custom rear fenders to give it more of a classic tractor look.

Many of those engines and generators were still in use up till the 1960s befor REA brought AC to rural towns in the south - My grandfater started working on gens about 1900 - the old power houses for towns had 55 large 2 volt lead acid cells - A engine and gen would be run 2 hrs in the morning and 2 hrs in the evening to charge the power house batterys - they were fully charged all day on friday - I think those cell might have been 100 to 200000 amps - some were the size of a pick up bed and about 5 ft tall - The strength of the acid was 1.210 or in areas that never dropped below 0° it was 1.195 strngth acid - They added sufates to decrease the acids resistance - With weaker acid lead acid batterys last longer than 60 yrs of cycling -the plates dont rot and swell in weak acid or flake and shead material - They also dont sulate as easely in weak acid and easily desulate when equlized -

1:38 that's a stupid reason, they could setup a temporary bath to dip it with an end of life batch (which would be perfectly acceptable for an antique) and then that's that, it's a normal bake from there. New companies can get real lazy. Reminds me of that story Jay Leno said about the impellers inside one of his steam cars. That he had to shame the company into making the same part saying "your great grandpa made this and you can't?" (paraphrased). I've personally had to deal with this kind of no-go attitude in my field (architecture, specifically in old building restoration) with stuff that wasn't even half a century into its life time. 'we can't do this, because x and y' - oh, but they're awfully upset whenever you send business in another country.

Blackstone...old British engine, far more common in Europe than in the US. Those oil engines can be hard to get going but they're made to run around the clock. There used to be a Bremen Caloric hot-air pumping engine in a shop close to me. There are probably only 20-30 of those engines known to exist.
