Circa 1992, Mike Rowe (host of Dirty Jobs) worked in (very) late-night TV selling crap to idiots on QVC. He used the opportunity to its full comedic potential.
I think Mike had a fan who was a stoner who loved getting baked and watching him and just laughing his ass off. Me and a friend used to record Dr. David Viscott's Call-In Show, which some genius decided to put on tv after Saturday Night Live here in Los Angeles... so it always felt like you were watching an SNL skit that was bombing, but we'd be so high we'd forget he wasn't doing comedy. It was so absurd. I actually think that show was the inspiration for Frasier.
So much contempt. Technically, he's selling the doll, but the "fuck this doll" subtext makes this video - and every other Mike Rowe on QVC video - incredible.
OMG, I wouldn't even have recognized him if not for his voice. He has definitely improved with age! Every time I find myself watching QVC, I wonder how the hosts manage to go on for 20 minutes about most of the things they're showing, so it's funny to see Mike grasping for something interesting to say, and making up his little stories. QVC is a huge waste of time--Mike made it efficient, if you actually wanted to buy some ridiculously overpriced art dolls.
To all the people that thought that he was doing this while his bosses were grumbling...they LOVED IT. Before he came along their overnight sales were abysmal. It was a time when no one watched but losers who had no money to buy crap. But he made hte overnight block somewhat popular and sales went up.
oh. my. god. These videos are some of the greatest videos ever. I love you for posting all of them, so much. And nothing is better than hearing the crew in the background laughing. LOVE THIS!
A hundred bucks for a total piece of shit, and people never just buy one of these, they get hundreds of them and can't even resell them because they're worth about a buck and a half.
Yeah, you're right, Mike looks a hell of a lot better today then he did here, I think he gained some muscle after leaving this soul sucking position. Kinda reminds me of George Clooney, he looks better older then younger.
I loved watching these old QVC videos. I used to watch QVC, but haven't in years. I never would have thought to have taped and saved shows. How did you end up having this old stuff around? Do you only have Mike Rowe stuff? I used to enjoy Jeff
haha your right. I havn't read that book since high school not to mention I'm doing biochem as a major which requires no literature to graduate. You win this time Mike!
I wonder who his poor producer was. I can only imagine them getting called into the office and being asked what Mike is doing and the producer saying I have no idea, I didn’t hire him, you did.
Did you notice how frightened that doll looked after he put his hand under her skirt to wind her up Then, he had to do it again, Poor doll. I feel bad for her, The mouse found it humorous though, He was smiling because he was sick and tired of hanging out in her stupid stocking and looking like a fool.
I'm ashamed that I know the words to the song. It's BIZARRE that they used the song from "Mickey's Christmas Carol" for a completely unrelated (as far as I know) porcelain doll. I
Didn't QVC fire Mike for his sarcasm and irreverance towards mass produced crap? "I was just pettin' it, George." Yes, that really happened. The singing of the made-up words to the song pretty much sent me over the edge. Sarcastic smile @ 3:22... epic. "Oh, the indignity..."
I have the biggest crush on this man. I have to say I prefer the current version to this one...way too pretty. I like the receding hairline and lines on his face. But what really makes him sexy is his humor and I guess his blue eyes help a bit.
The reason he got this job is because of a 100$ bet with his friend. His friend dared him to go into the audition and if he got the job he would get the money.
