Over a seven year period from ages 30-36, Schmidt slashed .281/.387/.561, won 3 MVPs, 6 Gold Gloves, and 6 Silver Sluggers and was a World Series MVP. For non traditional stats: -His lowest OPS+ during that stretch was 149, the only year he didn't lead the league in OPS+ -Led all third basemen in Total Zone Runs twice and was top-4 four times -Led the league in WAR once and was top-5 six times (for position players only, he led the league in WAR twice and was top-4 6 times)
Greatest third baseman of all time and my favorite player as a kid to watch. He was a great defensive third baseman, and he hit over 500 home runs. Won the World Series in 1980 with the Phillies. Hall of Famer!!!
When I was a kid Schmidt was the best player in baseball He is the greatest all-around third baseman in baseball history Equal to Matthews offensively and his better defensively ✌️ Bunting down the third base line was not much of an option with Schmidt at Third No disrespect meant for Brooks: Robinson was indeed the best defensive at third base over his career. Or ditto Brett : He’s great f course - But his good medium power plus batting titles as great as all that is Doesn’t outdo the combo of lots of walks and lots of homers of Matthews and Schmidt.
Yeah, I thought he was safe too. And some of the plays they chose to show were routine. They could have put this together better. I'm sure they could have found a lot more "incredible" plays. He made a lot of them. He didn't win 10 Gold Gloves for nothing.
I remember a lot of these especially when he caught the kite against the Mets he made the bare handed play look easy obviously Michael Jack is the greatest all around 3rd baseman ever.
Schmidt had bad knees, he couldn't make the acrobatic plays Graig Nettles and Brooks Robinson could make. This is the best you'll probably see from Schmidt. Schmidt did have a strong arm and good range, but he gets too much credit for his defense.
Grew up in Pittsburgh in the 70s... hated Scmidt. Lived in Philly late in his career and began appreciating he was the best all-around third baseman in history. Ended up living in the same town as him in Florida now, see him out places from time to time. Fun fact tying in Philly fans insanity, late in his final season I'm at a game. Phillies ending bad season, won't make playoffs, losing late in the game. Schmidt pops up, out, and the Philly fans booed. Greatest 3B ever, greatest Phillie player ever, and they booed him for popping up late in a blowout game at the end of a bad season.
@@larrycopeland2413 Yes, and it was in 1988 his final real season. As I correctly stated, and also correct the Phils were deep in last place. Wow, how sad your life must be to be patrolling comment sections waiting for chances to say someone is wrong. Congrats - you can google but not comprehend. BTW... I lived downtown on Walnut St. Used to take the Broad Street train to the Vet after work. Often get there mid-game and box seats could be had for a few bucks. That game I was on the first level above the field by the visitor's dugout, front row on the railing with a buddy, drinking a Schmidts and eating a soft pretzel.
@@a1aprospects470 "Wow, how sad your life must be to be patrolling comment sections waiting for chances to say someone is wrong." No, my life is not sad at all actually. Too bad you can't take someone pointing out that you were incorrect on something you said. For the record - I grew up in Chester County and remember the shocking day when Schmidt retired (i.e. no Google required). Have a nice day.
@@larrycopeland2413 His last full season was 88 and why you felt the need to try to prove someone wrong about their own memory... beyond lame. Feel bad for you. And chester county ain't philly. Much of it is another world. Your attitude wouldn't have lasted long in my part of philly.
@@a1aprospects470 I don't disagree that Schmidt's last full season was '88 - but that's not what you said in your original post. But whatever, it's ok.
Just looked at it frame by frame. He got the runner by one frame of video, based on the center field camera. But I can see why someone on the first base side would say the runner beat the throw. It was THAT close.
"manny mota doesn't say anything..." standing right there as first base coach, Mota didnt argue. but yes, we'll take your negativity as a serious point
Having watched his entire career, I still say Schmidt was the equal of Brooks Robinson as a defensive third baseman. But this video is a joke. Many of the plays shown were just routine plays and only a couple of them were among his greatest defensive plays.
Not according to the statistics. Santo did have a higher career batting average, but Schmidt had more HR and RBI. He also had a higher on-base percentage, slugging percentage and OPS+. Schmidt played more games and more seasons, while edging Santo in fielding percentage .955-.954.
