I was in my twenties when this album came out. I found all of the songs so transformative. Here I am, now at 68 and still love this album as much. Interesting....
I'm 50 yrs old ..Mike and the mechanics have been the soundtrack to my life ....amazing band ....from a time when music was great and you actually cared about who was number 1 in the charts
AS a fan of Chris Thompson, Steve Perry, Bobby Kimball,Al Jarreau, and so in, I habe to say Paul Young is and was amongst the most impressive Singers all ever. Thanks for Bering on this planet, Paul.
What a song! Paul Young god rest his soul had a most fantastic voice! Teamed with Paul Carrack they were a truly brilliant band! I’ve just bought their greatest hits after all these years and this song is ramped up every day on my journey to work! Utterly iconic 😘
Another great classic from mike and the mechanics. I think mike Rutherford is one of the most prolific song writers ,he’s been churning out this stuff for over 50 years and he’s still doing it,well done mike.
I love the opening sound on this track that goes around in a loop. It must've been stamped into my brain permanently. Ever since childhood that sound randomly comes into my head from time to time. Paul Young sure was an excellent vocalist and his voice fits this song perfectly.
That's the reason I had to look up this song. It really does just pop into your head for no reason. I was just making tuna casserole and then this came into my head, I don't see the connection. 😂
I remember listening to this song for the first time, back when the album came out. It still hits me the same way. I loved and really miss Paul Young so much. No one will ever be like him!
Sadly our radio stations didn't give this one much promotion and it was never played. Then the song was in an episode of Miami Vice. I was so ticked that radio never played it. Bought the 45 and still have it today.
Cool! I remember hearing it on the radio for the first time years ago, didn't know it was on Miami Vice, as I never watched much TV period. I did like Don Johnson and remember he has a hit too! (Heartbeat) 🙂

Reconnecting with this album today; it was a favorite of mine when I was 13 (I'm now 43!). I can't believe how fast time goes by, I remember the lyrics as if I heard them yesterday.
@@danielr4640 Due to both UK singers having the same name, I need to clarify things to avoid any confusion. The Paul Young shown in this video was the former frontman of 70s pop rock band 'Sad Cafe' (who had a UK Top 3 hit with 'Everyday Hurts' in 1979), while the other Paul Young is an 80s solo artist, who has had hits with 'Wherever I Lay My Hat', 'Love Of The Common People' and 'Everytime You Go Away' . He's still alive and well, but the former died of a massive sudden heart attack at his home in Altrincham, Cheshire on July 15th 2000. He was just 53 years old. A huge loss.
This is propably one of the first songs I remember from when I was little kid. My parents used to listen to this song and whole tape while se were driving in our first car ever few years after the iron curtain fell.....omg.....it brings back so much memories.....❤️
The first time that I’ve heard of Mike and the Mechanics was when they had come out with the song “ Silent Running “ which came out in the 80’s some time and from there on, I had always liked the songs that Mike and the Mechanics had put out! I had always liked Mike Rutherford when he was with Genesis too!
The living years album is a special and precious album to me first of all it was my first Mike and the mechanics album I owned and to me this is just an amazing 80s pop prog album well this is a perfect 80s album to me
Right, perfect. My best friend recently joined a Paul Carrack concert. Joyfully . But as far as I like to hear this man, Paul had a lot more. He was amongst the best. I also miss him. ...by the way...some of the these guys are still active...Joseph Williams together with Bill Champlin, Chris Thompson or Bobby Kimball (with Silvia Vicinelli)

I'm not sure but don't think so. The song was used in an episode of Miami Vice in which one of the detectives is revealed to have a gambling addiction. I thought it was quite heartwarming as when the song is playing he is rock bottom, stands his girl up and not showing up for a date . Indeed nobody's perfect.
This was actually my favourite Mike and the Mechanics song. Why it never did well here in the States I'll never know. Take a close look at the bloke who ends up getting busted for inside trading. If I didn't know better, I'd swear that was Chris Eccleston! It's possible it was one of his brothers. Either that or an amazing döppelganger! (Could not have been Chris, he would have only been 20 or 21 at the time. How do I know? I'm only three years younger than him, and I was around 17 or 18 when this album came out, that's how.)
Christopher Eccleston does have two younger brothers that are identical twins and apparently all three are virtually indistinguishable from each other. As for the bloke in the video that you mentioned, he's probably just an unrelated lookalike.
For a vocalist of Paul Carrack's skills to be relegated to a bit part of this amazing track shows just what a vocalist Paul Young is. Listen to Sad cafe's Everyday hurts and you will see what I mean.......
