Wow....once again Roachford's vocals really lend themselves to a Mike and the mechanics hit. This song has always been close to my heart after losing my own father as a young man and remembering the good times and bad times we went through. Dad I miss you so much and I thank you for everything you taught me in the time we had together. 😢

I can't say that Roachford's vocals are not good on this new version because they are really good. But there is something about Paul Carrack's voice that communicates the message of this song for me on a different level to this version.

A voice like peanut butter; Soft and creamy with just enough grith to scratch all the right itches.

Rarest version to hear bass guitar on which mike added along side with Luke juby’s Yamaha s90 moog synth bass pedal sound which is only used live coz mikes normally doing that famous rhythm guitar riff in which anto drennan is doing on this version alongside with his lead strums during choruses pretty much 😭

I had many differences with my Dad, it wasn't until my 30s that i resolved them,sadly at 49 i lost him.i wish he was still here, i have so much more i want to say. This song made me resolve those issues and difficult times we had when i was a child wat back when this was released. Do it today, go see him, son or daughter go to him and sort it, then enjoy your time you both have left together. RIP DAD (John) Thanks BA Robertson (check the writers version) it was his experience in the lyrics he wrote. just copy and paste this (ba robertson living years above ) and also you will hear the name of the young babys real name from the song, and there is a surprize at the end of video(i wont tell you,it will spoil it), you think this version makes you cry watch this one the way it was meant to be.

can't believe someone would find this good, they couldn't have ever heard the original version, doesn't deserve the "Mike and mechanics tag "

so now I'm "only" missing far more women in this and of course: Jimmy Somerville and/or Sir Elton John + Freddie + Pavarotti. But so far this is the best version I know of this world song except I'm too missing the childrens choir in "28 days later" (Choir of Trinity College, Cambridge & Richard Marlow) as the background singers...

Much as I love Mike and his Mechanics, I wonder why he chose to re record what was a perfect classic pop song with outstanding production, in fact two, including ' Beggar on a beach of gold' ? Paul Carracks vocals absolutely nailed it the first time Around , and much as I like Roachfords voice, Caracks vocals have a certain resonance in the gentle verses and blistering choruses that Roachfords don't. Apart from that , Mike's songwriting is dissapointing and predictable these days as if he's just lazy. The production on the old albums is superb, keys are up and centre,drums micced up big, but on these new albums the productions a bit ordinary 😢

I prefer Paul

Great vocalist, but he doesn't match Mike's vibe. It's like a New Yorker getting a Tibetan to sing songs about life in NYC. It sounds faked.
