Although this may be working at the moment, we are actively working toward a more permanent solution. Stimming is something that will naturally change as she grows, we just want to make sure it does not turn into a different unhealthy habit. If you are looking to try these mesh thumb guard gloves, they are tagged in this video.

I love how when she first realized she couldn't suck her thumb and you reinforced that the gloves weren't going to come off, she went in for a hug. I saw that as her continuing to seek out a source of comfort to ease her growing distress💚

It’s possible that the gloves also reduce sensory overload in a way. My friend’s autistic son won’t touch certain things because he doesn’t like the feeling on his skin. He actually starting eating things he previously refused to eat once they gave him little gloves to wear to touch the food with. Would strongly recommend getting Mikko in speech and language therapy ASAP if you’re able. She’s clearly very smart and is actually trying very hard to communicate verbally which is amazing. I’m extremely anti credentialism and don’t believe certifications give folks magical powers. But I’ve seen lots of therapists with experience help kids tremendously.
@amberlee4536

As an autistic person myself, I have always felt that skin on a chalkboard is a worse sensation than nails. That's a screech in my ears. I also have ADHD and like genres like screamo and metal. I can handle that. Touching a chalkboard with my fingertips is screeching on my skin and that is Not Okay. Velvet is also pretty cringe.

sorry i don’t mean anything negative by this but only to raise awareness. i am very aware you mean good and no harm🤍 saying to us autistics that we have superpowers can be very harmful. it has lead to burnout by trying to reach the expectations put on us, the majority of us think we are not good enough if we don’t have something extraordinary. a lot of autistic people don’t have “superpowers” and we are just as valid, we don’t need a superpower to be respected or accepted.

@@hectormarroquin6788 i don’t need to understand what they said or their intentions to know that the word superpowers has affected me and many autistic people. we talk about this in our community. certain people read and move on and don’t know that there are autistic people who don’t have a “gift”. we still struggle we are still autistic because we are human, we don’t have superpowers.

I'm autistic and sucked my thumb to stim for several years, then moved on to biting my nails amongst other things after my parents got me to stop by constantly reminding me. To get me to stop biting my nails, they bought a product which I dipped my thumbs in and then if I tried to bite my nails it would taste disgusting.

Dis she say at the end “I did it , and “you got it” ? 😮 She is flourishing by leaps and bounds, and mama….. there isn’t a word or words expressive enough to describe how amazing you are. You and dad, and her sweet siblings. Y’all are killing it, frfr! P.S. Mikko baby, you are one strong cookie to handle that thumb guard. That instantly took me back to when my parents actually tried putting band aids and tape on my thumb to get me to stop, and 45 years later, nothing has worked or changed, 😞 so the fact the she lasted a whole day and took a nap (which is the most important/needed time for thumb sucking) is totally impressive! ❤

Stopping sucking your thumb is a hard habit to break! I sucked my thumb too! My mom said I had to stop before kindergarten so I would get made fun of. There was a boy that was in 1st grade that still sucked his thumb so she would say you don’t want to be like BJ do you? She used the nail bitter nail polish that tasted very bitter. She would let me suck it at night for awhile so I would sleep. Even after I stopped she said I would suck my tongue sleeping still made the noise! I needed braces since I had an overbite when I was older! I hope it worked even after you take the mesh gloves off!
