I had to look it up coz like no way it's that old, but yep the song was synthesized in 1961, so it's been 63 years then. But was gramps born with the song?? Or does the development time count too??? And is the time it was floating around in some dudes brain like the pregnancy???????

I mean, really? I’m not educated on vocaloids but Miku’s prototype was named daisy and that name was based on Ibm 7094 (the grandpa). So canonically they are related in a way. But how can you say all of them are related to Ibm 7094? But hey, that’s just a theory. A VOCALOID THEORY!

I like how both the stache and his trousers are a bit dull and washed out from a long life, next to his bright and shiny grand daughter. And yet, he still puts on a smile and sings for her.

It's crazy how context can mess with our minds. Usually I hear this clip of the male computer voice singing being interpreted as "creepy" or "unnerving." But just put this picture over it and it's hecking adorable.
Well, to be fair, the creepy contexts usually include some distortion and other little changes to the audio here and there as well to make it more unsettling
The second computer made to have a voice was LPC, made in Japan in 1966. So if this LPC is Mikus grandmother, it would explain Miku's nationality. How sweet

For those who would like context, Hatsune Miku is a vocaloid, so her voice is computer generated and controlled by a chart. The older voice belongs to the ibm 7094, which is the "first computer to ever sing" since it was the first computer generated voice that actually managed to sing. This, of course, gave rise to a lot of technology that could also sing, including none other than vocaloids, so the vocaloid fandom considers the ibm 7094 to be Miku's grandpa. They're both singing "Daisy Bell" which is the song the ibm 7094 sang. Ironically, the ibm 7094 wasn't even made to sing, but was capable of doing so. I was today years old when I learned about this, and oh my God it's so wholesome, I'm glad I learned about this.

I remember that many Tik Tok users said that the song was scary and they used it in "Fear" videos. But in reality the song is the opposite and more than scary it is cute and impressive, being the first song sung by a computer
While in this context it's extremely touching, it's incredibly hard to disassociate the song proper from its most famous usage in popular media. It's like someone who looks like an aged out Wall Street exec singing "It's Hip to Be Square" to his granddaughter, they're probably fine people, but all you're thinking about is all the dead people from that one time.

I watch this video when I want to cry. Because it makes me so dang happy-- a family tree of computers, who we have given voices and personalities-- and we keep them alive. Is there anything so beautiful?
This version, I'd be shocked if anyone found it anything other than adorable. Any other version, including the unaccompanied 7094 one? Kubrick did way too good of a job associating it with a psycho killer AI losing its mind for me to see otherwise.

For anyone wondering, there is a difference in ethics between an AI singing and a Vocaloid Singing. The Vocaloid is a human voice which has been recorded with consent for the explicit purpose of being sampled and used to create songs. The original person sampled from is paid for their work. Vocaloid songs require someone to create a backing track, check samples, and measure through every note, et cetera. It is possible to make money off producing original Vocaloid songs, because payment is needed to utilize the software in the first place, especially for commercial use. Ai, on the other hand, scrapes preexisting information, and either is built off of multiple, or one particular person, almost always without consent of the party/s used. The people whose voices get used like this are not compensated in any way, and can have their careers harmed as a result, if in the event that they are a singer or voice actor, two jobs which are already frequently exploited.
I appreciate the write-up, but the problem is that it won't convince anyone. People who make "art" with AI are people who do not appreciate it for the fundamental quality of being made by a human who was thinking and feeling while they made it
so from what i can tell from the comments, miku's granpa is a data analyst as a day job who has a knack for singing, albeit not very well but he still loves it
What I like about this picture is that when you just hear the song without the image, it sounds unsettling, but when you look at the image, it sounds wholesome. Music really can change the perspective of something.
This is one of the cutest things I have ever seen, knowing how important the song Daisy Bell is and the fact that they were based on said computer to create Vocaloid (in fact, before being called Vocaloid, it was called Daisy project), it is logical say that that computer has a large number of grandchildren who are stars now 🥺🥹
In my mind, IBM 7094 eventually evolved into HAL 9000 (due to HAL singing Daisy in 2001) which would mean, based on this lore, HAL is a descendant of Miku. I love this head canon canon
