I've had it drilled into me since birth by my Southern mother that one should NEVER invite oneself over to someone else's house. I can't fathom inviting a whole party over. I'd be so offended if anyone ever did this to me.

9 months pregnant?! And expected to throw a party?! Absolutely not!

She needs to set boundaries asap or else it’ll be a nightmare years later

Right! If they are THAT comfortable and intrusive now, I can’t even imagine what it would be like in a few years. They’re already completely over the line, it’s just going to be a nightmare for OP

On the contrary I don’t think it’s petty if you are 9 months pregnant. I would even call you a really considerate person for ordering take out and having them at your house. Dude it’s your house and you are pregnant. Even if you aren’t the most cheerful person you’re actually creating another human.

My ex MIL and FIL were like this, my birthday was 2 days before FIL but i "had" to make sure his cake was made for every birthday and one year my birthday was on a Saturday but they had his party on that day and no one there realized it was my birthday till they saw my birthstone necklace. Lots of boundary issues and ex wouldn't say anything or set them; it ended when he said I needed to make them happy/ they came first

My sisters MIL did the same thing. My sister bought them so many expensive gifts (phones, perfume, skin care etc) and that really screwed her over because now her MIL expects her to do everything financially. Even the money that the MIL promised to pay for their house ( considering my sister and us paid for everything even things that in our culture are the in laws responsibility) she’s trying to lie and say she doesn’t have it.

This is so odd to me, it needs more info to make sense, but it doesn’t need more info to know that she simply needs to ask her husband to communicate with his parents about this.

Pregnancy is the best excuse to get out of doing stuff. Blame the doctor if need be. "Oh sorry. Doc has given me strict instructions to take it easy and do nothing."

Way too many people deal with their in laws for stuff their spouse should be doing. Like, there are plenty of things I can take care of, but I let my husband because we're a joint front.

I'm not saying MIL isn't wrong here, but I've got some constructive criticism for any family stories ya'll cover: cultural context matters. I'm surprised that never came up in the Reddit comments or your conversation. Not to say that cultural context is not an excuse for toxic family dynamics, but it helps to provide insight and should definitely guide commentary. In many cultures, including my own, they're is an expectation that when a woman marries a man she enters into his family and often takes on responsibilities of this role. Unfortunately, this is often an unspoken expectation which is what can lead to frustration and misunderstanding. Navigating this situation can also be more complicated than just 'standing up for yourself'. I know ya'll are just sharing your thoughts, but a bias check every so often I think would be a good reflective practice for yourselves and listeners. Love your relationship hot takes, though!

Totally agree. It could be difficult because redditors many times don’t announce their ethnicities or what type of cultural upbringing they have, usually just the age. In one of my cultures as well it’s very difficult to stand up for yourself to the in-laws. They are definitely speaking from at least an American perspective but I hope as they gain a global audience they have a more open perspective to different relationship dynamics based on culture.

@@ginalovesarashi 100% Just for context, I'm a first generation American, so I often have to explain cultural context to my friends and partners. But I also have Gen 1 and 1.5 friends who don't do this, and it can cause issues. We all need a reminder that sometimes our family values differ from those of our partners, even if we live in the same country and gre up in the same communities.

I completely disagree. Cultural context "should definitely guide commentary" is you excusing toxic family dynamics. There should never ever in any culture be an expectation on a nine month pregnant woman to take this on. She has her own husband, house and life. This podcast is literally named "two hot takes".

I don’t find the situation weird. But given the fact that she is really pregnant I would definitely understand if she doesn’t want to host. I have a great relationship with my in-laws, let’s note that I’m the most shameless person ever, that means that I don’t really care what the subject is I will speak it over with my in-laws. I’m as well someone that doesn’t take things too seriously and I dnt bottle up my feelings. I would literally be, “Hey guys! You know I love you but I’m really really pregnant. I’m not hosting his birthday.” If I wasn’t pregnant “Hey I don’t feel like hosting. You know that I love you but for this one let’s have it somewhere else.” This situation has happened to me quite a few times because I love cooking and hosting but I have a very severe anxiety disorder that sometimes doesn’t allow me to function to the degree that I would like to execute things when I’m hosting and it also does interfere with my job at times. So yes sometimes I’m not able to do this kind of things for them even if I want to. Also, it was me who brought up my anxiety disorder pretty early on in the relationship to my in-laws. I made it clear from the beginning that I’m all the great things their son said but that there is this huge part of me that has been a struggle since I was a child. I understand the whole it’s his parents so it’s his responsibility but all of them are adults. I love my boyfriend and maybe I’m weird but I don’t need him to talk to his parents on my behalf for something that is being asked to me. Hey but this is just me. I’m aware that people don’t usually manage themselves this way. This is coming from a person who is usually described as 31 year old going on 5 years old.
