Most people that barely know enough about a trade, are the ones most eager to post non-stop videos on RU-vid. The experts have better things to do than to divulge trade secrets, like make money. You on the other hand are the real deal. I’ve watched your videos, and you know exactly what you are talking about. Just good to see. Thanks for posting.
Guys like Mark are a rare find! I wish his shop wasn't 2500 miles away. I'm a drag guy who occasionally drives on the street, and yes I still street race. All the guy's doing it I'm my area are in their mid to late 70's! One retired, two died, the other had two heart attacks and only works for a couple buddies, the third guy takes a year (if he's even still doing it). None of them ever had a dyno either. Not that that makes them any less capable. Its getting to be the biggest detriment to the future of the hobby. I went to school for this and worked for a couple shops including Rex Hutchison Race Engines (when I lived in CA) They didn't pay shit, so I wound up quitting to work at a Glass Company. I should have rode it out and started my own shop like I always dreamed of. Its too late in the game to start now. I'd never be able to retire and wind up working until I died like the guys here. Dying breed. No pun intended.
@@VORTECPRO I notice it every time I drive my 68 Vette that has one of your 467's set up like this one in it (609/598). I have not had it on the track, but it is an awesome Dr Jekyll/Mr. Hyde motor. It idles like a pussycat at the stop lights, but will turn as angry as you want it to when the light turns green. Absolutely everything I had hoped for. Kelly in SW Florida.
The secret is in the 781 heads that Mark massages to get every last cfm out of. Been a fan for nearly 20 years. This guy is the real deal and absolutely knows big block Chevy's inside and out.
Is he still around as i don't see any videos less than 3-4 years old? Yeah that be a nice 'drop in' engine for a 67 Camaro, easily mid to low 11's or better with good gearing and traction
Great motor ! Ty for the vid ! Love big blocks especially when their built right and hold ... power and the pull is unreal ! Now to get a 400 trans and actually hits on shifts !
Very well done, Mark...I like how you describe what it takes for your engines and the small details. I also like how you are really into building and refining the old 454cid+ BBC. Your descriptions have answered a ton of questions that I have wanted to know since I began to read the book called, "How To Hot Rod The Big Block Chevy" since I began to read it in the early 1980's. You are a great help---please keep the detailed videos coming, thank you, sir!
Yes I have a 467 myself.I estimate it be around 600hp.forged pop up trw pistons.comp xe294h cam, edelbrock rpm heads with larger intake valves swirl polished.holley strip dominator intake,1" adapter to a holley 1050 ultra hp dominator carb.I think its around 10.5:1 or more compression with the domed pistons.
Hey Mark - Awesome combo, thanks for sharing the details! I called you from Michigan a couple of days ago - thanks again! In a future video, is it possible to see how you put the intake valve notches in the block as well as what you do for oil pan mods? Also looking forward to your next set of "bolt-on - assembled" heads inspection and valve run-out check. Amazing stuff!
Great video mark Keep up the great work impressive numbers for just a mild looking big block but is soon as you step on the gas that’s when everybody’s jaw is going to drop are the prices for this engine on your website
I can attest to this motor and marks knowledge. I had this motor with a slightly smaller carb and unported heads. It was in a 2nd gen Camaro with a stick. On the dyno it made 425 rwhp and 490 rwtq. Basically with ported heads it would have made around what mark showed in this video (500+ rwhp with a stick). Awesome motor.
GOOD #'s there, lots of engine builders dont get that with AL heads, etc. That would be nice in a 1st Gen Camaro with 410/456 gears and a 4 speed, true old school that would tear up the road
SUPERB street BBC for all those Chevelles, Camaros, Impalas, and C series trucks out there! Plus, the idle is more "classic muscle" than today's popular 'thumpers' that can't barely run 12's. This should easily turn 12's in any street chassis and much better in a drag prepped one!.... and sound like its straight out of the late 1960's showroom. MINT! Excellent work Mark!
Notice all the long block cores are 50 year old design production pieces (!?) Nice build, 'mildest' 600hp I've ever seen in a 454! For a high altitude application (6000ft) Will that same Mahle piston hit 11.0 - 11.5 CR unmilled ?? Thanks for posting! Steve
Love your videos I love my big block it's a 427 60 over so a 439 very strong motor next big block I build will be a 496 solid roller if my motor with the 235x241@50 618 lift on a 108 lsa makes 660 hp I don't see why I can't build a 750 hp big block .
I guess I must say I’m very impressed with the build and video! Never knew a stock gm crank and rods would hold 6300 rpm, or was the crank forged? Just curious, as I have a 77 bbc 2-bolt main short block sitting under my work bench. Contemplating whether to go 467 or 496 stroker with it. Will go in my 71’ Chevelle, 400 turbo trans street car, but I want to make jaws drop when necessary lol. Thanks for your hard work and postings!
nice power, but i would go with the most stroke as possible first n a big bore as well, i just like stroking an engine to it's max, gotta take advantage of all the space available, don't y'all agree??
I noticed you said 12 inch of vacuum and 4 degrees of advanced. Was wondering what the total timing and initial timing was? I have a 468 and doing research on timing thx
This is almost exactly what I want to build for my k30 hobby truck. Even have the 781's at the local machine shop but they knocked out the cast valve guides and we cant find any bronze one piece to install. Ive watched some of your 782 head videos, contemplating on just sending you my set for the full workup on them.
I thought you liked the 049 a little better than the 781 on 460+ ci. Can this produce the same results with 049 because I just had a set built to these specs. Also what should I do with my 990's!
Hi my friend I need ask you for original engine 454 big block heavy duty engine for for gmc 1981 and transmission automatic How much cost for this engine and transmission automatic ?
very nice engine, I wish you would show the HP and Torque curves rather than just a print out, The screen shot of the curves provides better understanding of what the engine is doing
i been getting the ho 454 crate engine for free i get them all the time i know a secret that they put the engine in and i get them cheap or free because know body knows what these engines are last one i got only had 6000 miles on it sold the leftovers for 2000 on the paperwork said 450 hp at 485 torque steel crank heavy rods heavy pushrods high flow heads with 4 inch stroke since i found out about it i have got a few of them so far i have not got one over 70,000 miles on it but everyone i have got ran good
Nice engine and good numbers!.. Few things, i've never heard a 60 over 54 called a 67 its always 468. Also wondering about advancing that cam 4deg. What would it run straight up?
No, that was probably over 130 engines ago. 103 VE. King of cams did bail me out on a 421 SBC build though. Question: How come the King of Cams customers NEVER show dyno HP at the track?
@@performanceenginebuilding2850 I've never had heads ported. I've got 049 heads off an old 454. What would you estimate a porting job would cost me to approximate what you did here?
Obviously not via RU-vid... Sucks when the creators don't reply to comments. A channel like this would be twice and nice if the creator would interact more with their viewers.
