I actually ran just the other day two 10 mans with a tempestus command squad attached to each starting on the board, with the command rod on the tempestor prime I was able to give them two orders (1 from them and the second from Solar) when they finally decided to emerge from the ruins I hid them in and just unload into the targets on the objectives. I gotta say it was more powerful than I thought it would be 😅
You can take command rod and grand strategist if you want to deep strike them on to the enemy objective. First rank 2nd rank plus take aim allows you to reroll everything that isn't sustained and not lose many rolls to missing.
@@sean2549 I gave the command squad Solar was attached with grand strategist so that when my scions eventually died to a counter attack I could still give orders to something else, but that said there’s no denying your way has some use as well!
@@sean2549 i feel like 2nd order at close range is better used in +1 armor save rather than +1 to hit. At least if you plan to hit someone in an objective. And even if you dont, that +1 save + cover means you can have 2+ save scions if they get shooted by AP weapons, or be much more durable in melee.
One really underrated use for Scions are turn 3+ 2x5 man drops like paratroopers to sow discord behind lines, do actions, and steal objective, especially if supported by Gaunt's Ghost's that can throw them an order and then fade and come back in next turn. As your opponents screen starts to fail, the threat of multiple 5 man deep strikers that can land and trade 50 points of units for assured VP will force them to have to keep units back protecting their home objective and no man's land objectives, costing them a local board imbalance they they could use to potentially destroy one of your units. It's not always about killing things, it's about winning, which is about scoring consistent VP.
I started a Scion army in 2014 when their supplement codex came out. The one trick I can say with Scions in the Taurox Prime is the fact that you can add two leaders to the unit, which I do a Primaris Psyker and a Commissar. Having the Honor and duty order has allowed me to steal objectives from someone has gotten me a number of objectives. But the big part of it is the Fire Support ability and the Storm Troopers ability affecting the Psychic Maelstrom - focused witchfire to reroll hit rolls and reroll wounds for the devastating wounds triggering to melt a target.
Shouldnt it be better an scion+scion command+psyker on taurox prime? that gives your psyker sustained hits as well, which can be devastating. Besides, commissars cant give shooting orders.
@@guillercuastico 3 10 man squads with command squads in deep strike to reinforce all over the place, 2 taurox with 10 scions, one with double psyker other with 1 psyker and Inquisitor kyran.
@@guillercuastico The other part of my army is 2-3 groups of 10 man scions with plasma/HSVG and a command scion that drop in and clear areas where they come in. And usually have Gaunt's Ghosts to give extra orders and pop in by the deep strikes. And the Commissar is there for Honor and Duty to take an objective from someone with scions popping out of the taurox prime on an objective and clearing enough off to claim it from the enemy. And with Summary execution you keep them from staying battle shocked.
I actually run a Scion led Guard army and having four 10 mans, one 5 to attach to a command out of a Taurox plus 2 more command squads to attach for deep strike is amazing I supplement them with a lot of tanks, and bullgryns it’s game changing and an undefeated list
I know that they can’t be souped in space marines but I proxy tempestus scions as inquisitorial henchmen because my homebrew successor is The Hellbenders and having models with “hellguns” is just too good to pass up. Plus the models just look cool to me I still lament the loss of the Heavy Intercessor’s hellstorm weapons
The 45 tempestus with 3 psykers can erase all infantry on the table in 3 turns. The anti-vehcle is handled by armoured sentinel and the remaining points have been used for armiger warlaive, tank commander, bullgryn, etc.
14:45 I've found that adding an inquisitor to a scion blob really makes them shine. You get a 3+ Command Point refund, so you could use the Grenades stratagem and get the Command Point back. On top of that, you could give the inquisitor a combi weapon and psychic gifts to do some dev. Wounds (even better when the squad jumps out of a taurox prime). Lastly, the inquisitor gains the regiment keyword when joining the squad, so he can benefit from Take aim! Or First Rank Fire!, Second Rank Fire.
Don't forget because of how the datasheet is for the Tempestus command squad, You can take Both the Standard and the medi-pack on 1 model First you choose to give 1 model the Medipack and gives it a Hell gun + others options, Then you give it the standard as it's not replacing the hell gun it's just being given the standard, Now you have 1 model that has both and the other 3 guys can be given Special weapons.
If you want some silly synergy, take the 5 mand command squad with the rod have them lead 5-10 scions, and run it with gaunts ghosts, they can both order after dropping back in and the ghosts will give them that second order while both units order themselves.
Thanks for the info! I intend to rock a command squad, with another 5 man squad attached and slap them in a Chimera to lead my Steel Legion Armoured Fist Platoon :D
Had a funny situation where i was up against chaos demons and the opposition had a changling to hold his back objective. I teleported in my 3*5 man units to take him off it, unfortunately they all failed their leadership and couldnt shoot. Made up for it tho with 2/3 9 inch charges and killed him in melee to my delight. I often like to use 3*5 man units deepstriking. Really good at taking enemy home objective, meaning the enemy has to divert forces away to retake it. Actions monkeys also perfect. Great at resupporting a weakened side of the board too. Definitely want to try a big 15 man units for ultimate damage support especially with lethals and sustained fishing for 6s with 2+ hitting and re rollls. Would likely take some extra for the VP support too.
A combo I like to use is, since Scion squads can have 2 character attached is a 5 man squad with a command squad and a psyker in a Taurox, and a 10 man squad with a 5 man command squad and psyker in the backline ruins with Drill Commander. Staying still, its 5+ crit hits with lethal and sustained, and Psykers give insane damage output and durability for their points both for the taurox squad and the backline squad.
Tempestus Scion Squads can also be joined by two leaders, so they can have a comand squad and an additional leader added to them. Plus the command squad can also be joined by regimental advisors (meh) or an Ogryn Bodyguard. May not be a bad unit to put into reserves and have come on the board later in the game.
Honestly they’ve been fun to fill 6 max 10 mans out with, I just swapped my melta to volleys with plasma. Command squad with rod and grand strategist does a lot too
I used the full 6x10 + 3 comm squads + 3 unitsd of kasrkin alongside 2 dorns and a tank commander. It was fun, and I got to use a lot of cool models, but it felt too weak against the vehicle heavy list my opponent was using. They're just too expensive for their lack of staying power. 1-2 big squads and 1-2 small squads would probably be best, and then using the points to buy chimeras for the kasrkin, and/or more basic troops
With the changes to indirect, the Valkyrie is pretty great for durability and applied pressure (orders make them VERY durable) Also, how could you not talk about 30 scions in a CRASSUS?
@@WilhelmScreamer essentially they can do actions and score objectives if you give them duty and honor, I usually throw take cover on them round 1 then move them to the mid board. The changes to pariah mean you measure from the hull, not the flight stand, so when you’re flying over buildings it’s a lot easier to get around. Also, you can only charge if you finish a move within 5” of the hull - the only parts that are within 5” are the edges of the wings (and landing gear) as well as the cockpit and a bit behind it. Meaning, you can shoot from the tail without providing a charge target in some situations, which is a bit silly. While they don’t do as much raw damage as a Russ, they have an equivalent stat line for defense, which means your opponent has to really focus fire them down to remove them unlike a taurox prime. Now a CRASSUS is actually cheaper with more durability and you can fit 30 guys with 2x psykers which can lead to some pretty ridiculous output with FRSR + fire support when shooting at a unit on an objective. Big problem really just being able to drive around terrain and whatnot. (Though new pivot rules helps a lot, as you can offset it with move move move)
@@Lomhow to top it off, I’ve been running a doomhammer full of lascannons to deal with anything that would want to kill the Valkyries. Between the armored sentinels, Valkyries, and doomhammer all being 2+ saves base with Take Cover, most of my opponents don’t have enough AT to deal with all of the threats, meaning scions can be used to clear back objectives/enemies that thought themselves safe from LoS (though preferably if they’re on an objective before I get out)
I'm not a Guard player, but I do think Scions are good utility and broadly underrated. I do have this weird image of loading a bunch of them into a Doomhammer or Stormlord and carting them around the battlefield in that 😅
Scions (and Kasrkin) are great, I really like the amount of damage they can do as well as the tactical usefulness of Deep Striking small units to grab secondaries. Personally, though, I don't like how much their damage output comes from them being Special Weapon Delivery Systems - I preferred how Storm Troopers worked a long time ago in 4th (I've been out of the game for ages), with fewer special weapons but a really beefy hellgun/hot-shot lasgun (only an 18' Range, but totally ignoring 3+ Saves). I would really like it if their damage output came from their unique hotshot weaponry, rather than the plasma guns and meltas that we see in every Imperial army. My idea for this was to make First Rank Fire Second Rank Fire! order only apply to S4 or less weapons (to make plasma guns less of an auto pick) but more powerful (x2 Attacks - so the Volley Gun would be able to get 6 shots - and +1 to Wound). I also really think that, in an age where all Space Marines have 2 Wounds, Orks have T5 and 5+ saves, and Eldar Guardians have 4+ saves (!!!)...wouldn't it be fair for the absolute best of the Imperial Guard (Scions/Stormies, Kasrkin and similar Grenadier units), raised on a regime of exercise and clad in the best armour available, to get T4? Adding an extra point per model, obviously.
i started in 3rd so my Stormtroopers are the metal with the gasmask like faces. I like the new plastics heads too but don't llike the armor designs. Only have 9 of the metal ones but there is a nice 3d print file i found that matches the style of the 3rd edition models.
I run a full Scion army with succsess. The only thing it has struggles with is necrons. I do also run sentinels because scions really do lack ranged anti tank.
10 Scions with 2x Plasma Gun and 2x HSVG, PP and Power Fist on Tempestor Command Squad with Plasma Gun, HSVG, Master Vox, Medic, Command Rod on Prime Primaris Psyker Take Aim + FRFSRF They get drastically less squishy with a 4+ invul in the shooting phase and a 6+ FNP and can unleash an absolutely unholy amount of damage.
while i like the models and rules and would love to see a full 2k points scions army its actually wayyy to expensive if you dont use 3D prints. these kits are very pricey and at least have admech lvl of points per (insert currency) ratio if not worse. you could buy 2 armies for the price of 1 scions army
Tried 3x T. Command squad + 10 men scions, lot of special weapons. Result: scary damage against non vehicle /monster units; weaknesses: 2 flamethrowers in overwatch and you are f****d and if you don't kill your target you lose 170 points (same points as a LR) on counterattack. I like them a lot but they are not cheap to run as damage dealers.
I dont understand how can u put 3 plasma gun + 2 melta + 2 hotshot and a grenade launcher in theses squads when u cant take the same special gun more than twice in the 10 mans squad ? U have to choose beetwin hotshots and meltas ?
Making so that you can use the strat on the Command Squad. It still doesn't bring back the command squad if you target the bodyguards, of course, but there might be something spicy in a Kurov's Aquila you can duplicate and bring back after being destroyed.
But doesn't "This Stratagem cannot be used to return destroyed Character units to attached units." mean that the character does not come back? Admittedly, we could bicker over whether the Tempestor is "attached" to the command squad or not, but RAI it's meant to prevent you from recycling officers.
@@lt.danhooper1635 You are not doing that, though. You are not returning any character to any attached unit. You are restoring a single, unattached unit like any other.
@@weissraben4476 As I said though. We can bicker over the loophole all day. The point I was trying to make is that it *is* a loophole, and therefore unintentional.
@@lt.danhooper1635 It's not a loophole. The limit is just not what you are saying it is at all. It's not a limit on CHARACTER units returning, it's a limit on CHARACTER units returning _when their bodyguard unit is returned as well._
I've 4 10 man squads of them, each one has a vox caster, hot shot and a special weapon. should i bin them vox caster and add 2 more special weapons to each squad?
metall?? ...mr Grognard reporting here that only the special, seareants and heavy weapons where metall. The actual storm troopers where in, for the time, glorious plastic.
What the hell tank is even that. That thing would sink into the ground so fast it'd become a fixed position pillbox/bunker almost immediately. Those tracks, haha. smh.
That six man box in ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VuPkEXgeQS4.html is plastic miniatures, I know I have some of those. Special weapons, Heavy weapons and sergeant miniatures where metal.
The Militarum Tempestus Command Squad does not have the keyword Voice of Command and is not able to give orders by itself. You can attach a comissar which can give orders. But strictly speaking, Scion Cmd cannot give orders on its own.
@rebar3820 it does not have the keyword. It can issue up to one order, but it does not have the rule allowing it to give orders in the first place. Other command squads do have voice of command. Scion CMD does not.
Scions have the keyword regiment. It can issue 1 order to a regiment unit. I fail to see your argument. It sounds like you are trying to rules lawyer this. But I will just play the other side as a "rules as intended". It's a typo to not have Voice of Command army rule on the data sheet when they clearly say the unit can issue 1 order.
@Facelessfool that seems to be one hell of an oversight. Have they FAQed that at all? Because by that thought process, it has an order to give but can't give it.
