Abandoned buildings and trains at Jefferson Proving Grounds. 3rd largest military base in the world! Exploring the maze of railroad sidings full of railroad cars and exploring the abandoned buildings and ammunition storage bunkers built under ground. Madison Railroad uses the railroad spurs and sidings to store hundreds of railroad cars that are not needed. There are also a couple of old abandoned locomotives. Jefferson Proving Ground is just north of Madison Indiana and has 56,000 acres. Established in 1941 and used by the military to test ammunition and explosives, the base closed in 1995. Part of it is still used by the military and the rest is park land and privately owned. People actually live in some of these buildings. The explosives have created an environmental hazard and there are areas of unexploded bombs. The US Army gave property owners 30 - 90 days to evacuate their property when they first constructed this base. Today there are a few private businesses here and the short line railroad Madison Railroad has an office and building where they are currently working on 2 locomotives. They have a caboose, a restored passenger car, other diesel locomotives and they store hundreds and hundreds of railroad cars for their owners. This video shows all of that and an 8 track public railroad crossing. I was also here when Madison Railroad had to retrieve 2 stored tank cars for their owner and I filmed them taking the cars to the CSX interchange at North Vernon, Indiana. I posted one video of that with a longer one that will be posted soon. I talked to the railroad officials at their office on the base and was told that they are working on the 2 locomotives in the building and they are currently installing new railroad ties and cutting back trees along the maze of tracks. They also told me that some of the equipment that they use on their annual Christmas trains are stored here. Trains only run here as needed with MWF being the most common days of operation. Listen in on 160.605 channel 33. Thanks for watching! Filmed January 21, 2021. This is filmed in 4K so make sure that you have it set for 4K in the settings below the video.

The bunkers would have been Explosives Store Houses (ESH) and like most storage of its type built in the 40s-60s they would have been able to load directly into or out of the railcars. They would have been hand carried or small trolleys, anything later would have had bigger doors to allow them to use pallets and forklift trucks. Remember we used to have lots of service personnel to hand carry stuff. The earth covering is about 3ft deep at its shallowest and the grass would have been manicured like a tennis court when they were in use - we also had a lot of service personnel to sweep up and keep stuff tidy! I suspect the traffic signals near the guard hut would have been to hold convoys into the explosive storage area, as there is a limit to how many persons are allowed in the area at one time, particularly if using experimental weapons. A full regiment of artillery would have been too many men to expose to the depot in one go, and when in full swing doing trials and some training as well, I suspect it was a busy place. As there is little accommodation remaining even as ruins or floor slabs They probably had to use tents for visiting troops. As the area had a long life and a few masters, (Army, later Navy and lastly DoD) there would have been many different rules and regimes at different times... a fascinating place. I suspect building 510 may have been a searching/inspecting facility where they might expect to have found or looked at munitions (probably fuzes and similar small components) or may be fitted fuzes, or later tested small amounts of chemical - you had a few strongly separated compartments where the heating was mounted high up out of the way and all the electrical fittings were protected. The shower would be in case of an accident or spill. Strange thing about it was the lack of protection or earth banking, which makes me think it was for receipt inspection of small amounts. The majority of tank cars you looked at appear to be owned by their builders - American Car & Foundry, so will be from their lease fleet. They'll come back into use soon when new Pres Biden closes all those pipelines! The use of military installations for storing rolling stock is common all over the world. I've seen in in UK, Germany, France, Holland, Canada US and seen it reported in Australia. They are relatively secure and usually a fair distance from anywhere... up until recently, people respected the need to keep out. That Plymouth was minute compared with even the GE Davenport 44 tonner next to it. Imagine putting it next to a SD70 or GE4400!!!

The Navy still has two naval magazines, one at West Loch near Pearl Harbor and another Lualualei magazine in the hillside about 12-15 miles away with Barbers Point NAS in between, the Navy had their own Whitcomb, Plymouth, and GE center cabs to transfer artillery between the the magazines, Pearl Harbor and Barbers Point, a railroad historical foundation aquired the Navy locomotives around the 70's and 80's , the army at Schofield Barracks had their own magazines deep in the valleys and they had their own as well.

@@jasonbabila6006 They have one even bigger. Look up NWSC Crane Division / Naval Support Activity Crane sometime. It has/had over 200 miles of track on the base when I was there. They also host Crane Army Ammunition Activity. They test 5" rounds and store all sorts of things in the bunkers there. Most people will never see the inside of that base. And cameras are forbidden for most people to have on base, so no pictures. They had a lot larger number of loco and far larger ones than on Hawaii. If you do a Google map view, every one of the bunkers has a track or road serving it. They even have their own fire fighting train.
@jasonbabila6006
@jasonbabila6006 3 года назад
@@gravelydon7072 The NSWC Crane Division complex is huge, I didn't know anything about it until you mentioned it, I forgot to mention the navy also had another magazine complex in the Kipapa gulch with numerous bunkers bored deep into basalt on the west side of the Kipapa stream look for the navy access road, so the navy had three complexes spread apart from each other.

Wow Jaw Tooth, that's really awesome to see an eight track crossing with tracks from 1925. Very interesting! Them storage cars on a military base is definitely a place worth visiting. I love them old coal cars, my favorite type of train cars indeed! Nice capture of old buildings with old switcher locomotive and caboose. This is really unique Jaw Tooth! I also loved the old MADISON passenger car and the old MADISON EMD to. I've always thought them old bunkers looked like fun to go in. I would definitely love to see this place in Indiana. That was a really an old diesel locomotive Jaw Tooth. You really did a great job on this one showing us those controls and gauges. I sure do wish that little Plymouth locomotive was running again, cause I know it would be fun to ride in! You really made this video extraordinary going into that bunker Jaw Tooth! I liked that old flatbed car to. Very Awesome and Impressive video. Best one yet, in my opinion!

Perhaps, but then let's travel back to the late 60's. The Air Force base at Bastrop, Texas was decommissioned and turned into the Gary Job Center. Inner city 'kids' from all over the nation were transported there at government expense, housed at government expense, and trained at government expense. All the government did was bring crime on a major level to the Gary Job Center.

Most organized locations also keep a chart or diagram. This place is lucky to have full unit trains but they keep SHPX cars on one track Z GATX Om another etc. Also the benefit of run around tracks. O know of a shortline where they just stash them as they come in and on s 5 mile stub branch. Heck back in the 1970s C&NW used an old main line in western WI to store cars for rebuilding and what a sight to see 4. Geeps grab 150 car cuts just to fish out 2 cars. Also at MILW shops where 2 F7s would grab 1 car in a cut of 50 or so in those last desperate days.

If you ever have seen East Terminal Railroad video's they are looking for industrial switch engines and those may fit the need as they don't mind buying cheap equipment and working to fix them up.
