@@winstonleeman8739 yes the bag u will hand over to a uncaring person that will pack it for transportation I bet he will care and as we all know in army u don't do much of anything else than stand straight up. Keep fun at that support job of urs, u arse.
In bootcamp they made sure to remind us that the reason it tastes like dip spit, is because theyre recycled/handed down, and during OIF/OEF, they all used them for dip spit on post. So thats where the flavor comes from.
My last day of basic training they made us clean out our canteens with water, dish soap and bleach. I shook the shit out of mine, turned it upside down… and a bandaid came out 😭
@@MIC2077no it’s what we used in basic because we re-use them, the one I was given, was from the early 90’s and yes no matter what you do to that canteen it’ll always taste off. We even used the drink mixer we get in our MRE’s but if you don’t clean it out it gets moldy and have to explain to a drill sergeant how mold got into your canteen. (That last part doesn’t usually go to well 😅)
@MIC2077 bleach or iodine (which acts like a weaker bleach) tablets are commonly used to disinfect water in a wilderness/survival situations You want to dilute it enough where it won't harm you but not too much that it's ineffective
"So how we are going to motivate our troops, any ideas?" "Hey, hey, i got one. Lets give troops water canteen that chances water to taste like sewer water so they just get back to home faster so they complete their missions faster" ".... Thats genius"
Brethren, Add 3 tablespoons of baking soda and fill with cold tap water. Soak overnight. Dump and rinse. If you don't mind the taste of lemon, add the zest of 2 lemons fill with lukewarm water leaving about about an inch of air past the base of the neck. Shake well and soak overnight. The oil in the lemon zest will coat the inside surface and counteract the usual plastic funky taste. Repeat the process as needed (about every couple of months. Also, when not in the field store your canteen with the cap off so the inside can dry out. Sometimes that swamp-ass taste is mold
@@huntercollins6463 The only way I ever found to get that musty ass taste out of them was those mint flavored 😂 denture cleaning tablets Polident 24hr they work fucking magic still clean water bottles an metal canteens fill them up drop tablet to soak over night strip fucking paint if you let it. Just Rinse really well after soaking or you'll taste bleach lol
Dude, you fill it with half water half mint mouthwash, cap it shake it up 2 mins. , let sit for 5 mins. or 30 ,mins., then drain out, (the mouth wash disinfects the inside.) then let dry all day. Then, you can enjoy fresh minty water. Learned that at B.C.T.
I found that putting a shit tone of pre workout or water flavoring and letting it soak overnight worked. I think it would leach into the plastic and help mask the weight tase.
Boiling hot water + Listerine once a week does the trick. Learned that trick at OCS and used it for all my canteens throughout my term of service. Minty fresh water even from a water buffalo m
@@claudemiles9543Mine from the Swiss army didn't taste that bad. Leaving water in it for over a day isn't a good idea though. Pouring boiling water in it helped indeed, I had to do it several times to leech out the smelly stuff.
The really fun part is when you use one for an iron and you put the sinks on “lava from hell” hot and then let the water cool in your canteen as you go about your day. Really brings the swamp flavor out.
I had one of those as a kid. Got it from a place that sells military surplus. Can confirm that the water always tastes terrible out of it. It also has a tendency to leak no matter how you close it.
I used about a cap of bleach and filled it with warm water. Then put the cap on and shake. Empty it out and rinse out with more warm water about 4-5 times. Let it fully dry. Do this every time you use it and it should clean it out. Later, I got an aluminum canteen to replace the plastic ones. Now I mostly use Stainless steel sports bottles.
@@robertnichols78it does, I enjoy one 4-5 times a week. My grocery store has them, every Panda Express I have been to has them, and I believe Starbucks does as well.
I had to laugh soon as as you said no matter how many times! I didn't have to hear the rest. And I've been out almost 38 years, something's never change lol
This is no joke. When I was issued my canteens from CIF they were so nasty that I refused to use them and instead went and bought 2 new canteens to use. When I returned the originally issued canteens to CIF, they refused to take them because "they were nasty as shit".
I still have mine. 5 years ago i had to get ready for a hike and I filled it Crown. I didn’t know it but that was my last hike in the military…. It was also the most fun lol. One of these days if I feel really sad I might swig the last bit of Crown….. but just thinking of that makes me gag a little.
Seriously need to make them out of aluminum like the old ones. I knows its probably cheaper but this is the US military with a annual budget of what $ 800 billion nkw
Also, I have one in my meager collection, which is aluminum, dated 1910. It has a metal cap and chain, of course, but these were also used in World War II until supply stocks were used up. By that time, the stainless steel canteens were in production.
This sounds like an advice a veteran soldier would give you :D I'm not in the army, but my buddy told me one of his seniors told him if he has trouble staying awake on guard duty he should break a toe and the pain will keep him awake. Like a legit, serious advice :D
You do understand that every soldier needs one (1,388,100 men and woman) so it’s quantity over quality, plus if you have so many troops you spend a lot of money on the vehicles, weaponry, gear, and supplies on every soldier, so we could spend/use up our entire economy on our military branches, and the USA can’t print more money because if we have so much money we’ll have to make all that money worth less than beforehand Example: so if you have 100 dollars that would be Equivalent to one dollar. So that means that every store and market will raise their prices for more money. Example: Let’s say you go to a local shop and you pay twenty U.S. dollars, so every dollar that makes up that twenty is multiplied by 100, so 20x100=2,000 (so 2,000 would be 20)
They used to issue metal ones. They had cork in the cap for the seal, and if you cleaned it tasted good. But military grade means cheapest bidder today.
Real talk tho, I got one of these bad boy with different cap and different color but they are closing tight for sure. These water canteen can keep your drink cold or hot, I got it from doing scout movement and it never leave me alone, remain on my bedroom no matter what.
Neat trick I learned, I am 15 and bought one of these from army surplus before they closed, if you make your own alcohol you can make very high proof stuff and clean it with that, worked like a charm
During my entire career, I kept the CIF issued canteens in my duffle with all of the other issued gear I never used. I bought brand new canteens from the clothing sales, and never had a problem with drinking from them. In between use, I rinsed them out really well and dried them on the dish rack. It’s called taking care of yourself and your equipment. Not too hard if you give a f and are not lazy.
Man I think I still have mine, not sure but man does that bring back memories. The water from the fountain and the water from the canteen both reeked and tasted awful so I got used to it till they messed up and left us alone. Thank you galley at shore
In boot camp on really early cold mornings heading to the range at pendleton for rifle qual we would fill our 2 canteens with scalding hot water before we went out just to stay warm on the fireing line. Also hot or cold or dirt tasting ya still drank it if you were thirsty enough you will drink it from that canteen and we did and if you didnt hydrate and finish your canteens by the end of the day you might find your self smoked on the quarter deck.
My issue canteen has two holes in it. One half way down and one at the top. Always got a beasting at PT for not filling my canteen up full. Luckily if I put my finger over the top hole, it would stop water leak king out the bottom one. Just long enough to pass the inspection at the beginning of PT
i work at seattle light house for the blind. we make those and the E-tool, and we just got into production of litter kits. we do tours so come down and check it out. and if your wondering i work in the aerospace qa dept, just put in my retirement paperwork gave them until end of july it will be 12 years to the day!
Salt and vinegar or isopropyl and salt. Make sure its coarse, shake and stir like crazy. Rinse it out good, then clean with bleach. Rinse out a few times and it will be good. Also remove moisture if possible.
You can use plain yellow mustard, Dawn dish soap & hot water to remove the smells/taste from the canteens. It'll work on your plastic Tupperware at home, too.
Jokes aside, the canteen is overengineered as shit because of its importance. It's optimized to carry as much as possible while being as easy to carry as possible, as durable as possible, easy to refill in a hurry, maintain a watertight seal, and maintain a maximum level of insulation. Some of the fancy new ones in the US ISAM also have life straws, so you can actually scoop up a canteen of swamp water and drink it safely.
The ones with the caps you can use with a gas mask can be used to smoke through the gas mask. If you take the cap off and plug it in the little hose and then place a cigaret on the intake part of the cap and suck the straw it will go through with no effort, just breath out and purge the mask if needed
My buddy brought back like 5 of these when he can back from the army, and yea it does taste like ass. I commend that guy for doing his 4 years and not complaining
I hated bagged water. Camel back canteens are shit and always hot from the sun. I carried 1 canteen on my left rear. Just within reach and used it as a head gear hanger. Carrying enough water was important in places i was but being able to take quick drinks that weren't 125*f was nice. We always had huge amounts of bottled water for bribing but thats extremely hard to manage in a kit. Maybe im dumb but i loved my canteen.
