A sparring bout between Amir, of Schola Gladiatoria in green, & Nick Thomas, of Academy of Historical Fencing in red. This was bought at the AHF run swordfight.uk sparring events held quarterly in Chepstow. Both clubs work from British Military Sabre sources, though AHF from Georgian era, and Schola Gladiatoria from Victorian era.
This is a particularly interesting bout as it is the first time these fencers have fought one another.

I've always liked Nick's foot work as he reminds me of my teacher instructor for martial arts and boxing which to feign move quickly to defend attack nimbly one must stay partially on their balls of their feet and shifting/switching weight 60-40% balance from front to back foot placed at 45 degrees. Amirs's stance too often was spread out wide forward and flat footed. Footwear makes a difference and running track shoes aren't very mobile for competition fights, wrestling boxing shoes are best imho. Had to watch this one because SCHOLA GLADIATORIA guy as I used to SUB that channel & bought a shirt from him, encouraged to him to set up merch for fund his school.

This was superb! I love watching Nick fence against instructors from other schools. AHF fencers all fence differently, but you can tell that they are all built off of Nick's style. Other instructors have a completely different technique and it's fascinating to watch. For example, Amir has very dynamic footwork compared to Nick's very measured tempo. Amir aggressively tries to force an opening while Nick waits and exploits openings. Amir uses his wrist to maximize his angles of attack while Nick uses his blade more as an extension of his arm, resulting in generally more linear movements. Not saying one style is better than the other, since fencers develop their techniques based on their physicality and their personality - just wanted to point out how fascinating it is to see two styles.

Amazing bout. Great atmosphere in Chepstow, I can see numbers increase and increase. Excellent sabre sparring, I really enjoyed how Nick's spadrooning pays off improving the thrust and footwork. Amir should have started the bout with the left hand a la Princess Bride :)

Marathon bout here. Nice bout. I'd say Nick landed more head shots and a lot more thrusts to the body throughout the bout. It looks like he attempted more times to come close and grab the hilt as well. What's the name for this in English? Coming to Grips? Where I'm at , it's called "movimiento de conclusion"

Looks like it would translate into something like "finishing/concluding movement" Probably has a more official name though :^)

Nice bout. Don't know if rolling your foot to get a few extra inches on the lunge is a good habit, but I guess it works for Amir.

What sources does the guy in green work from? I thought it would have been John Musgrave Waite given the school he is from but this looked different.

I believe he does practice Waite but also comes from a George Silver and singlestick background before his SG days.

Hi guys :) I really love your videos. I really want to get into HEMA sabre fencing, but I don't have any schools around me. I do however have a few sport fencing clubs around me. Do you think if I take classes in sport sabre fencing that a few of the skills will carry over to HEMA fencing if I eventually find a school to study it?

I've only done two hours of historical saber, and I have no formal training in sport saber, so take what I say with a grain of salt. In my experience yes, but with some problems. The bladework and footwork in modern saber is identical to that in historical saber, attacks, defenses, advancing, etc. The weight of historically weighted blades took some getting used to, but I managed to get to a decent speed within two hours, so it's not really an issue. The problems lay in how ingrained the modern rule set is in my head. In modern saber, if an enemy attacks you while you're advancing, it's essentially a free pass to double due to right of way rules giving you the point. This obviously is not applicable in HEMA, where a double scores no points. When my instructor performed a (very slow) counterattack, it took me way too long to process that I was supposed to parry and riposte rather than freeze and wonder what was going on. Edit: Enroll in whatever weapon program seems best. Bladework is easy to learn, distance, footwork, and timing is more important overall.
