As I think I've commented on previous videos in this series: this is great, having read Rowarth but not having trained with anyone using his work, it's really helpful for my understanding to see someone demonstrating it.

Third video in a series with over 4K views and 120+ likes and no dislikes is fantastic. Love seeing interest in hema and classical fencing grow, makes me happy :).

I've seen the withdrawn leg in conjunction with a parry in other manuals before. One or another I can't recall even advocated this on each parry, I'm assuming to make safe against feints that end with a cut to the lead leg. What I've been curious though is how those hold up to actual opponents - once you have your legs back together like that, you're vulnerable to getting rushed and knocked over, no? Especially against less calculating opponents that like to get in close.

+Michael Eversberg II Yes that is indeed the reason, and in Rowarth he is fond of doing it often. As for how it works in reality against a range of opponents. It typically assume the opponent is lunging at you, in which case they extend and lower their body to get reach, which in turn you must accept a certain chance of them attacking the leg. The next thing is that the hanging guards used as parries are some of the strongest defences against those who rush. If you engage in an outside hanging or St George as they rush at you, they will almost never be able to parry the very fast and powerful cut one that follows. Lastly, I have never seen an occasion where someone has been able to rush during that moment and hit the opponent whilst the feet are together, because you do not stay in it. You merely bring that foot back for the parry, and then immediately go forward with it for a counter or recovery is they withdraw, or back with the other foot to recover backwards. If you watch this fight you will see the back foot withdraw many times and how it is used as far as timing and stance goes. Essentially, it is used anytime there is a perceived risk or chance of risk to low target zones, or a very strong parry was needed at the height of the head and the legs could not be covered quickly afterwards. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4udBj0NkMcs.html

I once saw someone on a demo video halfswording their sabre to protect their head from a high blow, is that a common guard for sabres?

+ArkBlanc Not in any British system that we teach from. You will however see halfswording techniques with langes messers, which have plenty in common with sabre at times. Though the halfswording there usually isn't for defence, but offence, as it allows you to apply far more leverage against the opponents blade.

Is it good practice to go from the point of transition from 2 to 3, but instead of number 3 cut move upward to a hanging guard along the same path as a 3 cut?

As a defence yes it is common, not as a cut though.

Academy of Historical Fencing, I'm on day 1 of your videos. Saber fencing is pretty straight up, like it alot. I'm new to it and I am ready to get me a sword.😀

I wonder what's next after the sabre guards! :)

+Neo Henry We are still working through the core basics for the sabre lessons. I think the next will be a six cut parry drill to combine with the six cut cutting drill as a partnered practice. Though we do need to have a basic footwork drill soon too.

Out of interest, have you ever sparred with Matt Easton?

+Timmy Turner I haven't (Michael Thomas), I don't know about Nick. Don't think so.

+Timmy Turner Oddly no. I have known him for something like eight years, met at loads of events. But we have somehow never been at sparring areas at the same time. Closest we came was when we were due to fight one another in a tournament, but an injury in the fight before (not involving either of us) ours caused the tournament to be cancelled. So its just never happened.
