Graham is a genius, and his characters are brilliantly portrayed, the song about the foot pump is so silly and hilarious, iv watched it over and over and I laugh as much each time. Brilliant 😊❤
'Suburbia awakes' sums up Britain on a summer afternoon... I reminds me of my childhood. Laid on my bed in the school holidays, listening to the street outside....
I had no idea this existed!!! Excellent!! This guy's observations are so clever. It is a shame he is so obscure. I suppose the humour is a little too subtle for most.
This should have been invested in to have been on the telly. I love his work, his vision, his warm comedy. I also appreciate the whole home made style and study on seemingly insignificant things. Its comforting! They missed out big time with John Shuttleworth and probably misunderstood an entire audience. That North South divide or just short sightedness?
John reminds me of my Father, he was born in Berwick Upon Tweed, north part of England on the border of Scotland, my mothers name was Mary; when ever john calls out to Mary it is exactly house my father sounded (takes me back to the 60s) when ever my father and mother would disagree, my father would say to her 'Mary!! go comb your hair!!' How Graham created this character of John is supernatural.
I wish it could be on T.V. but they put too much swearing and ads about life insurance, virus, cheating, if you can't pay well take it away, murder, theft. Hospitals piles , leaky bladder. Underwear, it would be a real treat to have a bit of Happyness ,for a change!.
I think it works better when you cant see Ken or Mary. Its still interesting to see what Ken is supposed to look like though. Its a bit weird seeing him in the flesh after just imagining him for all these years.
What a find! After all these years, I wasn't even aware there was a tv pilot. When I think of the rubbish that got the green light - how was this not commissioned? It is truly freaky after all these years to see Ken in the flesh. He's not a million miles from what I imagined, but I still prefer the version of him I have in my minds' eye. Ken - you're a star, and I've always thought you should have your own radio show.
'Hot Afternoon in Early June' one of my all time fave Shuttleworth songs, just so delightful and so observant but fits better in the 'Midsummer Madras' episode that was on the radio.
Amazing find - thanks for uploading! I had no idea there'd been a pilot. I've always thought of the Shuttleworths as a sitcom and thought it would work, though it's so subtle and so much about everyday banalities I couldn't imagine it working in the mainstream. Interesting to see Ken - he's pretty close to what I imagined, though I've always had him in my head as Bill Oddie with an Afro - and less obviously weasely. The interiors and surroundings are exactly right. (Mary I've always had down as a beady-eyed battle-axe a la Timothy Lumsden's mum in 'Sorry'). Awesome find.
Graham does a great job actually dressed up as Ken as well as the voice. I pictured his afro being bigger. But as for Mary!!....I don't think it's ever been mentioned on his radio show but I did imagine her as having short brown hair in that style. If anything the actress is just a bit too young and pretty. A little older and with more of a glum face and she'd be spot on. Have to say these things are best to the imagination. On RU-vid there's a couple of things I never knew Graham Fellows tried out for the character like this and the talent show thing. But the way he creates it for radio....The Shuttleworth family, Radio Shuttleworth, Lounge Music, Open Mind....and his live show where it's just him on stage....it's all better than telly. Oddly enough the sitcom would've restricted the possibilities which have no limits on radio!!
Does John know that his wife moonlights as Holy Mary, a bar maid in the famous Manchester club The Phoenix where you can enjoy 'sunshine indoors' Ooooopppphhh!
Graham i love the heavenly serene intro music you created for John Shuttleworth and love the atmosphere you created around the character warm, kind , uncomplicated, funny, and very lovable, I try endlessly to recreate some the lovely keyboard music that you play i bought a Yamaha PSS-680 , but i cant seem to find the other organ you have a Yamaha PSS-51 what's the difference between them ??. never give up John Shuttleworth he just puts me a such a happy place, and if you can please put more f his stories on film if you can. Thank you so much Graham
Disappointed they didn't use the same house from 500 bus stops. Can't imagine John living here. Ken is slimmer than I imagined, looks like a diddy man. Mary is spot on. Great stuff and good to see but I'll go back to the radio shows and my imagination.
I never imagined Ken Worthington looking like that - with that thin papery voice, I "saw" him in my mind as this little grey wizened fellow of about 75...
I can't help but think that this would have worked better if Graham had played all the characters...Mary and all, maybe even Treacle. Ooof..still a very respectable television presentation.
Nice, but this is not at all how Ken looks in my head. I will pretend this man looks and sounds like Ken, he is also named Ken, but he isn't our Ken. The real Ken looks like an everyday, dull older British man.
