One thing I’ve noticed is that the Polish lyrics, when translated into English, are substantially darker than the original song, and depict Loretta/Lottie as more of a religious zealot convinced she’s doing God’s work instead of just another serial killer who murders people for the hell of it. This also factors into the tone shift halfway through the song, once it’s revealed that Loretta was the killer all along. In the original version, Lottie sounds crazed and maniacal, bragging about how she killed them all and she’d do it again if she could. In the Polish translation, however, Lottie becomes angry and indignant, basically telling the people convicting her “How dare you punish me, I’m the only one who knows what’s right!” Edit: Another thing I wanted to add for context: in this version, their equivalent of the original lyrics “All God’s creatures, they all gotta die” actually roughly translates into “You do not know the day or hour, only God knows it.” However, at the very very end of the song, the last time she sings it, it changes to “You do not know the day or hour…only *I* know it,” further revealing that Lottie’s savior complex may even be a full-on God complex.
My thoughts exactly. I found this version first and felt let down by the original afterward. I like dark songs and while the original ballad is great to just listen to, it doesn't feel like a testimony of a complete murderous maniac, whose madness is slowly uncovered by every verse of Polish version, which I think works much better. And I really prefer this one over the original.
coming from english alone, i didn't notice any difference in the lyrics. but the mood is much darker and fits the song well. (there might be some subtle differences in the lyrics, but i didn't notice them.)
@@brucemacnaughton3602 it’s almost an entirely different song; same overall concept, different themes. if you look up a direct translation, you’ll see.
W oryginale melodia miala byc wesola i skoczna, a tekst przerazajacy i ciemny.
Literal Translation: Millhaven is a small town, small and colorless, The neighbors offer you a cold respect. There are however, concerning days when the fore-evening golden sun warms hearts with a tender kiss. I warn thee before danger, citing the bible with devotion Tra la la tra la la la… You know not the day nor hour, only God knows that! I was christened as “Loretta”, but I prefer the name “Lotta”. I’m fifteen, though they give me more, I have green eyes that aren’t too shabby, and light hair that’s let down, the boys already turn their heads after me. But I am humble and shy, mother raised me piously, Tra la la tra la la la… You know not the day nor hour, only God knows that! You must’ve heard that there hangs a curse over Millhaven, here in the area, everybody knows of it. Blake’s son- Billy has gone missing somewhere. A week passed before they found him. He’d drowned. His relatives fell into despair. There were cries and complaints to Mary, for the boy had a rock at his neck. Tra la la Tra la la la… You know not the day nor hour, only God knows that! Father O’Rye had gone mad when he saw his dog, nailed to the doors of the auditorium. The city was once again riddled with sensation, for the old clergyman wanted to perform the remains’ cremation in the school laboratory. When they were taking him away in the jacket, pouring tears, he preached a sermon Tra la la Tra la la la… You know not the day nor hour only God knows that! Millhaven was in shock, people were afraid to leave their homes. New hypothesis were thought up constantly. Everything quieted down- good God- Quieted down as if cut by a knife (a cleverly used Polish idiom) When someone found the mayor’s cut head. It had been splashing about in the town fountain, but the body was never found Tra la la Tra la la la… You know not the day nor hour, only God knows that! Next old Lady Colgate, had given up her ghost (idiom meaning to breath one’s last breath) But the fuzz arrived rather quickly, and before she joined with God, with her last breath she howled out, “Loretta killed me by her own hand!” I was just combing the blood out of my hair, when a bunch of rangers rushed in Tra la la Tra la la la… You know not the day nor hour, only God knows that! I was named the Devil’s Spawn, and the curse of the town! When it was Millhaven that brought misfortune unto me. I have green eyes that aren’t too shabby, and light hair that is let down, and pretty lips when I smile. Fall to your knees, everyone! I know the simplest way to the Lord! Tra la la Tra la la la… You know not the day nor hour, only God knows that! This investigation is depressing and unfair. How dare you punish me in the name of the law! Not for me the earthly passions, I’ve crossed the threshold of eternity, I know best that death is not a game! A mourning bell rings over the world, so may His divine hand protect you (also frequently used saying) Tra la la Tra la la la… You know not the day nor hour, only God knows that! It was I who drowned Billy. Unfortunately, while stabbing Miss Colgate I hesitated for a moment, but when I was flaying the mayor, I was happy because I could see the sun’s reflection in the circular saw. The dog however I did not crucify, I always had an A in religion class, Tra la la Tra la la la… You know not the day nor hour, only God knows that! When I had confessed to everything before the jury, the press hailed me a vampire. I ran my fingers through my hair, and looked the judge in the eyes. As you know, I’m obviously not just any random freak! The psychiatrist resides in a convent, to your glory great God! Tra la la Tra la la la… You know not the day nor hour, only God knows that! Daily I am rather calm, the doctor helps me out. When I sometimes fall into depressive episodes, electroshock or hypnosis, a golden medicine for everything- Prozac, and I can once again weave euphoric plans. I dream of a quick recovery, when I get out, I’ll still yet show you Tra la la Tra la la la… You know not the day nor hour, only I know that.

The music itself is brilliant, the beginning being just a simple piano over a young girl singing. Then when that’s over, the song slowly starts to gets more and more sinister with some more added cords till near the end: where it all comes together to make a bombastic ending that even WITHOUT the singer’s voice, FEELS like it’s screaming at you. The singer herself is also incredible. She often BLEACHING her verses during near the end, selling the part of this being a insane woman yelling about how she is right and her crimes. She does a BEAUTIFUL job depicting Lottie in this from a young girl to a deranged serial killer killing for the God to a broken soul in a mental asylum
Something i noticed recently is that she sings "All of God's children, *they* all gotta die" not " *We* all gotta die", Lottie dear who's your dad exactly?
No i ta puenta...
It's a pity they decided to put original cave's song lyrics as a translation. This song's text is substantially different (and harsher) than you can read in English.
Taking into account that contrary to the Polish text my below quick English translation has no artistic values whatsoever and some linquistic errors :D it is something like that: Millhaven is a little, lackluster town Neighbours treat one another with cold respect However days here are disturbing when evening golden sun ignites hearts with tender kiss I warn you against danger, devoutly quoting the Bible Tralalala, tralalala! Później słabnie wokal, to wtedy substancja zaczyna działać.

I znów tu jestem... słucham i jestem zasłuchana... ten animowany krótkometrażowy film Bartka Kulasa i fenomenalny głos Katarzyny Groniec, sposób w jakie to zaśpiewała, powodują tyle emocji, drżenie, strach, odrazę, zaciekawienie i wiele innych... To co oglądamy, słuchamy powstało na kanwie psychodelicznej ballady "The Curse of Millhaven" Nicka Cave'a i szczerze mnie hipnotyzuje bardziej.... bardziej... bardziej...
To wszyscy wiedzą.

I ta animacja...
To wszystko spowodowało lawinę morderstw. To wszystko. Można dyskutować i przedstawić swoją wersję, i tak dalej, i tak dalej.
Kocham ten utworek :P GZ Pani Kasiu za mroczny klimat no i dla grafika który potrafił sie dostosować i wzmocnić przesłanie.
As a person who hears a Polish song for the first time, I think that this language is like a mixture of German and Russian) And I will also dream about it in my nightmares.
cry about it all you want, they do sound similar to not polish or german speakers and do have a heavy influence on each other as well as influences from both greek and latin.
@@siionach I don't know if it is possible to hear German in Polish because it is a Germanic language like English, Dutch, Swedish etc. these are quite two different things, but the people who hear German may not have heard German exactly, or the voice in the song is aggressive enough to sound like German. The Polish language is softer than other Slavic languages, it has accents that make you hear too many variations of "sh" and „ch”. looking at opinions from internet Polish sound just like soft Russian
It's like... What the... I don't even... This showed up in my feed as recommended. How RU-vid thought I'd like this... OK, it was pretty awesome. Quite creative and creepy.
+Gladorn The only 'downside' is that lyrics sung are vastly different then the subtitles. Subtitles are original Nick Cave's tekst, Polish lyrics are not the translation, they are loose interpretation. The animation makes much more sense with regards to the Polish text.
+Sanderus Interesting! I'd need to find a link to a better translation of the lyrics then so that I could compare the two! Thank you. (On an aside, I didn't think the animation was all that off from the subtitles but I will watch this again trying to see the difference.)

Nie. Jak dla mnie po prostu fajna piosenka. Nie wiem o co ludzie srają, że niby OJEZU JAKIE CHORE 18+ A NAJLEPIEJ PO EGZORCYSTĘ DZWONIĆ. ...Chore to są polskie gwiazdki z utworami typu "Diamond Bitch" by Doda albo "Mów Mi Dejv" by Srałem.
