This really a terrific series. Your methodology and attention to detail is top notch. I am absolutely hooked on these videos. On this video, what has given me a lot more insight, is the warranty process. Seeing what great measures you take prior to calling the MOCO, and pleading on behalf of the customer is astounding and I applaud you! Well done sir! Looking forward to next vid.

@@HarleyDavidsonWizard I have been told by many dealerships that if you use any other part on the engine/drive train besides a genuine Harley Davidson brand, it automatically voids the 2 year and Extended Service Plan warranty. Slip-ons shouldn't but definitely even a 3rd party header pipe will void the warranty. In all fairness, I have seen other videos where people change out certain parts in Hondas, BMWs, etc. All brands seem prone to have less than sufficient factory parts that everyone swears you must change out for a 3rd party part. Question I have then, what is the best parts combination to have a solid, reliable V twin engine? ARCH motorcycles uses an all S&S powerplant but it's a $90,000 motorcycle because it's custom built. Why wouldn't Harley use the same combo if it would prove to be so reliable? How stout is the Sportster Evo 5? It's been around for YEARS.

Praying... you are a smart mechanic. I won’t touch anything without praying for wisdom and Gods direction. I’ve seen this before, usually there is a loud screeching noise that takes place for just a second and then quits. The customer had to recognize this before and after as well I personally believe one of the most important parts of a performance engine build is the lifters. hands down, A good American made performance lifter makes a gigantic difference I think. Great teaching tool right here and good job. In regards to pumping up the lifters, a lot of the old-timers never would pump them up so that they could adjust all of them and not have to wait for bleed down??? I personally like woods alpha lifters.

My 2018 FLHTK gear set chewed itself up and I have been waiting on a new gear set since March and told I will be lucky to have my bike back by LATE June or early July because the H-D Power System plant in Wisconsin is shut down and they don’t know when they are going to open and ship (at least that is what my dealer is telling me). Hell of a video Brad. Question, on these M8 engines, do the lifters have a specific way they go back into the engine, or can you just put them back in whichever hole. I do notice there is a little hole on the side people use to fill them with oil. Thank you.
@HarleyDavidsonWizard
@HarleyDavidsonWizard 2 года назад
Thanks. All 4 lifters are the same and they dont need to be installed any specific way and any lifter can go in any lifter hole. The "hole" you speak of where people bleed the lifter is where the oil is pumped into the lifter during normal engine running. When I install the lifters I like to orientate this "bleed" towards the flywheels on all 4 lifters. But the lifters can also be installed with the "bleed" hole pointing away from the flywheels. The way the lifter bodys are machined makes the oil path exactly the same all around the lifter so whether the bleed holes orientation doesnt matter. I just like to keep all 4 lifter holes pointing the same direction. The factory assembles the engines with zero care to the direction of the lifter bleed hole.
@robertrodriguez2412
@robertrodriguez2412 Год назад
Brad I have a question on the new H-D stock "C" tappets. I have a 2007 96" A Twin Cam. The new "C" tappets have that hole oriented either to the rear or front of the engine. You can't face them inboard or outboard like the "B" tappets. So do the new "C" tappets go oriented away from each other. Like the rear two tappet holes face to the rear & the front two tappets to the front since the would put the lifter holes facing the oil passages in the lifter bores? Thanks

Great, informative series brad! I've heard of Harley having an unofficial recommendation to inspect or replace the lifters after 10k miles on the stage 4. Any truth to that? I just bought a 2018 road glide with 10,645 miles on it, should I worry? What are some things to look out for???
@HarleyDavidsonWizard
@HarleyDavidsonWizard 4 года назад
There used to be a "recommended mileage inspection" for a obsolete version of Screaming Eagle lifters. Around 6 or more years ago inside the Screaming Eagle catalog it recommended removal and inspection of the "screaming eagle" brand lifters every 7500 miles when used with hi-performance cams. I only saw this recommendation for 1 year and haven't seen any other recommendations since. That being said, a hi-performance setup does require more maintenance than a stock OEM setup. A normal OEM engine doesn't require any lifter inspection for maintenance and i've pulled them out at at 100k miles and they look great. Its where spring seat pressures and valve open pressure can be multiple times a OEM setup in a performance setup where it would be wise to disassemble and inspect regularly. But in my experience I wouldn't recommend Screaming Eagle lifters when other options are available. That being said, the current version Screaming Eagle lifter has "updated" components and I think has been around for only a year so time will tell how the hold up.

It says to soak the lifters in the service manual. When I talk to the warranty department I don't let my opinions get involved, I just state the damage I see and let the motor company come to there own conclusion. The only real goal is to make this situation the best it can be for the customer / make sure the customer has a good experience with the brand. I only shared my opinions of the possible root cause in this video.

Lifter failure in Harley motors is nothing new. It should be an embarrassment to Harley that after almost 20 years, their motors still have the same problem. Brad, you were probably too young to know this but Harley's Evo motors also had major catastrophic motor failures due to lifter failures. My '93 Ultra Classic had a rear lifter wheel come apart in 2003, with just under 50 k on the motor. There was lifter bearing parts in the rocker boxes, with a major knock in the motor. I was 2 blocks from my house going 25 mph, when it let loose. No warning or anything that would sound like a problem was about to happen. The Dealer I took it to tore it down and pronounced it dead. They could have rebuilt it and gave it a warranty, but that would only be good at their dealership. I opted to go with the factory re-man motor with a nationwide warranty, because I traveled by bike around the country back then. After all this time Harley still can't design,or find a supplier of lifter that won't fail and trash the motor. Pitiful.,,

My typical beef with SE lifters is them not pumping up and ticking. Maybe one day I will look more into the plunger end and compare them to other brands if I get a chance. For example, while installing adjustable pushrods and preloading the plunger in the lifer, on SE lifters the plunger feels notchy and crunchy where as when preloading S&S or Feuling plungers there super smooth so I believe there to be a manufacturing quality difference. I honestly don't install alot of SE lifters as my experience shows there failure prone and we don't sell the tipically.
