Thanks!! Doing this video brought up more questions I have on oil filters and brands. Maybe another video for the future.

That oil filter comparison was saweet Brad! I'm a tool geek too, so seeing that filter can opener was pretty damn cool too!

That was a pretty big chunk of debris you pulled out of the case! I was originally thinking a needle from the cam bearing but now I am not so sure...

I've sometimes used STP #S3614 oil filter (in a pinch) as a replacement for the stock H-D filter. I didn't notice any difference in performance.

From the first videos I have seen of the M8 stage 'upgrades' I was wondering if the engine was up to it. Considering that the M8 has similar construction as a twin cam and we already know how many things have to be changed when they get hopped-up, is it really a good idea to use stage kits - better by far to have the engine built by a notable builder. I think maybe H-D's kits are for 'bragging rights' rather than serious usage - look forward to seeing the crank runout at both the pinion and drive shaft ends.

It's like watching a great "who done it" movie..can't wait to see who the culprit is? Did I see a collapsed lifter roller? Can you tell what that big chunk of metal in the bottom of the cam chest came from?
@HarleyDavidsonWizard
@HarleyDavidsonWizard 4 года назад
👍 It was a huge hunk of the lifer roller.
@scotty2221

So, when you have all that metal shavings in there how in the world do you know where it's coming from? I know on new bikes and cars you will get a lot at first then it should lighten up over the years right?

This vehicle had like 100 trillion times more metal in the filter and oil than a normal engine. Based on the frequency of the sounds it was making I was assuming it was valve train based related damage. I've cut open a filter from a complete fresh engine build and it had no visible metal particles so I would consider that normal But a super small amount of bronze or aluminum I would look past but if is steel then there are super unusual problems. Thanks for the view and question!!

Did you notice the difference between the two oils in each filter?
@HarleyDavidsonWizard

I did. The HD filter definitely was far more "used" where as the WIX looked almost new. And I now wonder if that played some part in how the filter media felt. I would like to redo the filter tare down in the future and compare new and used filters of HD/WIX/ and K&N and anything else other people are using. I guess I would like to know if "the people" out there are interested in something like that.

@@HarleyDavidsonWizard I know this is old, not sure I’d you did a filter comparison? I have used H-D, along with K&N and AMSOIL filters. I try to shy away from cheap filters. As far as Oil I have used H-D synthetic, along with AMSOIL V Twin and would also consider MOBILE ONE for V Twin. I am sure I pay way too much for oil.

Just curious...what is the red handled, duck bill looking tool at 18:28?
@AnthonyV82
@AnthonyV82 4 года назад
Richard, I’ll second that question. Looks like it could be used to compress a portion of a valve spring, but it didn’t seem like it would have been necessary yet at that point of the vid to get rocker arms and pushrods out. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Its this awesome tool to grab the spark plug boot on the right side spark plugs. It makes it super easy to remove the spark plug wires on the right side without damaging them. It's a tool the motor company sends the dealerships for servicing M8s I'm sure there are aftermarket variants tho.

Harley Davidson Wizard great. I destroyed a right side rear cylinder plug wire cuz I couldn't get it off. Would love if you could do some more looking into manufacturer, part # or equivalent variants of it. I see some print on one of the handles but can't make it out clearly. A little help???? That shit pissed me off. Cost me $54 and still waiting 3 weeks later for them to come in. Glad I had a stock spare.

Anthony V I thought that or for the push rod cover. But I was wrong. If you ever need a good push rod cover removal tool check out Motion-Pro 08-0255. Compresses the clip like a dream and pops right out in a second. I just got one and it's sweet.
