In this video we review the cordless Milwaukee M12 Rotary Tool.
Rotary tools are one of the handiest little tools in the workshop, with so many options for bits and blades and this Milwaukee rotary tool is not only cordless, it uses the same batteries as my other 12 volt tools.
The Rotary tool was originally developed my Mr. A.J. Dremel and brought to the market in 1932. I could arguably be the tool with the most accessories. There are a plethora of cutting discs in different sizes and designed for cutting different types of materials, there are all sorts of different grinding wheels, cones and long narrow shaped stones, all sorts of little diamond, carbide and steel cutters and adjusters, not to mention all the sanding sleeves and all the rest of the accessories.

Very good advise in wearing eyes protection (and also ear) because those cross-cut disk are fragile.

Safety glasses aren't enough when grinding, you need goggles that fit to the face. I've had metal sparks go up and under safety specs before and had to go to hospital twice to have the spec and resulting rust-ring removed.

To many people are caught up on getting everything brushless. "MY BRUSH IS BIGGER THEN YOURS KINDA THING", In my opinion lol. I mean there nice but not necessarily worth the extra$$ all the time. Aspecially with this tool. Plus with brushed tools you have the ability to change out the main parts and get them back in action. This is a awsome tool thou! Nice video sir!

There's a few tools in the m12 lineup that need a fuel update for sure. Mostly the oscillating tool imo, it needs a quick change feature badly and brushless would be a welcome addition as well. This rotary tool doesn't need an update as badly imo as it isn't missing any major features, but yes, brushless is always better.

As good as the Dremel is the prospect of a proprietary battery that is specific for only one tool was a deal breaker I may venture into other M12 tools because I already have the batteries and charger. Tool only once you own the battery is very attractive

This was the most helpful review of this tool as there are many others. Thanks! I'm wondering if the gyp rock bit could be used to cut through thin wood almost like a portable router. It's probably not recommended, but it's not always convenient to use the round cutting blades when you're working in tight spaces.

Along with your thoughts on the power button , I would like to see a place to hold the wrench and maybe a reverse direction button. I did learn a few things from your video, I have this tool and like it made sense for me. To get the Milwaulkee it was only 40 buck more than the other cordless units I saw, I have an old Sears corded Dremel but I like the portability of cordless

Pile of dogshit tool! I'm on my 3rd. After maybe 1 hour of run time on my two previous tools, they just blink as if the tool is overloaded or overheated. Tried multiple batteries and same thing. Tons of reviews on HD & milwaukee's site confirming this fatal flaw as being super common. Just wait until yours fails and pray its in the warranty period. I'm now looking for an alternative to this M12 trash.

Thanks for the review Colin. I've just ordered a Milwaukee 12v drill/driver kit, and I'm quite interested in this rotary tool. I have cheapo, corded rotary tool right now but its cord annoys me. Two things about this tool do grate though. Like you, I find the position of the switch to be a poor design. Like you said, it needs to have a pulse switch operation, positioned up near the front, so you can wield the tool more like a pencil. Secondly, the requirement to use the spanner to change bits. This is really tedious, and it's easy to lose the spanner and it's fairly nasty and fiddly to use. Is there a place on the tool to clip the spanner? I'd much prefer a keyless chuck mechanism that didn't require such a crappy little spanner.

Hi Colin. Thanks for your excellent video again. Have you tried the round-over router bit for your rotary tool? I'm rather keen to use it for this purpose as palm routers are very expensive and this rotary tool might be perfect for the job. The question is has it got sufficient power? I found it surprisingly useful for things like grinding in small holes or curves, and sharpening saw blades and serrated kitchen knifes with the diamond-cutter wheel. I tried polishing with my corded rotary tool (140W) and burnt out the motor. I don't think the low-powered corded version is really capable of polishing because of this. I think your cordless tool will not suffer from this problem - hopefully
@knecht105
@knecht105 8 лет назад
+Jeff Harmed Hi Jeff, I have not used the roundover bit, I have been unable to find one in my area ... but I have a bit of a selection of them for my routers. I think if it was a small roundover bit I should be ok, and might be ideal for small things like jewlery boxes and the like. Yes, these are light duty tools, too much strain on the motor will burn it out ... thanks for your comment and bringing this topic forward. Always good to hear from you ..

Nice review! I have a quick question or two. Do you have any idea what the average run-time per battery is for this unit? Also when it runs down does it stop working all together or does performance fade off? Enjoying your channel! Thanks for sharing!
@knecht105
@knecht105 8 лет назад
+ale8oneboy Good questions, the run time will depend a bit on how much effort the tool needs to make, but basically, it's such a small tool it really is not going to encounter too much stress in cutting or sanding, except maybe when using something like a cut-off wheel. I can only guess that even under a moderate load you should get upwards of 20+ minutes. I do know that these kinds of batteries die quickly, unlike the old NiCads. They will give you full power for about 90 - 95% of the charge, then they will fade for a short while then just quit.

@w0mblemania
@w0mblemania 8 лет назад
+Brian Noah Indeed. And sorry for the sermon, but, young guys.... LISTEN UP: USE HEARING PROTECTION. I know, you're tough, but your ears don't care how tough you are. Like most industrial noise, the noise of a rotary tool WILL damage or destroy your stereocilia (hair cells inside the ear). These cells CANNOT grow back. Once they are gone, they are gone forever. You will lose your hearing. And if you get really unlucky you will develop Tinnitus, and then you'll know what hell on earth really is. Sorry for the preachy PSA, but everyone needs to learn from the mistakes and experiences of others. Which is why Colin made such a point of using safety glasses.

I got a cheaper one. Its so powerful, too powerful for cutting discs i find. I found cutting 1.2mm sheet metal or cutting out small sections of rust on my car, the discs would just snap so easily and fly around. The sanding/grinding attachments also would wear down in minutes. I think its more suitable to small jobs, not so much automotive. Where a mask as well as goggles, its quite dangerous tool with the speed and as shown, awkward (unsafe) way to turn off!

Fantastic tool but badly needs a FUEL version. The switch is good if you’re using a flex hose with it 👍

More than 96% Milwaukeee tools are made in China. Lots of bad tools always first are sold to USA because nobody inspects the outgoing, and because in USA Milwaukee Tool has the strongest warranty service ability than in other countries. During Milwaukee production process, more than 5% defects found out by workers, also more defects failed to be screened out a lot. Bad Tools include noise as gear,bearing aligned badly, sometimes press trigger no reactions at all, metal parts like shaft, gear, pinion, important screw broken as poor heat-treat, motor stator rubbing with rotator, fine wire laid inside tool broken as poor design, big percentage oil leakage for hydraulic tools, etc. 20% chance you will get a bad tool, bigger chance you will get bad tools for nailer, planer, hydraulic tools, cable/tube cutter, as they are first generation of tools for Milwaukee Tool, because comparing with sawzall, drill, Malwuakee Tool is suck at nailer, planer, hydraulic tools, cable/tube cutter,AC tools, drain cleaner, blower. Milwaukeee Tool workers only with less than 300 dollars monthly salary, even plus OT to 275 Hours a month, only 500 dollars a month,this salary very low for living in a big city in China, plus bad working environment(noise without issuing ear plugs to workers, very few goggles for workers, workers stand more than 10 hours every day), so Milwaukee Tool with huge employee turnover,500% yearly turnover,cause workers without enough experience,lack of training,then unable to ensure good quality. And worse turnover with most Milwaukee Tool’s suppliers. And after Milwaukeee tools launched one year, Milwaukee Tool will definitely do so-called VE, value engineering ,actually cost-down, change Germany trigger to HK trigger even Chinese trigger/switch, change Japanese chuck to Chinese chuck, etc. Milwaukee Tool has a team, 50 persons to do this VE. The quality would obviously become worse after the VE. The red plastic,Nylon,of Milwaukee tool handles/housings has been provided by a Chinese supplier since 2010, originally the Nylons were from DuPont, The Nylons changeovers caused the handles/housings weak,like screws very likely strapped/slipped in screw holes. Also black hard plastic for battery pack cases/covers, changed from GE ABS/PC to a ABS/PC from a Chinese supplier,caused battery pack case more likely broken, brittle, the same story is happening on Nylon material of battery frame, changing from Dupont to a Chinese supplier. This company is also an ugly company, in 2014, a Hong Kongese manager tried to rape a female employee during their business trip, the company fired him and less than half year, hired him again as a manager, then the female employee left this company and lost her job. Less than 1 year in 2015, in its factory dormitory a more serious rape case really took place by a male senior manager to a girl. Milwaukee Tool has really bad quality system, lose much profit because of failing to keep quality constant. And always look for cheap materials, cheap suppliers, worker salary is always at minimum salary, only 30 dollars higher than monthly minimum salary. Milwaukee Tool is new for making power tools comparing with Bosch,Dewalt, Makita. Milwaukee Tool only has grew fast from 2008 year. They copy and compare with Bosch, Dewalt tools during new product development stages.

I geather you don't like Milwaukee. They copy? Sawzall is like Xerox meaning they were the first of that product. At one time Milwaukee is the only game in town for professional tools, the other is the Craftsman Professional series that you could buy off the shelf. You won't find DeWalt, Makita and others which came much later. They have been around a long time before selling out to the Chinese. With that said, Milwaukee tools are good contractor grade tools relative to DeWalt Bash Makita and others which I also have. Factory conditions, no idea. Suspect it's like that across the board including Apple.

Dremel 8200 is much better.

"Much"? Milwaukee has the more powerful motor and longer battery life and simply a tougher tool. People are more used to Dremel, not as loud, more user friendly, + the accessories makes it a fan favorite.
