Ricky's jacket has a special significance for me. During the 1950s, my late Dad had a small men's store. He not only sold this style of jacket but wore a similar one as well. Many thanks for all of the fond memories.

The now defunct Orbachs was the official clothes store that dressed the show. It was located here in LA, CA that was affordable to the typical household.

Desi's jacket always brings a smile to my face. My paternal grandfather, who died in 1960, had a shirt made just like it with the contrasting yoke. That's one of the few things I remember about him. He was also smaller statured and built a lot like Desi Arnaz. Thanks so much for posting.

Ricky’s jacket! Such an iconic 1950s style. Similar jackets were a common casual jacket. Interesting speculation about where it ultimately ended up. I never noticed it on Bennett before you pointed it out but if I had, because I’m from that era, probably would have assumed it was another due to the popularity of the style (and the fact we can’t tell the color). Great job finding the color photo of it.

Nice coverage of Ricky's jacket! Have you ever covered Fred's pants? Years ago a cable station had a commercial for "the pants that ate Fred Mertz!" If you watch the series it's true! Fred's belt gets higher and higher all the time. I love that somebody notices these things besides me. 😊

Oh wow! Ricky's Jacket was actually a popular design back in the day. As a young kid, I remember men wearing that style. I suggest there may have been more than one in the studio. Very often there were 3 or 4 of any garment, so that if anything happened, no time would be lost looking for a duplicate, or worse, having something made. Time in expensive on set, and the cost of duplicate clothes is nothing compared to shutting down a shoot. I bet there were 3 for Desi, and 1 for his stand in... same for all other outfits. The stand-ins would have to wear identical clothing, for full effect as a substitute.

Ricky's Jacket! It's so funny to me that the jacket would catch your attention! I also noticed the jacket used more than once, just like I've noticed the same dress on Lucy in different episodes. I just figured re-using costumes was just like like us "in real life" people did with our own clothes - wear them more than once! Incidentally, I already own the complete set of I Love Lucy but if I win it this time, I'm going to donate it to my local library - they'll love it!

I agree Rick... I am 55 and have watched I Lv L since well forever.... Ricky's/Desi's wardrobe was always of interest to me... Even later in life I started wearing traditional Havana style shirts which was a staple of the "Sears" summer catalog back in the late 90's... I will suggest another cool one.. the checkered Ricky's Jacket during the "Country House" 1hr episodes. Ricky's Jacket A1.

My sister lives near Rochester, and on one of my visits to her home I drove across New York State and noticed signs for Jamestown. I was really curious as to what Lucy's hometown might look like but was not able to make the detour. It was years before I found this channel and knew that there were 2 different Lucy/Lucy and Ricky museums. I am kicking myself but will try to visit Jamestown on my next visit to my sister.

I always liked seeing Desi wear this jacket too. So 50's. Thanks, Rick, for finding the colorized photo of it. It was very different than what I thought. I thought that it would be brown with tan collar and cuffs in suede. I had never noticed the stipes before. This is a fun behind the scenes video. I wonder if Desi Jr or Lucie Arnaz would know the mysterious whereabouts of the jacket? Maybe it's in one of their closets?

Ricky's Jacket! It's amazing how a single item can pop up in so many episodes. I often thought about that with Hogan's jacket in "Hogan's Heroes", but it seems to make more sense because they are supposed to be incarcerated in a prison camp wearing only what they had when they were caught. I can see this topic being made into a series on your channel. Again, great stuff, Rick, and thanks for the nostalgia as I too grew up watching all of these shows.

I never thought much about Ricky’s jacket before , but I do remember it being a very distinct piece in a number of episodes. I wondered if the inset pieces were seersucker fabric; also, somehow, I guess I’d pictured it in blue, so I was surprised at your colorized photo showing it in black. Thanks for sharing the info!

You have great eyes, you're absolutely right. The jacket was two toned blue. Dark Navy Blue with lighter Powder Blue with Navy striped epaulettes. ( Remember in colorized works the color applied must be one shade darker than the grey scale of the item being colored thus it appears almost black) It and similarly styled jackets were called "Eisenhower" Jackets as the style was carried over from the Jackets worn by Army Generals. A pattern which Eisenhower liked and brought to popular attention in that he continued to wear the style into civilian live in the White House as President. They remained popular well into the 1960s. I had one in that pattern in my teens, all powder blue with ribbed epaulettes, and matching slacks. With a dress shirt and Navy tie it was as close as you could come to a dress uniform look. And back then the girls really "popped" for a guy in uniform so it was a fav on date night. Ricky’s Jacket is a great topic for a video. What I really like about this topic is that it points out that they wear some of the same clothes over and over as we all do in real life. The dress that Lucy is wearing in the first picture I’ve always loved and I’ve seen her in it in many episodes. You also point out how men used to dress. I have always been impressed that when Fred goes out, he’s always seen in a suit, tie and a hat. Very classic 50’s. A time of class for sure. Thanks for another great video. I had noticed that Ricky's jacket was worn more than once by Desi but didn't realize it was featured in that many episodes. Another article of clothing that I have noticed that Desi wore in several episodes is the necktie that had the single curving line of dots on it. Ricky's Jacket I always loved Desi's wardrobe; in particular his straw (boater) hats he used to perform, this jacket and of course his tuxedos. The jacket is the only period fashion item he wore that I can think of. I'm not surprised they reused costumes. What would also be interesting to research if Lucy's outfit were reused.

It’s so 50s stylish!!! Hey Rick… have you ever talked about the dishes used in I Love Lucy? They are all over eBay, I guess the pattern was very popular in the 50s. I’m not sure if the Mertz’s had the same dishes… which I don’t think so. In fact… when both Lucy and Ethel were going to each other’s place to borrow a cup of sugar in the Gossip episode, Lucy’s cup was obviously nicer than Ethel’s cheap plastic cup 😂

Hi! I got such a kick out of this episode! I have watch I Love Lucy since I was a young child and always loved that lady. Her comedy made her seem so real and someone we could relate to. It was a sad day around the world when Lucy died. She was one-in-a-million as both an actress and a human being! As for Ricky's jacket, an iconic style of the 50's and early 60's, I first noticed it when I was a child. My dad wore a similar jacket and I was intrigued because Ricky's jacket was just like my dad's!
