As a retired female psychiatrist, I confirm that I have never worn houndstooth, tweed, or elbow patches of any kind. But, I love that your character does.

Actually way more work is done through these skits! It's BECAUSE systemic changes take that long, that ppl need the catharsis of at least laughing and feeling with each other, over the things that can currently not be changed. So that they'd be OK enough to keep doing the countless tiny steps that DO lead to long-term progressive systemic change! We cannot underestimate the impact of emotional labor and emotional regeneration tools! Think about how much damage is prevented, even amongst medical professionals (and then also them and patients), just due to these skits raising the level of compassion and understanding. For how we sometimes fail to attend to each other, as we're running into systemic issues together. We're taught to put the blame on the person before us, rather than questioning how they ended up not being "the type of helpful" we had hoped for!!!! I'm not a medical professional. But I've been in and out of hostpital with 2.5 surgeries (1 planned, 1 trying and failing to fix an issue resulting from the 1st, 1 succesful ... we hope. I'm mid-recovery. Things look good so far!). I've ALWAYS been very empathetic, particularly with ppl in social fields. And we have a nice system here in Germany (regardless of it's problems). So I wasn't and wouldn't have been mad in regards to the surgery complication. However, because I saw your videos, what my mind DID end up go to, was asking the incoming 2nd surgeon, if my 1st surgeon is in trouble due to my surgery featuring a little accident. And he told me "not unless you want to purse..." and I went "NOOOOOOOO!! But if anyone from 'above' tries to criticise him, then I have to know, cause they'll go through me! My case will NOT be abused against my surgeon without my consent!!!!". He was relieved and also somewhat baffled that I'd be this concerned for my 1st surgeon. So much so, that he ended up blurting out to me, that actually, my 1st surgeon wasn't allowed to come to me n apologize. Cause admitting to mistakes as the doctor actually rendered their insurance null n void for the case?? Right, cause doctor's accidents are covered but not their mistakes, I suppose???. And he had a short rant of how awful that is, cause none of them wants to be that arse, who doesn't come see n apologise to their patient for issues. No matter if they could have done better or really couldn't have!! They are sorry for the prolonged suffering and want to stand by their patients!!! My 1st surgeon visited me daily whenever he was there and his schedule allowed it. First thing I told him, after that insightful chat, was, that I learned this thing and really appreciate, that he came to me the moment results had been out (Aka before 2nd surgeon came to me, to discuss the next steps). I told him I'm moved and shocked he took that risk and that I would have understood if he had stayed away. He was touched and said, that to him, his patients just matter more than these legal risks. And I hated that any of them even had to take "risks", to maintain their integrity as a caring person. He offered to assist in my 3rd surgery. He came in to tell me about it (aka probably also to figure out if I was comfortable with that. I was TRILLED and RELIEVED!! X'D). Half of the things I experienced in the past month month, both good n unpleasant, I would not have managed even remotely like this, without the knowledge I gained through your videos: About the internal workings of the medical fields and how they work together or sometimes against each other XD. The little detail about "drinking lots of water" and "kidney homeostasis" in the "First Day of Nephrology" short?? I literally thought of that and you, the moment I learned, that my right kidney had an issue!! Thank you so much!!

I love your podcast. As a fellow "married to medicine" spouse, your videos and this podcast have helped to validate and normalize some of the frustrations we've faced throughout this medical journey. My husband is currently an ID fellow at a large academic institution and one of the things he's facing (that you mentioned in your podcast) is the constant request for inane consults. Unfortunately, at his institution he is required to see every one of the patients he's paged for even if he can address the provider's question over the phone. For example, he has to do a full consult visit whenever the primary team calls to double check that it was ok to stop the antibiotics as per the plan, even though they had already followed the plan and stopped the antibiotics. Instead of responding that yes, that was correct, the ID physicians (and especially the fellows) have to do a full consult just to say that the original plan was correct. I'd love to see a sketch for any one of the consult services where the provider constantly gets paged for consults that just don't make sense but they have to go see them anyway. Thanks for building this community and helping to normalize and bring to light some of the things that physicians and their families think only affects them.

"What good is talking about the system problems doing?", you ask. It's giving us, the patients some hope and helping us feel seen. Letting us see beyond the professionalism we normally see in a doctor visit to see the human side. Knowing you all know it sucks is so important. You aren't out to get us trying to make our lives miserable with all the paperwork, you're doing the best you can to keep helping people despite all the paperwork.

As a nurse, I am cringing at the food tray story. Firstly, that no one was paying attention to the fact he couldn't reach his food. Secondly, WHAT HAPPENED AFTER? The resident walked away and happily ever after? Or did chaos ensue after the resident left the floor? 😂
