One hint I forgot to mention: Kelp has a max hight of 25, so if you would make longer elevators, you would have a block every 26 blocks to grow kelp on. Still way easier of course compared to bucket by bucket style.

Just brake the top block of the kelp or place a extra one on top, this restes the growth of it and it can grow again. Explanation: Whenever you create a new topblok of a kelpplant (by placeing or removing the block above) it gets a tag 'age' with a random integer up to 25 representing the hight it will grow to. This value assigement dose not take anything in to accont to set and growth only depends on the age tag -> kelp as high as you want, just renew the top block of it

Maybe the random integer cap being 25 is for placed kelp. I have kelp in my game starting at below y level 30 that go all the way to top of the ocean ( 62 )

I saw a great idea for a quick squid ink farm/ squid fountain : D - he made it when it was snapshot and soul sand bubbles worked in flowing water, so you have to grown kelp in your water like ^ this tip^ of yours. It isn't the most drops per anytime, but its fast low tech and I get a kick out of seeing the squids fly into the air. Maybe you could check it out? Give this young man some youtube love : ) btw, really enjoying your show this season. : ) I can hear your smile in your voice.

TL;DR: Put water on the top and fill the colunm with kelp; the kelp will make every single water block a source. After that, you can break the kelp.

I was curious about how this trick worked and this is one of the top videos that showed up in my Google search. I'm so glad that the author of this video segment took six minutes and thirteen seconds to explain this simple trick to me. I especially appreciated how he only took one minute to get to all of the examples of how to do it incorrectly. The tension of it all put me on the edge of my seat. I appreciate how the author of this video took the time to do all of this for me, and I do hope FUCK YOU GOOGLE WHY IS THIS AT THE TOP OF MY SEARCH RESULTS!?!

Is it possible to "build" a "free water column", without anything surrounding it (only air), in survival (vanilla) and without commands?
@MrMilkyCoco

Umm I think the bottom needs at least blocks but really you can do a top and bottom only covered way of doing a free water column.

Make a column with a hole in it and build it to your desired height. Fill it with water and kelp and do the soul sand trick. Then, and it’s very important to do this: Break the column from the bottom up.

When the elevator trick with the fence post was patched out, the tech community got upset. And had to deal with making more complicated systems. Now they add in something of comparable simplicity, if not actually more difficult because it requires the water sources, and the tech community complains that it's too simple and they like their more complicated mechanisms. Talk about a complete flip.
@Angi_Mathochist
@Angi_Mathochist 6 лет назад
People will always complain when the things they're used to get changed or don't work any more. Change is scary. But sometimes, change is great. Some people just need to learn that part.
@BigWheel.
@BigWheel. 3 года назад
Well, they aren't the same people complaining, the people who wanted simplicity probably complained about complexity, but when it simplified they were pleased and stayed quiet, meanwhile the people who love complexity were doing the same dance essentially just to a different tune.

Doc, easiest way is to just pillar upp with ice blocks and then mine your way down without silktouch. You get all source blocks and an easy way down as well :)

@Angi_Mathochist
@Angi_Mathochist 6 лет назад
Except if it's really tall, then you have to keep swimming back up for air. Or use waterbreathing, which adds to the cost. Every method has its own complications.
@neeldas8955
@neeldas8955 6 лет назад
Angi Long you could theoretically use a aqua affinity helmet and break the ice column from below while having soulsand at the end for momentum and replenishing breathe. Another way would be to use frost Walker and place a water source at the top and pillar down. Simpler then kelp for extremely large builds because they can only go till 25 blocks but it adds the cost of frost Walker
@Angi_Mathochist
@Angi_Mathochist 6 лет назад
rayn anderson I don't think that your first suggestion here would work because you only get a water block when you break ice if there's a solid block underneath. Mining it from the bottom while in water would not make it a source block. Also I'm not sure what you mean by your frost walker suggestion, exactly. Frost walker only freezes the top layer, and doesn't it only freeze water that is already a source block? I'm not sure, but in any case, I can't see what you mean by mining down a column of flowing water wearing frost walker. Can you explain?
@neeldas8955
@neeldas8955 6 лет назад
Angi Long ah, my mistakes on the first method. The second method relies on you placing a water block on the top of the elevator and equipping frost Walker then pillaring down from top then the frost Walker would freeze the flowing blocks one by one which means they would melt forming source blocks.

Java and Bedrock editions are supposed to be moving closer together, but for some reason kelp doesn't work the same way in both, so you can only use this trick in Java. In Bedrock, kelp will break off in a flowing water block. I used this trick in a kelp farm that doesn't require any redstone... kelp will grow up into a flowing water block and break instantly, and the pieces float to the surface where they can be collected.
@joshuarosen6242
@joshuarosen6242 6 лет назад
I'm really not sure where Mojang is going with Bedrock and Java editions. The fact is that Bedrock is pretty crap in many respects. Lots of mechanisms that work well in Java don't work at all in Bedrock. I tried Bedrock for a couple of weeks but I just didn't enjoy it. Unless the unified version, if it ever comes, is almost entirely like Java and not like Bedrock, a lot of people will simply stop playing.

In bedrock the bubble column works in flowing water. No need for source blocks, just have to make sure the column is surrounded. It takes a couple of seconds for the bubbles to reach the top but then you're good to go.

What a great little trick! Thanks Doc! Has anyone noticed that kelp (or possibly sea grass...) seems to effect squid spawning? This is just anecdotal, but I feel like all the lakes I filled with kelp and sea grass around my base (old map) no longer spawn squid, wondering if any one has noticed similar?
@Angi_Mathochist
@Angi_Mathochist 6 лет назад
I don't think it's the plants. I think it's that squid are now sharing their mob cap with fish and dolphins. I'll bet you're getting the same number of total passive water mobs spawning.

Samm Just now I must try this!
@joshuarosen6242
@joshuarosen6242 6 лет назад
I tried that but it didn't work. I presume you meant placing a sand block so it falls under gravity (as opposed to throwing a block of sand in as an item). It fell all the way to the bottom, turned into an item and returned but it appeared to have no effect on the water flowing from the top.

I play on a Bedrock Realm and the upstream didn't even need water source blocks to work. It just goes up the downward stream full speed. Also, it wasn't possible to place the kelp into a stream since it would break if it's not in a source block.
@Angi_Mathochist
@Angi_Mathochist 6 лет назад
Doc, that's awesome! I had no idea kelp did that. I just built a tall bubble-vator in the End to get up to my TNT dispensing machine (wipes out all the end crystals as soon as the dragon spawns, VERY nice), and I made it 1 block too close to a pillar and have to move it now (the pillar regeneration breaks about 12 blocks on the side of it). I wasn't looking forward to that at all and thinking it would be less work to just repair it every time it breaks. Now I know how to do it with so much less work! :D Useful tip of my own: The TNT machine is not my invention and not very new, but not very well known. (Pixlriffs is one who has used it in a video.) But in testing it, I came up with another idea, and my wife and I used it today with great success. First, we replaced the top layer of end stone all around the portal with an area of obsidian about 4 blocks wide. We added "blocker" blocks in the middle of each side just next to the bedrock. Then, as soon as the dragon lands on the portal, you place a bed just beyond one of the "blocker" blocks, so its foot is on the bedrock and its head is toward the central pillar of the portal and the dragon. Stand behind the "blocker" block and activate the bed. BOOM! It takes a MAJOR chunk of the dragon's health, and sends you flying WAAAY up in the air. Have feather falling 4 or just count on dying a few times -- either way, it's fun as hell. And the obsidian layer makes it so all you have to clean up is some fire -- no torn up landscape to repair or trip over during the remainder of the fight. I challenge you to use this to kill a dragon in Hermitcraft 6! I would love to watch that. :D
@neeldas8955
@neeldas8955 6 лет назад
Angi Long the bed method is actually the fastest way to kill an ender dragon, speed runners use it. Can be done without armour
@Angi_Mathochist
@Angi_Mathochist 6 лет назад
rayn anderson Yes, I know. (Though you get thrown so far, I'm not sure how they manage without armor. Probably more experience with getting the exact right spot behind the blocker block, I suppose.) The bit that's my invention is (1) doing it at the portal while the dragon is perched, which is so much easier than trying to get the timing and placement right while she's charging you, and (2) lining that area with obsidian in preparation so you don't wind up with craters to navigate and repair afterward.
@neeldas8955
@neeldas8955 6 лет назад
Angi Long actually the knock back can be neutralised by being one block below where the bed is to be placed. this speed running method was used in pre 1.8 versions. It's been made far simpler now as food saturation acts as a quick regen 4 and dragon lands in static time periods instead of that random sweep ins out of no where.

but how do you make them without any blocks around to hold the water?

Wouldn't it just be easier to stack ice blocks and then break them? Just pillar up with them inside the shaft and then look down and just break them. Very little work.

I've been using ice. Place some ice, break it with a pick, rinse and repeat.

for big areas where you need source blocks, could you just place a grid of kelp on the bottom and then let it grow?

Can kelp be placed on a soul sand block? If it can that would make for some super fast kelp farms. I'm assuming it can't though.

You don't need this in bedrock edition. You place water at the top, let it flow to the soulsand and it works. Don't need to be source blocks on bedrock edition

You do not need to put all this klep only make a very small elevator and apply these instructions inside the video and then increase the length of the elevator for the distance you want and then put a bucket of water on the end of the elevator and will work without permission to raise the klep all that distance
