Mini Cooper Electric 2023 review: Is fun and funky enough for you to choose this EV? 4K

It is fun, and it is funky - and those are two positive points for the 2023 Mini Cooper Electric. But there's a catch...
Well, it's expensive, and it doesn't have very much EV driving range compared to other cars that cost less.
Whether that matters to you or not will be determined by what you want from an EV. If you think a premium hatchback with compact dimensions and fun driving dynamics is right for you, then maybe you can forgive the 233km driving range claim, and the $60K-plus price tag.
Or you might be thinking, 'damn, I could get a Hyundai Kona Electric, or Kia Niro Electric, or Mazda MX-30 EV, or even a Model 3 for similar money!'...
In this review, our resident new-energy vehicle expert Tom White judges the Mini in context of its rivals, but with consideration given to what the Mini brand is all about. Watch to see what he thinks of the new 2023 Mini Cooper Electric hatch.

I just love the mini as a brand and although you don't really get value for the money in buying their cars, it's more about the experience and the fact that you own something that is unique and fun not only to drive but also to look at! 🙃 I've owned the Countryman and it was an amazing car! Obviously not an EV but i feel like if mini chooses to make another EV model, i rly do hope they make a Countryman version too! With a bigger and better battery!

I got value for money when I bought my Mini Cooper. It's extremely well made, handles like a go-cart, comes with a four year warranty with maintenance included and it looks fabulous. What more can you possibly want?

I've had three minis. This is the only electric car I would ever consider purchasing. It's the cheapest EV for sale in the US. (Especially if you live in states such as Tennessee. $10K total tax credits)

Of over 50 cars I've owned, the BRG '23 hardtop SE is near the top: super FUN to drive, brilliant power delivery, solid, quiet, quirky and anticipated to be extremely cost effective long term (this model was $29k US and additionally got $7.5k tax credit). Having the Wallbox and X3 at home are extremely complimentary to the overall experience.

$55,000++++ for a dated, low range Mini badge? Perfectly suited for a city dweller who doesn’t go anywhere. Just na.👎🏼

Won't do well in this economy, but a next generation on a dedicated EV platform may have potential if they retain the price range.

I love the amount of compromises you would have to make to own one of these. It’s not quick, roomy, range, technology, boot space, reliability or price. Tell me again why I would buy one?

The catch word, STYLE. B&O products never surpass the level of technologies of it’s contemporaries because they do not own any of the best tech. Yet, people still buy them with a lot more cash.

It may not work for you, but works for many others. I for example love mine, it's ideal. And don't believe the 0-100kph in 7.3 it's not true, these are actually in the low to mid 6s range, I got mine on the stopwatch at 6.3s

A hoot to drive, it's FUN!, quiet, solid, quality materials, easy to park, and efficient (>6.5 km/kWh). The power delivery is smooth and it's so easy to drive in traffic and the re-gen works so much better than heel-to-toe engine breaking in turns. Of the over 50 cars that have all had (each with their purpose) and this has truly been one of the best. I am fortunate to have a Wallbox at home and not going to the gas station is part of the experience. The family gets around all over the place for 3-4 days before plugging in (here, winter rates are $.07/kWh and there's off-peak 12-6a rate that provides 400kWh $0). If needing longer trip, we've got the SUV, so it stays in the garage.

If you did have the infrastructure to recharge these things, it would probably take you about 4+ days to get to Darwin from day Brisbane. Probably half that time in a petrol / diesel powered vehicle.

I've just done a little over 300km on a quarter of a tank of fuel... Probably get (realistically) my usual 900+km out of a tank with city / highway mixed driving. For the moment I think I will stick with good old proven combustion engines... Maybe when these EVs can get around 800km on a single charge, take 15 minutes to recharge and a 10 year warranty on the battery, then would consider, but I think that's a fair way off yet...
@MatthewBayard
@MatthewBayard Год назад
With an EV you charger at home and leave with a full charge each day. You don't need 900+km of range in an EV.
@michaelallen3918
@michaelallen3918 Год назад
@@MatthewBayard if you are going on a long distance drive like I regularly do, good range is essential. Don't fancy trying to find a charger in some small town that hasn't got one. At least with petrol / diesel you can carry a jerry can to get you out of trouble, run out in an EV, you could be on a tilt tray back to the nearest charger... EVs probably (at this point in time) are a good choice for local city driving...

@michaelallen3918
@michaelallen3918 Год назад
@@Colgateras which is fine until the battery finally expires... I'm not sure what vehicle you are driving, but hopefully you won't have to pay an exorbitant amount of cash for replacement. Lot of people complaining about how expensive replacement batteries are for EVs. Hearing from $8000 - $28000, depends on the car. Still prefer ICE, can last a lot longer than battery powered car with correct and regular maintenance.
@Colgateras
@Colgateras Год назад
@@michaelallen3918 also mini cooper se. I'm reading lots of articles that say that battery life generaly surpases life of the vehicle itself. But the ones that have problems with them make a lot of noise. I have the car 2 years already, 0 problems until now and is a cool and fun driving car. But is not for everyone, for the ones that travel a lot and make many kms each day is better to look at another ev with big battery. I was a petrol head, big motors, nice sounds etc... Not even thinking about buying a gas vehicle anymore after having this one. I pay in my home 0.03€ kw/h. From 1am to 7am I make 1000 km to 1500km per month... paying 5€ bill connecting the car only on those hours, compare that with gas price. Also every day I wake up with full battery, almost never doing 200km on one day if it's not for travelling wich I rarely do. Imagine the cost of gas in 10 years it was almost 2k€ in gas with my last car a year, so it’s 20k€ in ten years. The car is paying for itself. I also apreciate silence in cars now

Minis fall behind all the competing models so that comparisons seem a foregone conclusion. But I really wanted to know how this EV version actually compares to the competition. Instead it is constantly compared to the other minis or its substantial negatives are converted to weak positives. That isn’t very helpful.

Regular minis are too expensive and overrated. Electric minis are a goddamned insult. Went to customize one on their website. 50k$ for an urban runabout with outdated range and tech is a invitation to throw tomatoes. But fangirls will spend the money.
