I am genuinely jealous of this pricing! Being in America we have these prices for US cars but I am looking at getting my engine machined, cleaned and forged internals on the bottom end and rebuilding the top end at $7k USD and roughly another $6k on timing, coolant thermostat and piping, oil pump assembly, clutch, radiator etc. basically doing what you're doing. It will be over $13k USD and that's me doing it myself with my friends. 😭

That would be $4620.00 would be interesting to purchase same parts here and see the difference. Great job on the rebuild. You deserve a medal 🥉

Thanks for the detailed breakdown of parts. Apart from a couple of 'biggies', it does show that even though the others seem very reasonable and small change, the sheer number of them adds up to a death of 'a thousand cuts' for a fairly cheap car even without labour cost/time!

It always costs money to do things properly, but i'd rather do it properly and know it should be reliable rather than having to constantly work on it replacing parts you didn't in the first place

First you have the valve cover, exhaust and intake electrovannes, head, timing chain, thermostat, fuel high pressure pump since im working for a peugeot dealer i know those engines very well good luck to you !

Most people pay far more than that on PCP or HP in just the first year & 3 years later they still don’t own a car ! So £3800 is a bargain for a good car that you actually own,people are obsessed with having a ‘new’ car that is never there’s!

I have a few questions: 1. Is it worth spending almost 4k on rebuilding an engine when you could buy a decent car for that. 2. Will insurance companies pay you the extra 4k in the event of a crash? I've always wondered this as I feel like if I ever spend 4k on fixing up my BMW X1, my luck would mean the day after it is finished someone would run a red light and end up writing my car off lol! 3. Could you not just buy a scrapyard engine for the fraction of the cost? 4. Maybe the mini is a bad design, but I feel like if the car is old enough that the engine needs rebuilding, then perhaps there's a bunch of other things on their way out like wheel bearings, rusty chassis etc. Does it really make sense to rebuild the engine of an old car? To me it seems like putting lipstick on a pig at that point? 5. I assume It doesn't, but does this affect the MOT/Odometer? And lastly, would you actually end up selling the car for a profit? I feel like if you need to rebuild the engine, the car is old enough to the point where there's probably a bunch of identical ones on the market and people wouldn't be willing to spend an extra 4 grand to get basically the same car but with a new engine, especially considering my points earlier about other parts of the car such as rusty chassis, gearbox wear, driveshaft wear, wheel bearings etc. Definitely fun to watch though! I can understand it from a classic car perspective, but I think personally it makes more sense just to scrap the car and buy an identical one unless you're able to get the car for free or 4 grand less than the market cost?
@GeorgeAusters
@GeorgeAusters Год назад
You won't buy a decent one of these cars for near £4k.. They will all require big money to be spent on them. I am overhaulling the entire car.. all suspension, steering components and bearings are being replaced so it will virtually be a brand new car when i'm finished. I don't care what people say but restoring a car definitely adds value.. I would rather buy a virtually brand new car than one that needs £10k spending on it to sort all the problems
@andrewthompsonuk1
@andrewthompsonuk1 Год назад
I think that rebuilding engines like this and going over cars will become more common as cars become more expensive. In the past a car of that age was starting to look bad due to rust and general detonation of the interior. It makes logical sense to spend this amount of time and money to have a car that will last another 10 years and 100K miles. Unfortunately used values do not take overhaul type work into consideration so to sell it (or loose it to an insurance loss) would be a loss to you.

Don't know ..in less than 5 years, i predict the the government are going to start screwing us on the cost of petrol and diesel and road tax to make us swap to EV's, Lot of real IC enthusiasts are going to be very pi**ed off ........i suggest George switch to very old classic car status BMW'S, to get around some of their planned changes.

Hello George, great work on the N14 rebuild!! My N14 appears to be burning oil, I have changed the usual valve stem seals so now Im thinking piston / oil control rings now. I notice it more after an overrun when I blip the throttle after and obviously when I get out the car......Any idea other than rings as I guess it will be a 77.5mm rebore and oversize pistons to correct?
@GeorgeAusters
@GeorgeAusters Год назад
Likely need a rebore👍🏻
@LynxStarAuto
@LynxStarAuto Год назад
It could also be plugged up oil control rings. These cars call for a ridiculous oil change interval which results in carbon build up on the rings and pistons. Look up a product by BG (it's an American product) called BG Dynamic Engine Restoration Service. It's like an engine flush, but does a deep, deep cleaning. There are videos here on RU-vid. It's a multi step process, and I personally have done it to a plethora of MINI's, and depending I've had a higher than 50% success rate. I have 3 MINI's in the fleet, and all three had oil consumption issues. I fixed two of them with the flush. The third I diminished greatly, but that one has 122k miles and I know it needs a turbo and valve stem seals. Check it out *BG Dynamic Engine Restoration Service*
