I got a non-genuine valve cover replacement for my N14 mini R56 Cooper S. Found it has a manufacturing defect and so did the replacement. Here's how to fix it.
Also includes an explanation of the PCV system workings.

Note: Correct N14 crankcase / valve cover vacuum is 22 millibar. This could be checked by making a DIY 'manometer'. See link below. 22 millibar is 8.8 inches of water. rennlist.com/forums/996-forum/988695-intro-and-dismay-4.html#post14211741

Can you run a hose from the back of the valve cover to a catch can (1in 2 out) then on the outlet side of the catch can run a hose to the intake and a hose to the intake manifold and put a breather on the side of the valve cover that you would normally hook to the intake. Do you think that would lose any positive or negative pressure?

I bought mine for 100$ because I didn't trust ebay ones. Well after I installed it my idle was higher than normal and after 50 miles the check engine light came on. It was p0507 (idle control system higher than expected). After having this issue I started googling and I found you video. I checked the valve you were showing with a mirror and sure enough it was open. Turn the engine on and it was sucking air.... I just wanted to thank you for helping with you video!

The large circular disk has another valve under it usually the main cause it gets gunked up sticks shut or open it shut fluctuate so oil doesn't come up most suffer with white gunk like a head gasket from huge rocker cover causing condensation so check that too it doesn't come open easily so buy a genuine new part will fix 99% of idling problems and gunked up inlet valves as the vapours burn on .. I put an extra oil catch in too works a treat

Good info. Thanks! If i have to install an oil catch can (OCC) on the passenger side, can i just plug/close the intake manifold (no hose). So inlet side of the OCC will be the oil and the outlet side will just be an air filter breather (instead of connecting a hose heading to the intake manifold)? Thanks👍

250th subscrober yeah! I'd be interested to hear what you've used to install the OCC on the intake side (hose inner diameter, what type of collars, etc). I have one on the turbo side but the hose at the back is much less accessible, made flimsy plastic and connects to at least one plastic nipple _which makes collars tightening frightening....

hello .. the video is very interesting and I think you are the only one on RU-vid that explains this problem and the operation of this valve cover and PCV ... I have also changed it as well as a plastic called polyamide because it withstands more heat but Unfortunately it comes with exactly the same problem...I want to ask you a question and I don't know if you remember the design of the valve correctly...instead of taking off the top cover, couldn't you push the valve with a screwdriver? the guide in the center of the valve is glued or is a joint piece and must be cut by obligation.... looking for a lot of information on this subject in some forum I have read that they come like this to avoid oil consumption and that the engine valves are not dirty ... in my car when starting in first gear I am noticing how the engine shakes a little then everything goes normally ... I have disassembled the tube that goes from the PCV to the turbo and everything is dry and clean...with the obd machine I get the same 2B64 code...could the engine be affected if it doesn't solve this? I await your response... greetings and thanks for your time

For me, the new valve cover in neutral position, draws air a lot from the right side where the hose from the turbo is connected and shows p2279 error, and coolant radiator fan running in full speed & dont stop.It new valve cover, bat is not geniun part oem.

Nope not the piston rings, its the crappy PCV system. Check the hose that goes to the intake for cracks first and then install two catch cans. Once the engine burns all the oil you most likely have in the intercooler you'll stop blowing smoke. You'll probably also want to clean your intake valves.

Not only is it bad to block them off bcuz of less - pressure it's also bad bcuz water will build up in the crank case from heat cycles which will make goopy oil since the water is not being sucked out. Don't block them off if your not gonna change your oil at very short intervals such as 2000 to 3000 miles or every 3 to 4 months. This is not an opinion it is proven fact.
