I would like to see a beginers backpack tutorial from you, if possible. Your videos are so easy to follow, you're such a great teacher! Thanks a lot! :-)
Whenever I see a new video of yours it automatically makes me smile!!! Your personality makes your videos so enjoyable to watch!!! Thank you for taking so much of your time to share with us!!! I hope you know how greatly appreciated you are!!!? ❤️
You are so SO sweet Melissa! I have never felt as much love as I have since I started this channel. I love hearing how these videos help people follow a pattern or brighten a day. Definitely feel like I have accomplished some big life goals. Thank you!
6 hours, 40 ounces of Mountain Dew, a half a bag of pretzels, and a bunch of rewinding this video, and it is DONE! I just finished making this little tote for my girlfriend. This is my first tote ever. It turned out fantastic! YOU, Jessica are a rock star. If I can pull this off watching your tutorial, anybody can. Thank you for the great instructions!
As a long time shirt maker, I always stitch a triangle at the upper corners of the pocket, starting and stopping at least 1/2” below the top of the pocket, or at the bottom of the top cuff if the pocket if there is one. I also sometimes reinforce that area with interfacing to prevent the pocket corner from causing a tear in the body of the shirt.
I’m looking for the woven fuse 2 and quilt cotton. Would you be so kind and send me the link or if you purchased in a store then what store did you buy it. I went to hobby lobby and they have never heard of these two items. I also went on Amazon and again I was unable to find it. Please Please please help and thank you for sharing.
Thank you for the great tutorials. I am a beginner and you find the easiest ways to make beautiful totes, thank you so much. I would like to see a video on how to make reusable produce bags. I am trying to eliminate plastic bags.
I've made so, so many of these, in various sizes. The smaller ones are handy for managing small collections of stuff that need to be portable. One has all my prescriptions and supplements, another the bits for a hand sewing project I can pack up easily for travel. I do prefer making my own straps out of matching fabric.
would those WPC straps work to make an adjustable cross body? Im just wondering if it would be ok for a H2O2GO bag ... and TY for this video. loved it.
What kind of needle and weight and brand of thread do you suggest for this bag when using two layers of canvas? Are those 10oz canvas pieces? Great tutorial, by the way! Thank you so much!
This is Mrs Pete. This is a fantastic size bag. Made these for trick or treat bags. -12 in total. And of course my husband had the fun of filling them with goodies for our 5 favorite neighbors kids, nieces and nephews.
Hi Jess. Just came across this cute, just right, tote. Do you have any suggestions/tips for using on for the outside and waterproof canvas for the interior and the straps? Would appreciate any advice. I have a mermaid fabric panel for the outside pocket. I love the hand sanitizer holder - don't have an embroidery machine but can certainly whip up a little pocket for the sanitizer and/or ear buds etc. Thank you for posting the smaller size. I am still catching up on your videos. Watching you from West Palm Beach, FL. Maybe we will meet some day. I have already bought my ticket for Sew Magical next September.
Super cute. I was going to order the fabric for the interior until I saw it has PVC. Bummer....maybe there is a water resistant alternative?? Thanks so much.
I miss your tutorials. It seems all you do now is your boxy bags and the kits you sell....☹️ You taught me so much about bag making I will forever be a fan. Just saying. (I also understand you are a person with a busy life, so I get it and no hard feelings and no criticism, just saying i miss youl
This little bag is so darn cute and the little hand sanitizer pouch to go in it. What a great idea!!! Will be making a ton of these. I love all your fun tutorials. Thank you so much!!
Jess, love your videos! I could watch you make this same tote dozens of times (and I think I have!). I've made about 40 using your original video (mostly late Christmas gits), but have always added the loops for the grocery store plastic bag holders. I made my loops longer and sewed them like the handles, sticking out at the top so they would be easy to see and use. The reality check is that I'm the only one who uses them when I go to self check out. I've used bags at lots of stores and had discussions with many checkout clerks. The bottom line is th clerks I've spoken with don't find them useful. One gal told me the only time she does is if they also have the side loops to hook onto to the metal plastic bag holder so the bag actually stays open. I use twill tape for the top loop and put side loops on a couple of my newer bags, but again, it seems like I'm the only one who uses them... I'll continue to add them, but just cause they look so cute! Looking forward to your next video.
That's great information Nancy! Thank you for sharing. I know our grocers are also not using the loops, they seem fine filling the bags without that. It's always good to have options, you just never know!
I was going to tell you last week that you had your waterproof canvas backwards but I thought maybe you did it on purpose!! I think it's the kind of fabric that backpacks are made from. Thanks for the tutorials and look forward to them!
Hi Jess!!! This is EXACTLY what I need!!! Thank you! Quick question...have you seen the Pro Tuff Outdoor Fabric from Walmart? If so, is it comparable to the waterproof canvas you used in the video? My Walmart sells it for $4.97/yd. Thanks again for always inspiring me to be a better sewer. Stay safe. 👍😉
Perfect easy & pretty bag for groceries. I’m gonna make multiple sizes. I love the way you popped in the video to talk about the waterproof canvas. Personally I think the waterproof canvas looks good either side depending on the look your going for. The “ wrong side” looks like raincoat material. I live in Florida also so I love your Mickey ears ring🖤. Thanks again for your sweet teachable spirit. 💜
I really do like your original video with your first grocery tote. You're so energetic and so cute! Keep the videos coming. You explain everything very well. :)
This is great. I’ve subbed you now after watching your tote bag videos. These would be great for my grandaughter s and as I have an embroidery machine , I can personalise them. TFS 🙏🙏🙏
Just accidentally erased my whole comment. Ok, I’m making the original big bag from the first video but adding the loop from this video but I’m planning on trying for the first time to use for the liner Pellon 940 Silver Lining...I’m hoping this makes it a thermal bag! My questions are can I still add the loop and also do I still need another liner?
I just recently made one of the original grocery bags and am teaching it as a sewing lesson for a middle schooler. It's possible I've watched that video at least a dozen times. I do have one question: I'm never satisfied with the results of boxing corners doing the fold, sew, cut method, but I'm not sure how to make the cut, fold, sew method (cut squares out of the corners before sewing) with French seams. Is there a way to do both? Thanks!
Amazing content! In your opinion, do you like using the pul fabric as the interior lining or waterproof canvas? Also, for reference, what size are your customized labels?
Hi Jess, How about face masks. For adults, cut 2 9x6 rectangles, 1 of flannel (for against the face) 1 of quilting fabric. Cut 1 8.5 x 5.5 cotton or cotton/poly blend batting. Cut 2 7" sections of 1/8" flat elastic. Sew batting to wrong side of flannel, by stitching diagonally from corner to corner, creating an "X". Next stitch one section of elastic to one corner of mask right side, then making sure the elastic isn't twisted, stitch to same side, short-side corner. Do the same on the other side. Now place fancy fabric on flannel, making sure the elastic is between the fabrics and out of the way, right-sides together. Start on one corner of long side and stitch all the way around, with a 1/4" seam, leaving a 4" gap for turning. Turn and use elastic to help pull out the corners. Fold in the edges of the opening used for turning and top stitch 1/8" from edge. Now create two pleats on each short side. I clip these with wonder clips. Starting over the 1/8" top stitching, top stitch all the way around 1/8" from edge, go very slowly over the pleats. Once you have gone all the way around, reinforce by top-stitching again 1/4" from edge. I have photos if you want them.
Thank you Kathleen! Are you in the Facebook group, OklaRoots Creatives? I know folks there have been discussing face masks and would appreciate your suggestions as well.
I luv everything you make!!! I need to make at least one of each. You make it look so simple and easy. I look forward to watching new videos you put out! Keep up the good sharing!!💗
I love your videos. I made the other tote bag and it was beautiful and very sturdy. I’m wondering if you have or if you can make a video on how to make an easy basic apron? Please and thank you! 💕
Love the bag. I’ve made “My Favorite Tote” and this is another great tutorial. What size hand sanitizer fits in the holder you show. Would love to make them, but am afraid it would be hard to find a Universal size to fit in it.
Yea, unfortunately hand sanitizer bottles are such different shapes. I'm using the small bottles from Bath and Body Works here, and I just refill them as needed.
Hi. I watched your tutorial on the grocery tote.last week. Never made one before. I have two lovely bags now. One with a pocket. I'm so pleased with them x
I have 9 grandbabies and everyone is going to get this bag for their Easter bags. What an amazing idea! You are such a joy to watch and you make my Mondays a great day.Thank you so very much and keep up the great work🙋
I keep checking your videos...for EVERYTHING, ONE THING I LOVE...Can you explain that HUGE HOT PINK THREAD! I use Hot pink thread all the time, so it caught my attention! Can you do a THREAD VIDEO, AND CAN YOU PROVIDETHREAD LINKS FOR PURCHASE! Jess you are one of a kind! STAY THAT WAY, LOVE YOU GIRL!
Hey thanks loving these totes! I tried to improvise and fused my two pieces with heat n bond lite now I keep getting a birds nest.. any ideas how to fix? Thanks.
Is the birds nest only when starting to sew, or the entire stitch? If just in the beginning, hold the thread while you start and you'll be fine. If it's the entire stitch, it's possible your needle is sticking to the fabric. I haven't worked with Heat n Bond, but I use silicone needles sometimes (by Schmetz) with vinyl to prevent the sticking.
I know I have commented before but I Really love 💖✨🌹this bag ❣️❣️ I need something like this in a crossbody bag for my phone , size for the large iPhone Sx-max . Do you have any ideas?
Can you make a video making a tote with directional fabric. Just found your channel and I think you are awesome! Love watching. Thanks!!! Happy seeing.
found you recently - LOVE your channel. This has nothing to do with the video - BUT I saw your unboxing for the "770" and was wondering if you are going to do an update video to let us know how you are feeling about it. I see a machine in the background of this video that ISNT the one that you unboxed and you aren't using it in this video either. Just wondering whats up with the new machine. Thanks for your time
Haha thank you for the kind words! So I do plan to do an update on the 770, it has been an up and down relationship. The machine behind me is the Bernina 350, and I adore it. It's great for traveling, but also my favorite for piecing quilt blocks. I have 3 machines that I use in different videos.
Jess I absolutely love this tote and am looking forward to making it. I was wondering, should I pre-wash the canvas and waterproof fabric before sewing?
No for the waterproof product but if using cotton canvas that is likely to be made into a household bag then I would prewash and press cotton canvas. Some I find have numerous wrinkles others not so much.
I made a bag just like this for my son as his trick or treat bag. The only problem I have is that it’s flimsy. So it looks like I’m going to be making a new Halloween bag and Easter baskets for the kids this week. Haha But I’m going to have to do something waterproof on the bottom. Because knowing my kids they will set it down in mud!
Haha that's a great idea Shelby! That waterproof canvas works great, so you could probably use it for the exterior. And it can definitely take a beating!
I just found you on RU-vid last week and I just joined the Facebook group. I love your content. I was planning on making the grocery totes this weekend and now I’m going to add this size. I think this will be a great size for summertime and needing to carry my sunscreen and other summertime necessities. I think it would make a great book bag as well. I love your content so much. I’m from Oklahoma. Is that what oklaroots stands for?
That's fantastic Joy! Welcome to the group! I used to live in Edmond, Oklahoma, but moved to Saint Augustine, Florida a couple years ago. OklaRoots has a lot of meaning to me, and it originated while living in Oklahoma.
This was a delight to make.. 2nat a time, didn’t box the corners so it’s fully reversible ... Wonderful and absolutely adore the on screen tips, ie stitch lengths etc.,, Wonderful! Thank you 😊
I made these baby totes a few years ago, fully lined and gorgeous. no pattern lol. I made them for my grandsons second birthday, as goody bags for parents of kids that came. Turned out not many kids were there, so the adults got them all. roflol. My daughter loves hers, and gets compliments on them all of the time. She uses hers for a lunch bag to work. cuzz it has inside pockets as well as being reversible.
When making straps with interfacing, depending on the bulk of interfacing, I don’t carry it to the ends of the straps where they’re attached to the body. I shorten it by 2 or so inches. Much less sewing bulk, but I still have the support that’s needed for the strap
G’Day from Melbourne, Australia! Oh my goodness! This is my new fave tote tutorial! I’ve already made 3. Guess what everyone is getting for Christmas!!!! I have binged watched all your videos while recovering from surgery. Thank you sew much! Can’t wait for your next one :)
I love your videos and have made a dozen of the bigger grocery bags and will give them at Christmas. I have two in my car for myself! I'm going to hunt through my fabrics and make this one too - love the size! Thank you so very much for all you share - you make things doable and these bags have been a great use of the batiks I have hoarded for years!! Thank you so so much! Stay safe and be well!! XOXO Maureen
Hi Jess, Well Done this bag is sooo cute! I had to watch the video 3 times because the video kept watching me because I am recovering from surgery and couldn't stay awake haha. I made it🤣! I had an idea and think it would be so lovely to add a zipper panel and a flap with a magnetic clasp to turn this bag into a mini backpack. 🤔 When you were done and holding it up...that's what I saw. It had that shape to me. Another cute on Jess! Love it, love it!!
