No matter what type of mountain biking you are doing, unfortunately, punctures are inevitable and can leave you feeling deflated! There are many styles of bike pumps on the market and taking a mini pump or a CO2 inflator with you on a bike ride you'll always be able to get back up to pressure. In this video, Anna Cipullo talks you through the pros and cons of each style of pump.

If you are running inner tubes, it is standard practice to slightly inflate the damaged tube in order to find the location of the puncture on the tire, in order to remove the object that caused the puncture. This is more easily achieved with a pump.

Another option is a Fumpa, a rechargeable electric pump. Quick like a Co2. Seats tubeless tyres too. I've been using one for over a year.

I generally bring just a hand pump and a Tubolito tube because of how light they are. I do run tubeless, so the tube is for backup. Most of my rides, time isn't a concern. But if I am doing an event I will bring a CO2 inflator as well as a spare tube and pump. I do wear a pack and most events I do are longer endurance ones, not shorter XC races. If I get a flat, I pretty much just deal and realize I am going to lose a lot of time during an event. I focus more on survivability and being able to finish. That being said, I do make sure my tires are in good shape and that I have fresher sealant. I always make sure I am not careless on the trail. Part of being fast is making sure your bike survives the ride. Back when I was competitive I had a couple of times where I was in front or up front only to cause my chain to come off, crash, or get a flat because I took a poor line being in a hurry. Think like an auto racer, don't over ride your equipment to failure and you will place better. So I haven't gotten a puncture in quite some time..... knock on wood....😊

The topeak with the pressure gauge is realy good! It’s dual action so inflating a tire doesn’t take that long. I would recomend it, if someone’s looking for a small pump. Also for travelling

One up mini pump comes with a CO2 inflator built in and the canisters are stored inside the pump. Also comes with a bottle cage mount. A bit pricey but worth it 👌

I’m overly prepared and carry both CO2 & a mini pump now that I have a larger hydration pack. CO2 for me (speed/less effort), pump for my riding buddies or anyone I find on the trail in need.

It depends. Pump + pressure gauge most of the time. CO2 only on the XC bike. If the tire didn‘t want to seal immediately during the first mounting, I might take CO2 in addition to the pump, just in case.

Fortunately I’ve never needed either, but one time my tire got sliced on the side wall and wasn’t even repairable. But eventually I’ll probably get a hand pump!
@shrinkingshrimp
@shrinkingshrimp Год назад
As far as I know the tire sealants can be not compatible with the cold of co2 pumps (some sealants can freeze), not the co2 itself. And co2 slowly leaks trough the tire's material itself, thats why you have to pump it up after, not because it's not compatible with the sealant.

My first experience with a CO2 inflator was a nightmare. Punctured within the first mile of a race - heavy rain which lead to the whole nipple and valve stem being instantly incased in a block of ice and a 3/4 inflated tyre (and lost the inflator somewhere on the route). Managed to finish the race taking it slow... For most rides with friends will take a hand pump - and only on certain rides where a CO2 approach is absolutely the best option will take... The other thing for me is cost. CO2 cartridges ain't cheap compared to elbow grease - like as much as £2 a tyre - and even 'resealable' CO2 inflators seem to loose pressure fairly quickly.
@shrinkingshrimp
@shrinkingshrimp Год назад
Well you should not use anything first time in a race. You should practice even tire inflation before, thats why it's a good idea to use even co2 sometimes on group rides. But not just co2, even if you buy a regular pump you should check out how it fits to the valve, how to hold it, etc, and of course the same goes for every piece of equipment you bring to a race.

The CO2 cartridge does not cause an endothermic reaction. The decreasing pressure in the canister causes a compensatory decrease in temperature. (PV=nRT) This is how your air conditioner works at home.

For me, it depends on the situation. For racing, I take the CO2 (always carry two canisters). For long rides, 3-4 hours, on the road, I take (2) CO2 canisters. For MTB, short rides I take (1) CO2 canister. For long MTB rides 3-4 hours I have been taking (2) CO2 canisters. If not a mini pump and a CO2 canister.

As a major con you did not say anything about CO2 being a green house gas, cost of production,cost to recycle if even reach to recycle depot. And let's add the cost for transporting single use product. The only use of CO2 should be done in a race! We all love where we ride, and every single one can help preserve our environment with such simple thing-don't buy CO2!
@nealwright5622
@nealwright5622 Год назад
Where do you think the CO2 in the canister came from? They didn't dig it out of the ground like oil FFS
@radominchev920
@radominchev920 Год назад
True that most products are coming from China. But you can't do anything about that. What you can do is to look what you personally can do for that. The industry will pick up the trend. Let me ask everyone. How much tyres and old inner tubes are laying in your caves? How many plastic rapers have you trow out from a new part? Finally there is good biodegradable cleaning up products. And i have not touch on carbon. As far as i know only GG bikes are offering recyclable carbon frames. What is happening with your old cracked frame? I think that the problem about recycling and biodegradable products must be put from the riders to the industry. And I think that topic is a perfect for Gmbn tech.

Co2 canister - Not environmentally friendly
@AndrogyneMichinaga
@AndrogyneMichinaga Год назад
Whilst you said that C02 is single use, you did not mention the environmental impact of C02 cannisters. There is an industrial process that takes up energy and resources to make them and to transport materials and end product. All for a throwaway product that might get the cannister recycled - maybe. Remember that recycle is the last of the 3 R's: Reduce, Re-use, Recycle. A hand pump is reusable and can last for years. A C02 cannister is the opposite of reducing use of energy and resources. A C02 cannister is not re-usable. As for recycling, it's a maybe.

Co2 is bad for the environment, both as a gas and the fact it’s a single use throwaway product. The numerous advantages of a mini pump far outweigh the only single advantage of speed of inflation from Co2. Most people are not racers where every second is precious. A reusable device which allows precise pressure to be added and uses only the air we breath to work has to be the answer for the day to day rider. A Topeak Race Rocket is very compact and can live on the bottle cage mounts without affecting the use of the bottle cage. It’s always there and always works however many times you need it.
