When I put my mini lathe into reverse it caused the gears for the power feed to grind horribly. In this series of videos I take you with me on a journey to diagnose what the problem is and to work out how to fix it.
In Part 4 we're cooking on gas... We get the gearbox drilled out, make a new detent plunger and get it all re-assembled and ready to test.
The fix applies to the following lathe models: CJ0618, Crenex 7"x14", Clarke CL300M, Warco Mini lathe, Sieg C2 and many other brands which are based off the Chinese mini lathe design.
Part 1 Here - • Mini Lathe Reverse Gea...
Part 2 Here - • Mini Lathe Reverse Gea...
Part 3 Here - • Mini Lathe Reverse Gea...

great job. watched the first two episodes last night when i should have been sleeping and the last two episodes this morning when i should be doing my chores. anyway very entertaining and learned a lot since i was given a mini lathe by my best friend but he passed away before he had the chance to teach me how to use it. he was a machinist and had his own shop before he retired. really liked the way you thought out side the box when you had an obstacle in front of you made a work around and didn't give up

Thanks for watching and so glad you enjoyed it all. To me that's the fun of "Engineering at Home", it's like battlefield mechanics - you have to get the job done with whatever tools you have or can make. I wish you all the best with your mini lathe and I'm sure you'll do your friend proud with it 👍

Watching the cut you can see the deflection of the part( you can tell by the tool cutting on the reverse stroke) when your close quite often a spring pass and polish with emery tape is enough to get you there, gives a smoother finish too. On thread dies the first couple of threads are slightly smaller than the rest, same as a number 1 tap, so reversing the die and run it down again makes all the threads the same and the nut goes all the way rather than tightening on the last few threads.

Turned out much better. My lathe has the neutral notch already. I guess the manufacturer just did not drill yours. Enjoyed watching.

Thanks, I reckon my lathe was assembled from rejected parts which would explain why it has so many issues. Surprising how different the mini lathes can be from different vendors seeing as they all originate from the same factories.

what a journey! it definitely sounds better than before, even without reversing the motor you can hear the difference.

Yes, I thought it'd be a fairly quick fix at the start - little did I realise how much needed fixing. Deffo runs a lot smoother now. Onto fixing the next problem lol

On the second end the tool is sticking out far too far hence the chatter, it bends down and back rapidly making a vibration. Always have your cutting tool as short as possible. I'm commenting as the video goes on so as not to forget something, gives you more comments too LoL

It's GKN Speedread by GKN Shardlow Metrology of Sheffield England. I got it as part of a stash of measuring tools I won on eBay and it's become my favourite mic - lovely quality.

was that AJ comment in reference to Anthony Joshua the English Heavy weight boxer from Watford England

lol the AJ reference is from the movie Armageddon where A.J. always wants to push through a difficult drilling problem but Harry Stamper wants him to back off.
