I got a bit confused reading all that I'd written down about output/runtime before output drops per the lux meter I used (as well as the OEM's rating for Lux, so we can see how they compare, although I trust the OEM more than my Lux meter, it seems very spot on with the claims!). Here it is converted to minutes/seconds, as follows:
Modlite PLHv2, 18650:
-Instant on of 58,XXX Lux (Rated at "approximately" 54,000 Lux).
-At 3 minutes and roughly 20 seconds, 53,XXX Lux, and then it began dropping.
-It ceased dropping at 4 minutes and 30 seconds roughly, and 29,XXX Lux.
-I shut it off at 6 minutes and 15 seconds roughly, with no change from 29,XXX Lux.
-@30 seconds with CR123's: 54,XXX Lux. (No OEM rating given, the presumption is no change)
Cloud Defensive REIN 3.0 Micro (18350):
-Instant on of 102,XXX Lux (Rated at 95,000 Lux).
-Output began drifting a bit until it plummeted starting at roughly 28 seconds, coming to a stop at 1 minute and 10 seconds, roughly, down to 29,XXX Lux.
-At roughly 2 minutes and 50 seconds, I shut the light off, with no degradation from 29,XXX Lux.
-@30 seconds CR123 produced 39,XXX Lux. (No OEM rating given, although "expect performance degradation" is offered as a disclaimer.)
Surefire 340DFT-PRO (18350):
-Instant on of 95,XXX lux (Rated at 95,000 Lux)
-It held steady until roughly 1 minute and 30 seconds, when it drifted down to 47,XXX Lux by 2 minutes and roughly 55 seconds.
-It maintained 47,XXX Lux until shut off at roughly 4 minutes and 35 seconds.
-@30 seconds CR123 produced 51,XXX Lux. (Rated at 55,000 Lux).

I just upgraded from the M300C with 500 lumen head to the Cloud Rein Micro - you've done a great job comparing the sizes and weight. I didn't have the Surefire to compare but for my usage the Cloud really had better throw and spill than the Modlite PLHv2 at the expense of size and run time on the highest output. The Cloud puts out a lot of peripheral light. I added 1.8 ounces my rifle by moving up in weapon light weight but took my engagement and most importantly target ID capability from 25 yards to 150+ (running a 3x magnifier). Modlite with 18350 and the PLHv2 head is the best sized light by far - amazing performance for size. Keep up the great work on these videos - super helpful!

Its true, I hv the “og” ones also and Im guilty of getting the “throwers” as well….. my 340 is 500 lumens and runs forever. To get these crazy candelas it takes deep bezels and lots of juice. Thanks for pointing this out Sir.

I have a question, I’m currently running an Arisaka 300 w/ Malkoff E1HT. It was part of my first build primarily for home defense. Now that I’m shooting outside more and attempting those longer shots, I want to upgrade to something that’ll still give me enough spill for home defense, but also enough throw for longer shots. I’m really leaning towards an Arisaka 18650 w/ Modlite PLHv2 so I can still use CR123 batteries if need be and get longer run times. I was initially considering the REIN 3.0 micro, but after seeing how quickly the output decreases I decided against it. Have you tested any of the Malkoff heads like the H2XTL? Do you know how it would compare to the PLHv2? What would your recommend be?

I have not tested the Malkoffs in question, but based on the data available, the PLHv2 would supply similar throw but with a much heartier spill due to having double the lumens but similar Lux.

I see no point in the 350 size lights. I stick to 650 size lights or the older single cr123a lights.
