The Mini Moto's has been one of our favorite winter time flies for small to medium sized trout streams for years now. It's natural color, limited amount of flash, and baitfish profile have fooled hundreds of fish for us over the years.
I've done this tutorial several years ago on a different video platform, but it seems to have disappeared into space... The fly and tying style in this one is the same as the one I made 3-4 years ago.
It all came from fishing and liking the Moto's Minnow, but wanting something even smaller to try and bridge this gap between fish NUMBERS and SIZE. On the rivers I was fishing a lot the larger fish had a hard time passing up a well presented baitfish.
One of the added advantages of fishing small baitfish is, you don't have to worry as much about presentation. With a natural insect you need to present it as dead drift as possible because (usually) bugs don't move much in the water column. Baitfish do dip and dive some! This means it's a better fly for beginners as they can focus more on depth of presentation over dead drift.
It's a simple yet elegant fly - all natural - and tied the way I make them all you need is a Partridge Skin and you can tie hundreds of them in varying sizes and color variations!
