As a long time fan of Haynes Manuals (Dad has an impressive collection) I now work writing repair methods for a vehicle manufacturer and really appreciate how clearly you presented this. 10/10

Follow up. I did finish the rear brakes on my ‘18 4 dr S model. I was unable to reset the ‘brake’ fault warning however after reusing old sensor. Your results may vary, but save the hassle, and the extra shipping charges, and order sensor with brake pad kit. Only 10-20$. Worthwhile. It is impressive, and idiotic, that BMW has managed to create disposable sensors. The copper clip came off mine when I removed sensor, and apparently causes the sensor to fail, even when replaced. Easy job overall and this video is spot on.

To be fair to BMW, they do say that the sensors can't be reused. If they're not worn through, it may be possible to get the old clip to work again, but for the small extra outlay, is it worth it?
@dennisblack6042
@dennisblack6042 2 года назад
@@HaynesManuals I agree. And yes, it is a small outlay. And yes, when you buy a “bmw”, you are buying every single sensor and electronic gizmo in the world, which will increase maintenance costs. New cars are designed to be taken to the dealer by people who are not interested (or capable) in DIY. Thank you guys and ladies at Haynes for helping shadetree mechs like me to do some things ourselves. A Learning process for sure

…or if you are in the middle of the desert, you can cut the sensor pad off and twist the wires together, when the circuit is complete it thinks all is good, no more brake wear warning light, so keep an eye on them. Disclaimer: (cough) I would NEVER do it this way

First class explanation - Are the Haynes manuals now digital like this, so much easier than interpreting the written manuals (ie see section 1 for jacking, section 4 for brake reservoir, section blah de blah. This way its all in context and easy to follow.

What's this about the sensor needing to be renewed?
@HaynesManuals
@HaynesManuals 3 года назад
In order to replace the brake pads, the wear sensor (where fitted) must be pulled from the pad backplate. BMW/Mini insist that once the sensor is removed, it must be renewed. I believe this is because the clip that retains the sensor is distorted during the removal procedure, and therefore will not securely retain the sensor upon refitting. BMW/Mini don't supply the clip as a separate item. However, if the sensor is worn (activating the light on the dash), the sensor must be renewed anyway.

We've produced manuals for most variants of Mini from 1966! Pre-2001 are hard copy printed manuals only.

Is there any trick to lining those two pins on the inside pad with the dimples on the caliper piston? I spent 90 minutes wrestling with that. Bought the tool to rotate the piston back into the caliper. New pads wouldn't fit over the rotor. Ended up having to just slap on the old pads, and I'm going to take the car to a shop. Pretty disheartening, considering it's $700 to replace at a shop, and I bought the parts for $150. I've replaced numerous pads and rotors previously, and never had issues until working on German cars. It's like automotive knowledge gained throughout life doesn't help when working on German stuff.

@HaynesManuals Год назад
According to the manual, there's no requirement to align any pins on the inner pad with the cut-outs in the piston face. The cut-outs are there to aid piston retraction. Make sure the pad with the bulge in the backing plate is fitted to the inner location.
