excellent video. Thanks for your time. I am not an aircon guy. Everything was clear until minute 32 where you shut off the low side and you left the yellow line connected to the vacuum pump. if you did that, you have isolated the gauges from the system, of course the needle wont badge therefore the system isn't under test

I’m closing in on “geezer” status but your video and especially tool recommendations have given me the confidence to proceed. @@adamrspears1981 He may have misspoke but he didn't actually show or state that he looked for vacuum leaks by the soapy water test. I think most DIY people that attempt this level of project would realize he meant a bubble test for leaks once the system was pressurized. It is true that this unit requires professional install or it voids warranty but warranties with even professional installs are so difficult to claim and this unit carries a short warranty (longer on the compressor) with parts only so either way it's going to cost you plenty. I'm for anyone that can install one of these systems on their own with good self training and research.

Thanks for this video. I learned a lot from it. I bought Mr. cool 1800 BTU advantage serious. When I ordered it I thought that this is the one that you do it yourself DIY. All the videos on RU-vid is related to the DIY. Your video is the only one that I was able to find that gives you detailed info regarding the Advantage series. I did some mistakes initially as I connected the copper tubes before I pass in the wires through the wall conduit. After I saw your video I had to redo the whole thing again. @FabtecS5

Pretty good video, just a couple things you might want to correct though. During your leak test you pulled the vacuum on the system and said if there is a leak you would use a soap solution on the joints to find out where its leaking. That would be true if you were pressurizing the system not putting a vacuum on the system - unless you have a way of looking inside the line for soap bubbles ;-). Also you said they use an inverter system to take AC power and change it to DC to run the system. Inverters take DC and change it to AC. I think you mean't they use a rectifier system to change the the AC to DC. I would recommend torquing the joints to the specified torque - I don't think most folks know how strong they are when it comes to tightening bolts and these fittings are brass. You can strip them easier than steel which is what most people are use to wrenching on. Other than that I think your video was very good and most people would have a successful install if they followed it. Good job.

Good tutorial double wide, I purchased this unit to install myself. I ordered the Manifold gauge set from amazon since it came with the 1/4 inch adapter. BEWARE The threads on this adapter did not like the male threads on the unit for some reason. They appeared to be in good shape. If you do not get the adapter all the way on the valve stems will not engage. I realized this after close examination and several attempt at purging the lines. I finally got the adapter all the way on but it took too much effort. I looked up the manufacturer and its from Orion Motor Tech a Walmart brand ordered on Amazon. I'm sure it is made in China I lost half a day trying to determine and trouble shoot the problem. Word to the wise.

The adaptor I got with time kit was simply the wrong thread pitch, you still need to order the 5/16 - 1/4 pioneer (or the like) adaptor off Amazon.

Best Mini Split video hands down, I've watched too many to keep count. Wish you could have detailed more about the torque job, minus using a torque wrench, I'm installing mine as we speak or as I type, that is my only worry or concern in my install currently. Also, my only suggestion to anyone reading, ALWAYS run your refrigerant lines on the side that they are on, just add the 90 degree bend and run them directly out the hole you just drilled. DO NOT try to bring your refrigerant line in the hole, then connect and create a 90 degree .... I started that route and closed that whole up and went the simple route, i wasted 3 hours trying that direction and was left repairing a wall. Keep it simple

Thanks for making this video. I bought a Senville unit just like yours. I had bought one before in my last place, when the units went under the name of Shinco and it was a great unit so I had no hesitance in buying this one. One problem that I wanted to share, and for which I found a solution... When you install the right angle drain under the 12,000 btu model compressor it extends down too far! If you place the unit on a flat slab floor, the feet will no longer touch the ground. You therefore have to raise the unit on some blocks or something of the sort. After hunting around with various options I came across a genial idea - In the plumbing aisle fo the local HD I found some 3" ABS Cleanout Plugs - for about $1.80 each. These make perfect raised feet! They are strong, and you can drill a hole thought them for mounting. I even cut the rubber shock mounts to shape and sandwiched them between the feet and the top of the plugs. The effect is to raise the compressor about 2" - perfect to accommodate the drain outlet under the unit! Cheers!

Good job, man! I have some notes - first, i don't understand the Nylog compound, where the metal-to-metal contact is good enough, but no prepblem with it. Second, when you are releasing the gas into lineset, you perfectly start with line with no meter on it. You will not force the liquid int oyour hose, which is safe to you. Next time, you may release only a little gas just to get slight overpressure to minimize leak during hose disconnecting. Then release all the gas. Third, not sure with lineset not covered near the outdoor unit. But still this is really nice installation and yes, it is well done for a much less money than pros would ask you for.

As a electrician and hvac installer I actually genuinely enjoy watching diy videos . There is a reason we do so much school and learning . Your only saving grace will be the nylog , No positive or negative pressure test with nitrogen . Nor did you use a micron gauge ..... has nothing to do with pressure it’s to do with vacuuming moisture out of the system . Only tool to show this is a micron gauge you cannot see a leak on a manual manifold gauge . Micron gauges show this ........

Mathew, just wondering as I am a DIY er on a remote island in the South Pacific about to do the install. A few issues: 1: No professional HVAC guys period. 2: I dont have a torque wrench, micron gauge, nor that liquid Nog. So with that said: Can I pressure test the lines first and check for leaks. Then can I throw a vacuum on it for a few more hours to try and get more moisture out? Or longer vacuum if need be? 3: Is there anything else I can put on the lines if I didn't have Nog? Maybe teflon tape?

Nice job as a homeowner, very carefully done and neat. Only one misleading comment, as others mentioned. When the line set or a system is under a evacuation, that is a negative pressure, you can not do a bubble leak check, and to check for leaks by a loss of vacuum, is not a effective way to leak check. I believe the homeowner meant to say, you can do a bubble test after the system was pressurized, however pro's would do a leak check by pressurizing the lines with nitrogen and in some case use a tracer, that's if you use a electronic leak checker. Also I am not a fan of nylock, I would use flare seals. Otherwise, it's still a good installation.

Very good presentation. I'm in the process of installing a new Daikin ductless mini-split and have done considerable research after finding what seems possibly to be the inflated cost of having a licensed contractor do the job. I respectfully want to add a few pointers to this video. Please note that there is a Schrader valve in the freon system that needs be dealt with when vacuuming the system prior to releasing the precharged freon that is held in the outdoor unit from the factory. If the Schrader valve is not properly attended it prevents the indoor unit and lines from the vacuum process. If the lines and indoor unit are not subject to the vacuum the resulting contamination will void the installation and put the entire project at risk. The Schrader valve is similar to a valve core of a tire stem. One other pointer is that the outdoor unit could be more protected from lawnmowers and other life hazards like flying stones from the lawnmower or other debris that may cause harm. I am not a license holder for electric nor HVAC and am offended by the industry who considers all homeowners invalids when it comes to mechanics and technology because there are some homeowners with superior knowledge to that of the employees and controllers of the mega-corporations.

Thanx for the thorough and "honest" video.. Marking the white wire for use as a hot is necessary. When I use similar wire w/o a neutral (12-2 etc) I "heat" shrink red over all the exposed white (back to the Romex covering) for my purpose (just an idea for yah). Or I use (several) single conductors in a conduit. Another suggestion, I don't think the "soapy water" will work to easily detect a vacuum leak...soapy water is better used to detect "pressurised system leak. Again thanx for showing us how you did it.. your installation looks great...

Honestly l don't know. you bring up a good point with the soapy bubbles. if you get a vacuum: "negative pressure", and if there is a "leak"; it will be air moving from higher pressure "outside the line" to inside the line, "lower pressure"..it might make bubbles...but probably inside your line.

Good overview video. Very clean appearance after the install. Hopefully you will take the following as a constructive criticism. The raw wood you buried will rot quickly and attract termites. Don’t completely cover the flare joints at the top of the line set until you have released the charge. Once the charge is released, you can use soap to look for leaks. The nitrogen is in the head unit is used to keep out moisture. Manufactures do not recommend the use of Nylog on flare fittings. The gauges and hoses you have will not measure the deep vacuum of the 500 microns required to remove all moisture/air and it will not show the decay rate. The smallest amount of moisture in a system will shorten its life. This is why manufactures will not warranty a homeowners work. I would recommend that the DIYer install everything up to releasing the charge then call an HVAC guy to pressure test the system and evacuate it. The less than 1 hour charge you pay him will also validate the warranty.

If you end up doing another install just a heads up it’s not that only the small line is charged with nitrogen both lines are connected through the indoor coil. So which ever one you open first is the one that’s gonna piss the nitrogen out, but your correct it proves there’s no leak but not only for a line it’s for the whole circuit suction line liquid line and your indoor coil. And be careful with them bushes it could cause a high head pressure on your outside unit on cooling mode. Could cause problems. And it’s 410a refrigerant not Freon haha. Informative in all thanks for sharing your experience

Just I installed mine and vacuum checked so far all ok. If you are mounting the condenser on concrete I suggest you purchase a Harbor Freight hammer drill. It has a list price of $99 but with discount coupon you can get it for $70. Also suggest the 3/8” SDS concrete drill from Lowe’s with four cutting heads. After much frustration with a small hammer drill I found that the Harbor Freight set up made the drilling 1000% easier. Also suggest you use the 3/8” lag bolts from Home Depot. What you need to do is set the condenser where you want it, place the rubber feet at each attachment point and then drill the concrete through the attachment holes in the unit. Vacuum away the dust then hammer the lag bolts through the attachment points on the unit into the concrete. Then tighten the lag bolts with a 1/2” open end wrench until tight. You will probably need to remove the screen in front of the fan so you can access the foot at that corner. Hope this helps.

Great vid .Good explanation. I did my own install on a Senville 12k, in cold Canada Jan , 2014 , but it was the Aura series, which has a better SER rating than the Leto series. It has been going for 5 yrs now. There was no defrost heat strip in the base at the time, so i use a hot water hose to do a big de-ice if it needs it. I do not push the unit much below -15c. Sure you can still get heat below that but it is not as efficient . I don't see any point in working a compressor and 2 fans when your efficiency is low and you are getting close to a 1 to 1 efficiency ratio. I just shut it down on the remote and that keeps the compressor heater on, that i can hear, i believe. You might as well use electricity at 100% efficiency or the oil furnace , than use a heat pump and wear out you components. I just set my furnace and leave it it do what it has to do. IMO You cannot replace a 100k btu furnace with a 12k mini split. I complement my furnace which is my main heat source. I don't believe in moving the temp control around ,when it is running because the heat is so sutle, it takes a while to regain temp.I just leave it alone 24/7 when it is running. My total install was 1800$ Can. with the same tools you have . 1400$ W/O tools . Take care.

Overall good install. I would strongly suggest, however, using a micron guage while evacuating. That is the only way to know for sure that the unit is evacuated to the proper level and that the unit is leak free. The guage needle is not a reliable indication of a proper vacuum or a tight system. If you cannot use a micron guage then I suggest pulling a longer vacuum than normal. Let the pump run for an hour or two. You cannot over evacuate so the longer the vacuum, the better. I’ve been on some jobs where I would leave a vacuum pump to run over night. Larger equipment, of course but it’s the same principle. Also, you cannot use soap bubble as a leak detector until you pressurize the lines. Bubbles won’t form if the lines are still in a vacuum.

You did a very thorough job. I like how you met the challenge of the line-set length. Very thoughtful. I like your hind-sight thought better. ( placing the out-door unit far enough away). I have already had a Fujitsu installed by a local company. They did a good job. I had thoughts of doing it myself, but chickened out. But after watching your video and realizing you don't have to deal with refrigerant,(my biggest concern) I feel quite confident on doing an install for the master bedroom. Thank you very much for taking the time to produce a top quality video. I'm sure you could have done the install in half the time if you hadn't.

Before vacuum you have to purge system with nitrogen, this accomplishes 2 things... 1. gives you positive pressure to leak check connections 2. helps boil off any water inside lines (raising pressure lowers boiling point of water) When vacuuming system use a micron gauge, vacuum to at least 500 microns, below that is preferable. Before starting a vacuum you should test the pump itself to ensure it can even pull a deep vacuum. The pump itself should be able to pull at least down to 50 microns. With 26 years in this industry, there are some major "don'ts" done here. For starters, not torquing the connections... over torquing can cause flare ruptures = leaks and under torquing can cause flare nuts to vibrate loose. Painfully watching improper procedures, i sadly couldn't finish video. You must first calibrate your gauges (manifold) before each use to atmospheric pressure. Looking at gauges at 31:30 both sides do not read the same... not calibrated. You don't even know if you are at 30 in. Hg ....smh manual says negative 20??? my sides are splitting from laughing. Have you even researched anything hvac related? By not following proper vacuum methods you did not dehydrate system. Which tells me you had a wet system once you released refrigerant. So you now have moisture mixed in with refrigerant.... this will cause ice crystals in parts of the system and gas bubbles in others. mini splits are designed with eev or exv valves and several thermistors. You successfully set up your system with multiple future problems.... failed stator motor/s , failed compressor, and because of contaminated refrigerant... thermistors will read improper temps causing system unneeded ramping of motors causing efficiency to drop and unnecessary run times drastically reducing life span. Over working dc motors can cause capacitors on control board to fail, causing the need to replace a costly board... yes you have no warranty and will have to pay full price, and because of your lack of reading the manual and researching proper methods, you successfully damaged everyone's equipment who used this video regardless of disclaimer. laughing when you took off second plastic cap off suction line from head and said only "must've just had pressure on small line".... they both had pressure, you just released it all from the small line. remote mounted next to a door with windows? seriously? you dont think sunlight will heat up the remote and cause a false air temp reading? Drain line has to be below line set as it exits wall for drainage.. no mention of that to viewers. Hopefully that was done... Call a professional, have them watch your video so they know where to start. Good luck.

I’m sure they teach it more often. On that note I’m sure he saved him self money as well as gained knowledge of a self install for the future. Thought he did a good job. I did a few things a little different, but for the most part this was a very useful video out of all the others specific to Pioneer. I installed one 18k BTU in my double garage because I live in Southwest Louisiana where it’s 97f in August with 90% humidity and I thought that I would need to run it at 74f from 12-4pm to suppress the Heat & Humidity, but 78f is plenty and I’m hot natured! Turbo Mode will really get the temp down quickly if needed. The Pioneer’s are also super quiet on both the indoor unit and outdoor condenser. Only thing I would do over is NOT install one in July! Haha

I think you did a terrific job sir and as you mention one needs to do their home work handling electricity ⚡️ you need to have knowledge as to the handling of it for your safety , refrigerant needs special attention as well one needs to have their EPA license to handle it so it’s not released in the atmosphere for the damage to the ozone layer , other wise kudos to you sir also I think that if one has the knowledge and the responsibility as you have Exercised it’s not a mystery but self discipline and meticulous attention to detail as you did show very nice and more power to you .

This is pretty good and shows the whole process of installing a mini split. But I think there should be more emphasis put on the flared connections and the evacuating the line set/evaporator or head unit. The vacuums needed to get close to removing molecules that don’t condense like oxygen and nitrogen, should not be taken too lightly. It’s the basis of the science of refridgeration. If you’re using other than a micron gauge, it is kind of like measuring small distances (like feet) with a car odometer rather than a ruler. So having a micron gauge and a vacuum pump that is capable of 500 or less is critical to the longevity of the compressor and the efficiency of the unit. The flared connections are also critical. They need to be torqued. If not, the small increments in vacuum values that result from a less that good seal, become a problem .......with an incorrectly torqued connection. Just tightening to “feels good” just does not get you to where you need to be. But I guess at the end of the day, if your expectations are replacing it in 5-8 years and you’re not too concerned you’re only getting 50-80% of the systems capability....then. These little units are capable of delivering some pretty advanced and economical performance. They're not window or god forbid portable a/c units!

Mini splits are much different than a traditional split system. You will need a vacuum pump gauges with low loss fittings, welding torch, nitrogen purge, you'll have to install an evap coil on the furnace and reconfigure plenum and ducts. Keep in mind your ducts will need larger capacity than may be installed if you have a heat only system, also ducts must be insulated to ensure no condensation on the bare metal. Welding you can also dmg components be sure to put wet rags on the piping to prevent heat getting to the sensing bulb on the indoor coil and the valves on the condenser failing to do so and overheating can cause bulb and valve failure. Releasing the refrigerant and working on the hoses can be very dangerous, handling this without proper license can result in 20k fines if you get caught, keep in mind you cant even buy refrigerant without it, most 410 condensers come with enough for 15 feet of lines anything over that will need more added. It really isnt a diy type of thing but if you have a mechanical background and dont value your time very much you can get it done. By the time you buy everything and factor in your wasted time you could spend making money doing whatever it Is you do. Anything can be done yourself just a question of how much you value your time and also do you actually think you can do a professional job from watching a few videos? I'd love to watch you attempt it. Let us know how it goes

Nice job, but your communication wire that you modified the cable cover on, actually comes up through the bottom of the connection, there is a clamp( 2-3 Phillip screws) that you can back off and harness your wires in place, anyone watching just notice the screws as he is putting his cover back on. Around the 12:25 mark.Cheers

Great video, thanks! I had a Mitsubishi installed, which I later added a WIFI module to that connects to a dedicated electrical port. That allows me to control my unit remotely. I use this on a cabin and turn on the A/C before traveling up to there. My lineset is about 35 feet, which runs through an attic crawlspace then down to the soffit to get outside... not something I wanted to do myself. He had to solder the lines to get enough length. Anyway, I'm impressed and grateful for the video!

I got this same unit after your video. My unit won't pressurize like yours did at all. When I close my low side, it just drops to 0. Seems like I have a leak somewhere, but I have no idea where on those connections it's leaking. I reconnected them 4 times tonight alone and added plenty of nylog with it each time. No dice. Now I'm messaging Senville to get help. I'm so beyond frustrated. A local HVAC guy quoted me saying he wanted $750 to fix it from this point.

Nobody, thus far, after watching 7 videos, have stated that one can "borrow" the vacuum and AC gauges from an auto parts store. -- you just leave $150 deposit and you get it back once you return the item(s). The only thing left to buy is the flange set, and the gauge adapter. It's always best to not have extra length on the pipes, and God forbid you coil them in the vertical plane!
