My wife asked for Central Air conditioning for our house. When I got the quote, I almost chocked. $30K. My older home just was not setup for adding Central Air and needed so may expensive modifications that so I started looking for options. My third and best option turned out to be adding 2 Mini splits. This is not a do it yourself type of job. I got them installed and found a pleasant surprise I didn't expect.
Correction: Cost for the 2 units was $8650, not $5650

If I may suggest, use induction cooke tops. They heat only the food. So the kitchen will not be hot for your wife. Also infra red ovens are more efficent than NG. As for split ac they have been around here in Egypt in my home since 20 years ago. Best regards from Egypt.

I did buy a small induction cooktop but my wife didn’t like it. She is used to looking at the flames to judge how hot the burner is and is not comfortable with electric controls. Thanks for your suggestions.

Hi, always interested in what others are doing. We have a 3 bed 4 bath with gabled ceiling great room on the island of Phuket, Thailand, so no heating needed. We also have a full sized pool and well pump, so about a 1100 kw a month. We're retired, so there a lot. No plans for an Ev. We have mini split AC in the great room and all 3 bedrooms, normally only one is running at a time and we close doors to confine the AC in the great room. We do have one inverter type AC in the Great room, a 20,000 BTU unit, does the job. Being in the tropics it made sense to add solar which we did in May 2022. Batteries are not necessary because any excess solar is added back to the grid at full credit. We used a company to install the 14, 540 watt Longi panels with a 10,000 KW string inverter, in case of expansion. The 7500 kw system runs the whole house, pool, 2 refrigerators, we'll pump, and all lighting inside and out. In fact, we have to watch the solar output daily to keep the electric meter positive. Our electric bills in USD are less than $50 a month. Since no batteries are needed and we are grid tied, the whole system cost $6000 USD with payback of 3-4 years. Couldn't be happier.

Great video contemplating this myself vs the central air. Also waiting on Tesla Solar order. The Y has been great except for the occasional flats and tire wear. Thanks Luis 👍

Friend installed one in Michigan, worked GREAT this summer while visiting! Anxious to see how it works for him this winter, he mentioned the same thing regarding below zero temperatures… Great work, look forward to your update next summer! 😁👊🏼👍🏼

Nice video, Ron. We live in Central MN where the winters can be pretty cold. We have 2 mini-splits mainly for cooling but the ones we chose will give heat down to -19ºF. So, if you are willing to spend the money you can successfully get heat out of the most efficient heat pumps even when it is pretty cold outside. Love your channel, we also have 10K of solar and just bought a Tesla. We are following in your footsteps! Cheers!

Did all this help the heat in the kitchen?

I won’t really know until next summer. However I think it will as the AC is bigger and the fan more powerful. I can also run it during supper as they use less energy.

Good video Ron, I noticed a while back on a few RV websites and in RU-vid videos where people were putting mini splits in and running off of their battery Bank powered by solar. Of course you can't do that with a roof air conditioner but they were able to do as mini splits because of the easy startup and the low power consumption.

Yes it can be done. A lot of work to make it look good.
