Miniature stage lights! They really work

This week I'm playing with some 3D printable 1/12 scale stage lights and a few different options for LEDs to light them up.
These aren't entirely practical, but they are super cool (especially for someone like me who used to work with the real thing)
This is the LEDs I used:
WS2812 LED

1 watt "star" LED

And here are the various 3D print files I showed at the end of the video:

This isn't the only way to do it.
It's probably not the best way to do it.
But it's how I do it.

As a call back to your starting roots, a disco show of trains and these lights would be pretty cool.

Those lights are so cool. It also looks like you have your 3d printer dialed in pretty nicely. They look really cool.

The only problem is cooling, those LED modules were intended to be mounted onto a heatsink, the notches are for the mounting screws. If you keep the power down, your probably safe, although pushing a 3W and above will probably give you a meltdown.

With the way this light functions, it should be modeled after a fresnel or even an R2D2(i.e. Parcan). Leko's(this style) typically has several lense's in front of the lamp and are more of a spotlight(much more control of the beam) rather than just a flood.

Of course. I just don't happen to have a bunch of 12mm lenses handy.

If you do and feel like it, perhaps a short disco dance with the spider kit?

Very cool! Wonder if we could find some small lenses and focus the beams?

Wow, that was killer kewl! :-) You know what's funny I printed a few of them a while back like a couple years ago to make a diorama for my kiss action figures and do a whole stage with lights and everything. I never did finish it because I never did get the all the LEDs for them. But I still have everything else. I do have the neopixels for the steps that goes up each side of the drum set. :-) I just need a motivation to get back into it! :-)

You definitely need to make a little 1/12 scale Stonehenge to light up on your little stage.

Use the 3W ones at 1W, much more light output because of the lower current in the larger die, so actually better overall. Will say the cheap ones do definitely suffer from lumen degradation, I am running some as low level lighting, at 50mA, and after 2 years they are pretty dim, time to pop off the old one and replace with another off the sheet of 25.

If you're into stage lighting it would be easy to use a ATTINY controller connected to the Neopixels to convert a DMX stream from a lighting controller and make a 12th scale stage replica to practice your lighting patterns on your actual lighting board. These are really nice models too.
@pileofstuff
@pileofstuff 2 года назад
I thought about that. It would need an ATTINY and a MAX485 to interface the DMX (RS485). I'm not convinced there is enough room in the back of the light for those and a PCB to hold them.

For the smaller scales a resin printer is going to give more detailed looking results, though it is a bit more messy to do the cleaning and curing.

a bunch of them would need a central midi control ... several lengths each with a led controller

on the ws2812 what is the value of the resistor? Mine had a 75 ohm which was causing a string of 60 to glitch like mad. Will be very interesting to see your value. I see the add had 75ohm!
@pileofstuff
@pileofstuff 2 года назад
In this case, I didn't use any resistor on the data line. Usually, when I remember, I'll put in somewhere between 500 and 1K - whatever I happen to grab. In my experience it's not too picky.
@TheEmbeddedHobbyist
@TheEmbeddedHobbyist 2 года назад
@@pileofstuff sorry I don't think I described it correctly, if you look on the ws2812b pcb you will see a cap and a resistor. On mine the resistor was 75 ohms and its in series with the 5v pin and vcc of the led. This means that the vcc of lthe ed changes with the current it pulls. Which also means that Dout voltage level changes and can rail to be recognised by the next led. See my video's on ring glitch. Drove me mad, so I saw you had the same type of led board and wondered if you would have the same issues. The web list sho!ws a 75 ohm resistor so maybe my boards circuit was incorrect? Check the math 20mA per led max, 3 leds, and 75 ohm series resistor. What's the voltage drop across the resistor with just 1 led at full brightness?

So that chip is exactly the same as what's in the Neopixel and you can hook an RGB LED to it ? don't know how I missed that could I have the part number please ?...cheers.

The chip is WS2811. And for what they do, they're pretty cheap: pileofstuff.ca/r/r9bhj
