Jean-Baptiste Augustin
Lady with an Arrow, c.1794
.
.
.
Jean-Baptiste Augustin created this miniature in the middle of the French Revolution. However, the lady is carelessly dressed and armed with a bow and an arrow in her hands. Amazingly, she has captured a butterfly on top of her naked breast
Today, it might be difficult to understand the significance of this exceptional representation; but most certainly, it was understood by the lady’s lover, who was the original owner of the miniature.
Arrow and bow are associated with Cupid, the antique god of love. The captured butterfly probably symbolizes the lady herself. She is fallen in love and has lost her freedom.
