This miniature of an unknown young boy is a striking example of Jean-Jacques Isabey’s talent for depicting female models and children in a graceful and sensitive manner.
The artist captured the boy’s childlike tenderness with great sensitivity. Gentle contours and shadows make the boy’s face appear soft and delicate.
The dark brown background even reinforces this effect. But it also lets the boy appear independent, in his own children’s world
Skill, grace and finesse in the physiognomies of his portraits made Isabey to one of the leading Paris miniaturists of his time.
