Hi Jaclyn I enjoyed your vide very much, thank you! I had an idea about the water issue: How about cutting a hole into the upper left hand corner of the board, measuring the diameter of the collapsible cup about 1 cm before it is at its largest before the top? That way you could unfold your cup, slip it into the hole and fill in the water. And the container would safely stay in place 😊

You have enough room on your Plein Air board for small Double Stainless Steel Dipper Container Cup Pots Water Paint Palette Clip - with Lid. I got mine from Amazon. I made up a very similar art board as you made and I have enough room for my paint palette, water pots with lids with a clip and room for a small journal or paper. Also, I do have the Swedish clothes that you mentioned, but another hack that I learnt from someone else on RU-vid, is to purchase cheap Terry cloth sweat wrist bands, put on on your non-dormant wrist, and use this to wipe your brush on instead of a cloth. This gives you more room on your board and is easy to use. I use black ones so you can’t see the paint marks. When you get to your room, or home you can wash them clean and they dry quickly for your next Plein Air experience….This was a great video, well done 👍🏼 can’t wait to see your videos of painting on your holiday. Hope you have a great time. 😊🤗🇨🇦

Yes, I use those double clip-on water pots, too. With the lids you can put water in them before you go out. Also, the Art-Toolkit palette can be adhered just off the side of your board with 2 magnetic clips. I made my coroplast support board to fold in half by using white duct tape for the hinge. When it is open on my lap I put the water pot clips over the fold part to hold it open. Works a treat! I love looking at people’s plein air/travel setups and getting ideas.
@jaclynbaerart
@jaclynbaerart Год назад
I like the idea of having water in it already and then putting the cap back on so you pack out your water too! Great ideas! I hadn't thought of making a fold in half set up. That would make it even more compact to put in my bag. Wow such a great idea - thank you so much Arlene!!!

Just watched your video and like the idea of using the correlated plastic to clip your pallet to. I prefer painting in the travel journals but occasionally paint on paper cut to small size. I most often carry my water in a urine specimen bottle, believe it or not. Never leaks! Also, rather than paper towels, I have an old facecloth that I cut in half. It is rather colourful now with paint as I have used it for several years. Interesting what you can find if you need to scratch into the surface to create grasses or whatever. When in South Africa, I found a porcupine quill and it is still a treasure. Our kit is very similar. Enjoy your upcoming and future painting adventures!

Wow I love all your tips! Using an old facecloth is a great one to not use paper towels. I try not to use paper towels, but the one I have in my kit is a backup that's been in there for a while. lol. I love your setup and your attention to detail! I also love your room and organization! You have a great style. I have just recently discovered stablo. It’s a setup for plein air painters. I love it because I can set my sketchbook with it and setup my paint palette and water with it. It has a place for a water cup and brushes. I ordered a small double water container that clips to my sketchbook. It’s awesome because it has lids to cover them that don’t leak. The top of it is magnetic and so my art toolkit and other palettes stick to it. It’s a bit pricey but I felt it was worth it for my specific needs. I’m excited to see more videos from you ~ especially watercolor. I don’t use gouache because it just doesn’t have the magic watercolor does. Thank you for sharing your setup! I use artist tape and it works great!

Ooohhhh I just looked up sablo and it's awesome! I'm so glad you have that! I love that it's magnetic so the art toolkit palette can stick to it. Although, once I set it down next to me on a bench to grab something out of my bag, and a big gust of wind came and blew it off! 😝 So I've learned not to do that again! Thanks for the comment!

@markdonovan1540
@markdonovan1540 Год назад
Excellent set up, I like using those type of bags too. It's a way of not taking too much stuff and it's comfortable to wear around the waist or even sling over the shoulder when cycling somewhere. I usually take a small homemade pallete that has 3 primaries, a convenience earth colour, white gouache or opaque white watercolour (for highlights) and a grey or neutral tint. I only take a small A6 sketchbook, one with 100% cotton paper, and a couple of bulldog clips or just elastic bands, with washi tape for borders. I don't take a board though, because it doesn't fit in the small bag. Mind you, I'm not painting in the desert! I usually paint while in a cafetería or outside on the terrace in the street or in parks. (I live in Madrid, Spain).
@jaclynbaerart
@jaclynbaerart Год назад
Yes, I used to overdo it and take too much when I'd go out in the field to paint. Now I just bring the essentials! Love that you sling it over the shoulder while you cycle! I love using white gouache and my grey/neutral tint too. That's a great minimal color palette! Sometimes I'll do a warm and cool tone of the primaries along with the same three you said too. I haven't found a sketchbook I like to bring with me, so I use pieces of 100% cotton paper and clip them down to my board. What sketchbook do you like to use? That's so cool to paint in a cafeteria/outdoors in Madrid! How wonderful! I haven't been to Spain before, but I've been to a handful of countries around you :)

@@jaclynbaerart I've used a few different sketchbooks, or small "ring bound" pads, but I recently bought a 4.7"x6.2", 140lb, 100% cotton, hot-press Baohong bound sketchbook. I don't usually use HP paper, but my idea with one is to try and paint more loosely and combine some ink sketching with watercolour. I've started you it yet, but I will do soon.

Lovely video! 😊 Here’s an idea for the water cup….You could cut a hole in your art board - just big enough so the cup fits in it….Or attach magnets so you could move it around if need be….OR cut a smaller piece of the plastic with a hole in it and you could clip that to your board….

Nice video. Thanks. As your water cup is tapered, perhaps you could cut a hole in the plastic board and slip the cup into it. It would then catch the cup where it gets wider. Not sure I'm explaining this well but you're basically creating a cup holder. You could also keep the piece you cut out and tape it back in place with 3M blue painters tape which is less tacky than regular tape. Just a thought.
@jaclynbaerart
@jaclynbaerart Год назад
Yes! That makes sense! A few others have suggested this too and I love this idea! Plus it's free because it's only just cutting the board to fit the water cup! Thank you!

10:56 if that's a disktrasa (like a very thin sponge), it should be washable (by hand or washing machine at 60°C) - watercolor and gouache buildup should wash out just fine, other than the staining from the more stubborn pigments. I'm definitely team magnet - tiny neodymium magnets are crazy strong and weigh basically nothing, and they're quite inexpensive these days too! I'm not sure what type of glue would work best on silicone though... you could just place a loose magnet inside the cup every time you take it out to use it, but personally I would 1000% lose that magnet within, like, 12-24 hours of first use.
@jaclynbaerart
@jaclynbaerart Год назад
Yeah, just a swedish towel that I cut in half. I'd put it in the wash but I used acrylic gouache on it and afraid of that getting stuck in the pipes. But a towel with just watercolor bits on it would definitely be fine in the wash! So I'm thinking I'll use the other half and wash it when it gets too dirty. Or another person commented to use an athletic wrist band so it would save space on my art board and I can put it in the wash too! Great ideas!! And yes, I could see myself losing the magnet if I kept it loose too! 😝 So I'd probably need to adhere it somehow and test that out!
