My eldest daughter told me this is called the description box, not the "comment box thingie" Haha! Guess my OLD is showing.
Also, I definitely meant SKATE egg cases [at the nature table] not skeet egg cases. Let's pretend I have an accent that caused me to say it wrong...
Here are some things I talked about in the video in case you wanted to check them out for yourself.

Thank you! This is really opening my eyes to the fact that we have way too much stuff! We with one child probably have 3 x as many books and art supplies and "stuff" as you have for your 3 plus you! I see that less is more and our over abundance of books and things and supplies are a hindrance instead of a help. Thank you! You are my new HS mom to model after.

... Hmm I don't think you can ever have "too many" books or art supplies.

Just found your channel and can't wait to watch some of your others! I love finding laid back artistic homeschoolers - youtube needs more of them :) I know you said you don't own the furniture but that homeschooling cabinet with all of the art supplies is so nice - might set something up like that myself - thanks for the inspiration

I have total minimalist envy, LOL, if that can even be a thing! I have such a hard time keeping tabs on all of the stuff, especially school-related. I love how pared down to basics everything is. And LOVE the kitchen situation, thanks for keeping it real. #momlife Again, these videos are just so inspiring.

Oh my goodness!! I loved this video. My child is almost 4 so I'm overloading my mind with everything homeschool related for when we start. I'm guessing you blend waldorf with charlotte mason? I'm leaning towards a montessori and charlotte mason blend. Your space is beautiful and you gave me some more books to add to my list. Well actually I'm going to have to watch this one again because my hands were covered in dough (making bagels) and i wasn't able to write anything down. lol Thank you!
@SaltyTribeCo
@SaltyTribeCo 7 лет назад
Haha! Well I'm glad you enjoyed it and how FUN making bagels! We blend waldorf, montessori, charlotte mason and classical types of education. We blend it all together and then get rid of any excess so that it fits our minimalist style. I'm glad this was helpful! Thank you for commenting!

I'm enjoying your channel. I love how eclectic your learning/teaching methods are. I love Waldorf method, but have been hesitant on collecting any of the books. I assumed it was more spiritual/pagan style. Thanks for mentioning about All Year Round. I haven't gone through all your videos, but hoping there's one on your books and curriculum books :) Also do you teach creationism and have any good books on it? Thanks!

I am really enjoying your channel! I was wondering if you apply minimalism to your calendar and schedule? Do your children participate in a lot of extracurricular activities?
@SaltyTribeCo
@SaltyTribeCo 7 лет назад
Hey! No, we don't participate in many extracurriculars. We used to and I was pretty burnt out. Honestly I felt pretty guilty. They're allowed to pick one sport if they want. We live on an island so my eldest surfs, actually they all do including me but my eldest does it as her sport for school. My middle kiddo, daughter, wants to get back into figure skating. We plan on stopping by the rink on the mainland to see if it will fit our stress free schedule. They do offer early morning ice time which would REALLY work for us [light traffic, back before we typically do school, I still get a quiet morning...all good!] My youngest kid did baseball once. He was 4 and I wasn't sure I would survive the season. SO many practices and games. For FOUR year olds. Nope. I told the kids they can't play soccer. Hahaha! They go to youth group but that is walking/biking distance. We don't do American Heritage Girls anymore because it's a long drive to the closest troop. I streamline our daily schedule which I will be posting next week! I hope that helped. I feel like I totally rambled.

You talked about putting notebooking pages into a book with Proclick. How do you decide what to keep? And for how long?
@SaltyTribeCo
@SaltyTribeCo 7 лет назад
Hey! I contacted proclick to make sure that the laminated pages would fit and they said they would...they were wrong. Let the wind out of my sails. So we have them in 3 hole binders [there's a video of the portfolios on my channel]. At the end of this school year I will take them to get spiral bound since I don't want to try purchasing another punch thing. The kids choose! For the most part anyway. I choose their writing samples and they keep some of their favorite art pieces. These are books for them to keep forever [or whenever they're adults and don't want to look at them anymore?] lol! The other ways of doing this are : Composition books or Waldorf Main Lesson Books. There's not laminating and it's super simple. The only reason we started laminating was because we use chalk, pastels, and paints. We wanted to preserve them. Hope that helped!

I have been very interested in American Heritage Girls but the closest troop is like an hour and a half away. Do you still do AHG? and how does it work with just your little tribe???? I just am sorta terrified to try and start one up on my own. ack!
@SaltyTribeCo
@SaltyTribeCo 7 лет назад
We love doing it with just ourselves though I totally miss them being IN a troop to do all the activities. By yourself is fun for earning badges. The troop is great for growing friendships, camping and other activities. I don't want to start one. I'm like you ACK! It's a LOT of work and I'm already overloaded. I'm hoping someone starts one nearby. I might just drive them the 45 minutes to the closes troop. "insert UGH face" I just love everything that AHG stands for!

My second comment lol...I SO wish I could find a curriculum that was nature based AND Christian. I love Waldorf but they tend to be spiritual in a non-Christian way if that makes sense. There is so much beauty in God's creation I always want to include it in my children's education. 😊 Thank you for sharing your resources!
@SaltyTribeCo
@SaltyTribeCo 7 лет назад
That is SO me. I totally get that. I LOVE the waldorf feel and method, but want our focus to be God and His amazing creation. How He has weaved everything together. Glad to have ya with us, Autumn!

SaltyTribeCo Amen sister! ❤️ We are using My Fathers World this year and have found a nice happy medium in it. We are also trying Tinkergarten this year...you may like it too. Just using it for Kindergarten so we will see as she gets older. My 8th grader is using Classical Conversations and while I LOVE it it's definitely not nature based! Lol

Autumn L.- Seasonal Living The Good & The Beautiful has a fantastic nature journal that is Christ based. The primary author is LDS but the curriculum focuses on Christ/God not doctrine.

Thank you! How did you discover and work Witt your daughter on dyslexia? My oldest is about six and showing some signs of possible dyslexia. I'd love to hear more about your experience!
@SaltyTribeCo
@SaltyTribeCo 6 лет назад
It wasn't too long after we started homeschooling. My husband is severely dyslexic and so he was the first to let know that that might be the issue I was having with teaching her to read. I am planning a video and blog post on all the info I have gathered, our experience and what we are using. I am currently recovering from surgery and illness so hopefully soon I'll be back at it!
@rebeccagonzalez3970
@rebeccagonzalez3970 7 лет назад
do you follow a curriculum? we do Charlotte Mason and our set up looks very similar
@SaltyTribeCo
@SaltyTribeCo 7 лет назад
Hey! No, we do not follow a curriculum. The only thing that is Charlotte Mason-y that we do is copywork, lots of books, and nature study. When we followed full Charlotte Mason, the kids didn't enjoy the book selections [most of them] and the several subjects with short lessons, wasn't a good fit for us. So we kind of mix Waldorf, Montessori, Charlotte Mason, Classical. We do all of that with a child-led and unschooling feel. If we purchase a curriculum it's more to be used as a reference guide versus used as written. I don't know if any of that made sense. Haha! We mostly just create an environment of learning that exists without a schedule. The topics we cover are all picked by my children. My younger daughter just told me she wants to learn to write well. So I'm looking for a few more resources for her to use as guides. Everything we do as far as what to study is chosen by my kids.

@denisegraber877 7 лет назад
When you used TT, did you use the big workbooks or did you have your children write out on paper? Thanks!!
@SaltyTribeCo
@SaltyTribeCo 7 лет назад
We only got the big book once. For some reason I thought it was additional problems for the lesson, not the exact same problems from the disk. After that we just got the disks and used 1/4" to 1/2" graph paper booklets or paper for them to work their math on. It is MUCH easier to work math problems out on the graph paper. It keeps the place values nicely!
@denisegraber877

Thank you! We've done it with a plain notebook as well as the big workbook. I think we'll try the graph paper next year! Thanks again- and many blessings to y'all!

SaltyTribeCo thanks. I hate it says there can't be a troop within 60 minutes of you. We have about 45 minutes away but it's hard going back and forth that long after a long school day. Oh well.
@SaltyTribeCo
@SaltyTribeCo 7 лет назад
Ours is technically within the 60 minutes. It's about 40-45 minutes though if there's traffic it would take longer. I still wrote in applied letting them know that it just wasn't feasible for us to get to and from a troop that far away. Especially since we rarely go into town. Maybe every few months or so. I was still accepted!

Do you recommend those Nature Portfolios? I've almost bought them three times!
@SaltyTribeCo
@SaltyTribeCo 7 лет назад
Hey! I like them. My kids really like them. I prefer two other methods : 1. Painting/drawing on cardstock paper and laminating them for their books. 2. A spiral 5x7 sketchbook [with multimedia paper] to draw and write what we see though the seasons. That's just my personality though. My kids enjoy workbook type stuff which we do not do often. But they also enjoy the more out of the box type of thing that I described. I think they enjoy having the pretty binders that they got to fill in and color. They're excited to finish it and have it be complete. If you and your kids enjoy a relaxed type of workbook [cut, paste, color, write, notebooking] then you'll love it. If you prefer to do your own thing and feel confined by boxes, then you won't love it as much. Hope that helped!
@jenniferhauser2123
@jenniferhauser2123 7 лет назад

Wonderful! LOVES!! Also, 2 things.. when it's convenient for you. 1.) Please don't apologize for the length of your vids.. though I know I'm not the spokes person for all SAHM's.. I have a feeling that most SAHM's whom may be longing for some adult interaction from time to time- such as myself.. truly, seriously do not have any issue w/ the time you take to share. Infact, I'm thinking that most of us seriously appreciate it... 2.) the other thing- I suspect that most of your viewers are most likely mothers- so with that said.. we more than anyone on the planet- most likely understand.. that you will get back to us- Q's & comments.. ASAP.. presh kiddos & hubbies.. family.. friends.. real life.. should always come first.. and any "normal" viewer should get that.. Jane!! truly, greatly appreciate all you take time to share.. TY!! So, you only use the math from the earthschooling site, not the complete curriculum? I hadn't heard of that before, I'm going to have to look into it. I like some elements of waldorf, but some of it didn't seem like it could coexist with my Christian beliefs. Do you find anything in the earthschooling that would be a huge problem for a Christ-follower?
@SaltyTribeCo
@SaltyTribeCo 7 лет назад
Great questions! I also struggled with wanting to use Waldorf materials while being Christ followers. I haven't had any issues with the Earthschooling math, but I wasn't sure about everything else and I didn't want to spend a lot of money on it only to find that it conflicted with our worldview. I do love that individual elements can be purchased from Christopherus and from Earthschooling. We don't use the full curriculum and I have only used the math, and there aren't any issues from a faith standpoint. The only issue I have is that it's not all laid out in a traditional sense. But since we are pretty relaxed with our homeschool, it hasn't been too hard to adjust. It was just a bit of a learning curve. Hope that helps!
