Nice plane! Nice Landing! I had a 70 year old instructor with 13,000 hours and he taught me to dead stick every landing. He said if you don't know how to dead stick a landing you have no business flying an airplane. It always cracked me up watching all these pilots come in way to hot and wondering why they were bouncing all over the place...

🎯ditto, my instructor was always chopping the throttle to idle "where are you going to land?" We were in a quicksilve, he was a great cfi. Sometimes later in my very lsa, I deadstick. I remember the noticeable ifference between an idling prop vs stopped

That's a very nice instrument panel on a Minimax, far above most of the ones you see. I've never seen a runway with a displaced threshold so far from the end of the pavement. Apparently the present airport owners don't want to maintain the entire length of that long runway.

Incredible, a decent jogging pace is faster than its landing speed. Is this aircraft good for stol/bush flying?
@JessHull

I would say given its low wing design and small landing gear, it probably wouldn't make an ideal bush/stol type aircraft.

Yes. I did lot of changings to achieve such characteristics. Streamlined struts and wheel axle, as possible shaped engine cowling, enclosed cockpit (very comfortable, but You should not forget about ventilation inside it). Also increased wingtips, 1foot each. CG close to tailheavy. I also didn't expect such result.

These guys slay me, when they turn off their engines in flight and glide back to the runway. over 30 Years of flying, GA and Experiment Amateur Built planes I, personally, have NEVER turned off my engine in flight. There's this addage that s..t happens, and usually at the worst time.
@dickjohnson4268
@dickjohnson4268 5 лет назад
Hey.... I know! Lets set a can of avgas on fire in the cockpit to simulate a fire emergency. Splash a little on yourself just for effect... THEN land the plane. Or, torch the wiring under the shield. That way you could learn how to handle smoke in the cockpit. Even better; attach your prop with explosive bolts to simulate prop separation. Or use 'em for wing bolts on your King Airs. Don't listen to us high-timers. Experience it for yourselves. If you live long enough. FATE IS THE HUNTER.
@entelin
@entelin 5 лет назад
@@dickjohnson4268 An engine out in a plane with a low stall speed and a two stroke engine shouldn't even be cause for a heart rate increase. An ultralight engine *will* fail on you, especially two stroke engines, it's just a matter of time. You look at paramotor pilots and they have multiple engine outs a year often times. But it's not an issue because you know this already and you would be a fool for flying over anywhere you can't land with reasonable safety. So the engine fails, you land, it's inconvenient, but whatever. As a hangglider pilot damn near every time I fly I land in some random field haha, there are plenty of options most places. A king air though?... that would be cause for some serious concern.
@entelin
@entelin 5 лет назад
If you turn your engine off then it can't fail on you! It's kind of like prevention really :D
@dickjohnson4268
@dickjohnson4268 5 лет назад
@@entelin We watched a paramotor operator bounce off a large water tower during a football game at the high school. It's all fun until someone gets hurt... then it's friggin hilarious. He almost walked away. Our field has a lot of gyro copter and LSA pilots around. Great bunch. Two stroke are the most widely used power plants in this bunch with no failures. Mostly due to preventive maintenance constantly being done. The same goes for our motocrosser fleet. Again, go ahead, tempt fate. Or, you can just set the power at zero thrust. The FAA does watch these videos. Several fields around here will ban you if the airport manager sees anyone do these stunts. However, a Grob G 109 is a blast to sail with the engine shut down and the prop feathered. But alas, that is what it is designed for. Still, land off-field somewhere and cause damage, you'll just love the results. Combine operators get really ugly when part of a wing and cables get caught in the pickup during peak harvest.
@entelin
@entelin 5 лет назад
@@dickjohnson4268 I have to ask, what was he doing that caused him to fly into a water tower? >_< I mean, I guess I have to agree that doing this at a public airport is pretty needless. Another aircraft off radio failing to see you could show up at the wrong time and cause you to get into a situation where you are then forced to land simultaneously or something. Wildlife on the runway even, it happens.

4-15k depending on what ultralight you get, if you buy new or used, pre-built or build it yourself. The Minimax 11oor is about 7k for the home build kit, Then another 2-3k for instruments, engine and paint.

I don't see problems in minimax capabilities and Your antropometric data! If it is necessary, You can make appr. 2'' wider fuselage, (in my drawings it is 24'', in other vers. 22''). Yes, You can't consume so economically 4*4ft plywood sheet in fuselage top & bottom. I am almost 6.5 ', so I made fuselage sides 2'' higher and 2'' longer front part, to have enough space for legs. Rear turtledeck is also higher, but I don't know what is ''standart'', I made it for myself. Wideness 24'' is little for much for me, I made in seat back ''side holders'' ala Recaro (You can see in ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3r8ANxLc1xM.html at5:16. to feel the plane better. Payload is great for original wings, with 50hp engine You can get climb 6-700 ft/min sure. Little changings, and no problems. In our country so small changings are acceptable, I don't know about Yours. (MTOW etc.)

roadstar499 Hey, I’m 6’and was 265 (actually 280 ish at my heaviest) and dropped down to 195 in less time than it takes to build most kits! I’m back to 220 ish now because I never quite liked being under 200, but it’s entirely possible and it all adds up to better performance from your plane even if it’ll fly well enough anyway

You needed to take the opportunity to practice side slips. That will lose altitude very quickly and will be the only way u will make a short field with too much height. The S turns you did won't get u into a short field and not everywhere has a nice runway like that one.

It was a very BAD BAD landing zig zaging around to lose altitude occupying the airspace. The pilot should have side fall to lose altitude in seconds and line up the plane for landing. If I had been for an instructor this pilot would have failed.
@arvilsbusmanis1215
@arvilsbusmanis1215 5 лет назад
Thank You! It was the first time engine off landing with this plane. In flight manual is written, the glide ratio is appr. 6/1, very steep, to compare to other planes, You have flown. Yes, I made some lot of changings in construction, to reduce drag, but I didn't expect so good gliding characteristics! In the begining I tried to do that, but stopped, because I didn't want to spoil that feeling of gliding. We are just 2 planes in that airfield, the another one was in hangar, so there is no tigth trafic. In other conditions I never switch off the engine.

I don't think canada painter that I would take much notice of somebody who doesn't know the correct term for a sideslip. I have landed a Minimax engine out for real. It is challenging. Given the need to practice a glide approach, because these aircraft lose airspeed fast without power, attitude control is a must and with the drag line below the thrust line to such an extent as you find on a 'Max, the only way to check it is to turn the motor off with both plenty of height and plenty of runway especially if there have been substantial aerodynamic modifications. A 10:1 glide ratio is remarkable for a 'Max and if you don't find out until you have to, you will be into the trees at the end at 50 MPH . Nice landing, Sir, from a Minimax pilot (G-BZOR.)
