The Minneapolis Moline ZTS restoration project was a little slow going today, but we did dabble a little with the electrolysis process and began taking off the rear platform. I say we, "began", because we hit two big sticking points that will need more time with penetrating oil and probably more heat!

The reason I've been watching is to watch the restoration of the ZTS. I have finished a complete ground up restoration of ZTN. My next project is a 37 ZTU. Keep up the good work.

I've never even heard of that. It's coming along. I look forward to watching the progress.

Years ago, I used a similar setup to strip the rust and paint off of some tractor parts we rebuilt. If I'm remembering correctly, it took days to completely remove all the paint and rust, then I'd use a wire brush on an angle grinder. I don't know if it matters, but the setup I used was a plastic barrel with the sacrificial anode lining the barrel so that it surrounded the parts being stripped.

That's a great tip on how you set up the barrel! I think we need to do a better job getting the sacrificial parts lining around the outside. We may see a bit of a difference then. We did leave a couple pieces in longer this week, so it will be neat to see how they turn out.

I'm not sure that electrolysis will remove paint, but it certainly removes rust. I suppose if there's a little rust under the paint it would pop that off. It does take a while though (day(s)). I've used it to clean up the insides of rusty gas tanks on motorcycles and small engines.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts/experiences. I think my son had just been leaving stuff in for a couple hours, so this week we left something in for around 36 hours. We haven't been able to see it yet, but it will be interesting to see how it turns out.
