JJ is part of the future definitely however is this team doesn't address the O Line and D line seriously in free agency as well as reflect on the past drafts, clean up the way they evaluate players going forward and find a play calling OC to focus on the game in order to free up KOC to lead this team as a dedicated HC cleaning up some of this in game mismanagement the QB position will be the least of our worries
It looks like Sam Darnold has a chance eventually to develop into something like another Jared Goff. However, it will take at least a couple more years with an offense and a coaching staff that is suited to his style, which is downfield gunslinger. Maybe he finds happiness with the Cowboys or Cleveland. From what we have seen so far, he's not a backup. He's an entertaining starter, with some limitations.
KOC has no short passing game plan, he has no idea how to burn clock if the run game is not working, it's why the Packers and the Jets almost came back, hell he was still running long developing routes with Josh doubs. It's just who he is as a play caller.
Exactly, if he had a short passing game section of the playbook, we would've seen it by now. And the screen game has improved with AJ, but it still sucks, and he doesn't use them very often.
Yea seems like he’s trying hard sometimes to be this “offensive genius” instead of just doing the simple things that work. I really hope someone on the staff is pushing him to create a short pass game, it’s a great proven tool to have in the box!
He has no feel of a complete offensive game plan start to finish. How to integrate run with pass is meh at best. Have never seen him do a jumbo run package . Everyone has noted he can’t/won’t develop any short of short, keep chains moving set of plays. Must be blind all his 3 and outs are exhausting his D😂
Darnold has been targeting the TEs a lot so let's hope that continues when we actually get a good one in there. It will change things for the better if that happens. If he doesn't keep targeting the TE, I'll tear somebody's hair out (as I have none of my own remaining)
4:55 The answer to that question, Dex, is no. O’Connell didn’t change his offense when we were on Josh Dobbs, Jaren Hall, or Nick Mullens. You think he’s gonna change it just because they lost Darrisaw? If he won’t do it for the starting QB, he won’t do it for the LT
I also think that is a solid point. But I'm guessing it will be far better than anyone thinks. TJ is like a human "scripted play" that Sam can just go to if he feels like no one is open.
@@oel734 lol, you were saying the same thing 2 games ago. I suppose you still think Mullen has what it takes? You sure are not talking up Darnold as much as you were 2 weeks ago 😂
How have yall not covered the trade? Lost me as the number one go to for sure but I still love yall. I just found out 8 hours after bcs I only sub to yall.
Why is Rouse a year away? Do Vikings position coaches know how to coach? Why is it we hardly ever have rookies step right in at low profile positions? Others teams manage to do it fairly well, so just think we need theses coaches to earn their keep.
Low profile? You don’t know anything about ball lol. Rouse was a 6th round pick, generally a throw away round that never contribute anything let alone step in to be the starting left tackle. Learn ball before talking nonsense…
@Trav4 yep, keep forgiving and pretend all is well. Everything is candy and rainbows.... settle for mediocrity and you'll NEVER be disappointed. Good luck pal.
You guys are acting like Darnold is complete trash and continues to dunk on him especially Judd when I think he’s been playing good . The man is literally learning a new system in year one with O’Connell. I took Kirk a whole year to learn the offense. McCarthy has played 0 snaps in the league they act like he’s gonna come in here next year and light it up like Daniels and Shroud did. JJ looked good in preseason but so did Caleb Williams and how has he looked this year. I hope JJ is a good QB for the team but I have no track record of him from college throwing the ball down the field long or intermediate. Don’t crown the kid like he’s going to be the messiah until we all see him play in games 1-17 and not one preseason game.
Come on Judd they won't beat the bears, they to Atlanta, Colts, AZ, GB here and Detroit there. Vikings will be lucky to finish 3rd but probably at last place. Good luck Vikings fans. I was one till I got. Eat down for the LAST time ever. Done with them. I'll e long gone before they win a SB. Maybe by 2040? Everyone forgets where we live and what Minnesota sports gave to to everyone here. Build you up throw you down. 60 years of punishment is enough for me to see the light. Commanders Texans or chiefs are my next team. Haven't decided yet but will be ordering new jersey next week. If I stayed with the Vikings I'd have to make a jersey with the name McHandoff on it...🤣🤣🤣
Not impressed with KOCs play calling in the 2nd and 3rd quarter the last 4 games. And what happened to the intermediate pass plays and no screen passes. Hopefully Hockensons return brings back that 6 to 10 yard pass attack. Plus, we have effed ourselves on ALL of the critical 3rd down penalties we take to allow drives to continue. NEED to clean things up and really have 3 winnable games coming up before we hit the NFC North buzzsaw.
The only way i'm even OPEN to the discussion of paying Darnold 30m+ per year is if he literally wins the Super Bowl. Way too many fans are so short-sighted when it comes to Darnold. He's a product of the KOC system. McCarthy can do the same thing, if not more, at a 1/5th of the price.
The Darnold glazing has been out of control since week 1. There’s nothing wrong with being excited about moving on to our young stud. We know what Darnold is. Low end starter who can be elevated to a mid level starter with a good offense and coaching staff, which is where he’s at now. JJ is a bona fide winner, younger, cheaper, more mobile and has a better arm. We have every right to be amped up for JJ, someone else will pay Sam a ridiculous amount and by mid season they’ll regret it.
@@Puma4986 "someone else will pay Sam a ridiculous amount and by mid season they’ll regret it." >>> It depends on what team that is. If it's a team like the Rams (provided Staff retires) or Dolphins, I think they can make it work.
It’s not that he’ll be “great,” it’s that at WORST he is a middle of the pack qb for Pennies on the dollar. If he’s REALLY good on the other hand, you have a crazy amount of cap to get KNOWN stars around him. Paying Kirk/darnold prevents this
They are going to run Brandel at T, Risner at LG, and then start fast tracking rouse at second team LT to see if if may be viable in a few games. Especially if Engrim keeps struggling
Na. Quessenberry is the most stable of the bunch. Agree on the rouse take tho. And brandel is arguably playing the best of the OL, to move him would be ludicrous. But After 2 losses, ingram could be replaced
@laserchiefwankoo204 they will not replace Ingram while LT is in flux. They could ride with quesenberry, but smart money is to stay youthful and not a 34yr old journeyman for blindside protection. With Hock back, could do more 12 personel and chip to reduce speed rushes
The Vikings need to adopt the song Raise Your Horns by Amon Amarth, the chorus portion.....been saying this for years.."raise your horns raise them up to the sky, we will drink too glory tonight, raise your horns for brave fallen freinds, we will meet where the beer never ends" along with that guitar riff....... if he got the whole crowd singing it that would be intimidating as all hell
These soft coaches will never let Sam stick around after this year. JJ is going to be pretty rough next year. No way KOC wants to hear the fans calling for the backup when things go south.
They won’t keep Sam because Sam hasn’t earned the right to be kept and he won’t, end of story 😂. How all of you deluded yourselves into thinking we’d pay another mid QB 40M+ after finally getting rid of Kirk I will never understand, but it wasn’t happening no matter how well Sam played. He was on a 1 year rental for a reason and he is already showing why. When someone shows you who they are for 6 fucking years, believe them. Follow Sam out the door if you love him that much, he’s gonna need extra fans on his new team.
JJ is a higher caliber QB than Sam Darnold. The reasons why is because JJ has abilities Sam doesnt have and you cannot coach. Its either you have it or you dont.
@@SincerelyJnC exactly 🫡 one of the biggest things is JJ can play off script. That’s what separates all of the top QBs from the mid ones. Mahomes, Allen, Lamar, Burrow, Stroud, even guys like Baker and Hurts, can all make plays happen like that. Sam can’t play off script because when he does that bad things happen. So when KOCs play doesn’t work it’s over. JJ will bring the whole offense to another level. I still can’t even think of what Sam did to earn this extreme and undying loyalty from Vikings fans. If I didn’t know any better and just went off what is said about him I would think he’s won us 8 super bowls and been here 15 years 🙄
@@Puma4986 yep. The one thing you must have (and this cannot be coach, its a god given skill) if you hope to have any chance at being an elite QB. The ability to play well and make good decisions under pressure. Physical and mental pressure. Off scripted. JJ McCarthy from his college tape has shown he has that ability. You add that to his personality, his natural leadership abilities. Guys gravitate towards him. Its not even close, JJ is in a different class compared to Darnold. People dont realize that the reason Darnold isn't doing as well now is because after enough weeks have gone by, teams now have enough game tape of Darnold to know how the Vikings are running their offense with him. That means now Darnold has to be the reason why the offense is still good and not just rely on KOC just blowing the defense away with his scheme. Darnold simply cannot get it done. Thats why the offense is struggling. But people want to blame KOC, whos the reason Darnold was even good to begin with. Theres only so much a coach can scheme. Sooner or later players have to make plays too.
Darnold has thrown very few intermediate passes due to KOCs scheme. It's a very small sample at this point. And the sacks are also partly due to long-developing plays.
I found this in an article recently : "Over the last two games Darnold has proven that he can be successful throwing underneath effectively. On passes under 10 yards, Darnold went 11-for-13 with 107 yards against the Rams and 14-for-15 for 68 yards vs. the Lions." >>> TJ being back will only improve this further.
At the draft party I attended everyone was saying " I hope the Vikings don't get JJ McCarthy". After the laughter finally died down from the Falcons taking Penix, you could hear a pin drop when the Vikings traded up. We all knew what was about to happen and we were sad.
With his new weapon, Darnold's game will change. Imagine Mahomes running the offense without Kelsi? You guys disrespect Darnold and staying or leaving the Vikes will be his choice. Although, you guys are entertaining.
Judd and Dex, do you guys only look at surface level stats? Addison is getting targeted on 17.5% of throws this season (not including the first 3 games due to injury), which is slightly higher than his percentage of targets last season… The difference is the Vikings are throwing 7-10 LESS times per game than last year. Do you want them to stop running and start passing more?
Vikings fans are funny you were just saying how great darnold was and this and that now all of a sudden they lose two games its his fault!? Lol and jj i love the guy cause im a Michigan fan but careful what you wish for he's not going to be good right away there's going to be some growing pains with him and he has accuracy problems there's a reason michigan ran the ball 85 to 90 percent of the time just sayin!
The one massive hole in your qb cap logic you guys fail to mention is what if JJ is a complete and total bust? Is not durable or whatever number of things that can go sideways with QBs drafted in the first round? You guys talk like JJs a guarantee to be a franchise qb and he hasn’t even taken a dozen snaps with the first team in practice. We got lucky to find a qb like darnold in FA, that isn’t going to happen every year. If JJ ends up being a bust like an alarming number of QBs drafted in the first round, the Vikings will be where the falcons were last year at the games most important position..desperate for a qb, drafting one in the first round in addition to backing up the brinks truck to a qb in FA that likely won’t be there..franchise QBs don’t become FAs often…the Vikings will be a stacked team that has no chance because no position in football impacts wins and losses more than the qb. See mid 2000 Vikings prior to Favres arrival. What player on our current roster would effectively end our season if he were injured tomorrow? It’s not JJ or darrisaw..it’s darnold. Ps - take your own advice, “act like you watched a season of football before.” 🤡 Btw - Mackey already claimed victory in the life after Kirk discussion when passtronot got lucky and won his first couple games, how did that work out? Funny how you guys swept that whole take under the rug. 🤡
They should offer Darnold a contract. Look at the rest of the league and who they have at QB 1 or 2. Darnold has already made a bucket of money why wouldn't he like to stay with KOC?
No one is reading all this. Danrold is a product of the KOC system. McCarthy can do the same thing, if not more, at a 1/5th of the price. McCarthy enables way more spending in free agency. Unless you actually believe Darnold is the only reason we haven't won a Super Bowl? 🤡
Love the show....and the optimism..... McCarthy is still an unknown at this point.....Darnald is known. ....and we would all agree it is not even probable that JJ will be as good as Sam is now next year.....so I caution against having all eggs in one basket
Question everyone needs to ask themselves is why does this team always start extremely hot then the offense gets turned down to ice cold? They literally look like the most elite offense in the NFL for the first quarter of every game then they just fall off a cliff. Why does that happen?
KOC forcing square peg plays into the round hole players he has. He has been continuously stuck in a linear mode of play calling, figuring "this play will work," without regard to whether he has the correct talent to carry out his genius.
It's not likely we will have 11, 12 wins. More likely to have 8-10 wins. In that case, I'm not sure Darnold leaves for a starting position next Fall. JJ is an unknown commodity. It would be best case to keep Darnold around because if JJ is not ready, or gets hurt then we have no 2025 season.
I hope Darnold leaves and get a massive bag from a contender. Let these clowns have their savior McCarthy. Flores is gone next year. Team will crumble.
@jonathan45732 just objectively false. His passer rating was higher, he *didn't* throw a wildly inaccurate interception (Stafford), he brought them back from down 2 scores, and if Nailor can catch a ball in his hands he has 3 TDs. The one constant for horrible 2nd and 3rd quarter offense the last 3 years is Kevin O'Connell and his inability to call drives after the 15 scripted plays to start games.
Like Thor said just because players are good in college doesn't mean it trabsfers to college. McCarthy played a half game against scrubs in preseason and out for the year. Shade of Watson always hurt although Watson is more talented than McCarthy. A hyped qb by Harbaugh saying he's better than Brady...🤣🤣🤣 Anyone like Harbaugh that had a chance to pickup a qb better tban a goat qb is a moron. 7 SB rings and McCarthy is going to be better. Harbaugh should've jumped on taking him. The thing is McCarthy DID NOT carry Michigan. It was their running game that did with sprinkles passing in. McCarthy had an NFL caliber oline in college. Now he is in the big boy league with, I might add, a line thsts of a lesser caliber than Michigan had so its not anywhere as easy. Ingram figured that out along with a plethora of other top draft picks that failed the last 3 years. Dallas Turner seems to be going down that road. Penix Jr carried Washington on his back with his passing. If Atlanta wouldn't have take him I really think the Vikings would have. As it turns out people were all worried about Penix holding up and he played all preseason without an injury. Thats hilarious.
I have to imagine that if Stafford hangs it up this offseason, he will 1000% be headed to McVay and the Rams. Or if Tua is forced into retirement, Miami is another option. Aside from those two, I don't see many attractive destinations for him.
There were a couple of games in there that the Vikings scored to keep the score up two scores, it's essentially the same thing as coming back in the fourth.
33:08 Just sign Bahktiari, leave Brandel at LG and let Risner challenger Ingram for RG. I’m so tired of watching them move tackles guard, then back to tackle. Make the least amount of moves as possible with the o-line
Hot take the Vikings will suffer without CD on the oline a lot more than anyone is aware, Sam plays pattycake too much and without Darasaw he’ll have much less time to go through his progressions
Feel like what you said is a no shit moment like no shit we are going to suffer, also Kevin Oconnell said they are changing the offense to be a faster paced offense
What's the comparison? And how many free agent acquisitions would we have lost if we still had Kirk and his contract? Greenard, Van Ginkel, Cashman, AJ? It's not just about Darnold.
The colts just announced that Joe Flacco will the QB moving forward. I like the decision from the colts. This will be a testament to the Vikings. Can the Vikings beat the colts with Flacco at the helm? That’s a big maybe for me if I’m honest.
Hot take, this season will be more successful than next years season. Every nfc north team will be great next year and the Vikings will be starting a “rookie qb” that has only shown decent things in a pre season game.
He was gone the moment he signed here. His goal wasn't to become the long-term answer in Minnesota. It was to show he can be a Starter in this league (and he's done that).
KAM needs capital to sign FA’s to fill out the roster due to poor drafting. Economics will make it prohibitive to resign Sam who will make +30 million a year.
JJ barely threw the ball at michigan. He has bust written all over him, plus all the tall about mediation and being depressed. Big red flag for me. Darnold has a top 5 passer rating. Darnold has earned the spot up until now.
It's extremely hard to screw up a meniscus tear repair, unless someone or something hits your knee. Had the exact same surgery and was roofing 2 months later
