Minstrel Man (1977) | Glynn Turman Ted Ross | Very HTF

This 1977 TV movie starring Glynn Turman and Stanley Bennett Clay is rarely shown due to its controversial ending.
Shared for historical purposes. I do not own the rights.
#####
The era of black minstrelsy as captured in the lives of two brothers: one an extroverted song-and-dance man determined to break tradition and own his own minstrel troupe in a field dominated by black-faced whites; the other an introverted and innovative ragtime pianist and composer struggling to break away from the stereotypes haunting black artists. Fred Karlin received an Emmy Award nomination for his musical score.
#####
MINSTREL MAN deals with an almost unknown chapter of the American stage: the era in the last quarter of the 19th centry when black entertainers had to don the 'blacking up' makeup originally worn by white mintrel-show performers--to hide their own blackness beneath the makeup of a white man imitating a black in order to be accepted by white audiences"--1977 Peabody Awards entry form excerpt.

This was sad but when you think about it entertaining the master was a way of surviving and putting food on the table for their family's. All Creatures of God will do anything to survive especially in the early years of American society . I was born a black man in the uk in the 60s and they used to show black & white minstrels on national tv to millions . It had very high ratings in the millions . I do wonder if the same applies today for black entertainers & if they see the trick or catch . We still dancing singing kicking & throwing ball today 2019 why & for who?
@HypnoticHollywood
@HypnoticHollywood 4 года назад
Most people who dance, sing or play sports have done it since childhood because they enjoy doing it with no thoughts about appeasing white people. When they grew up whites just happened to own the TV and radio stations that allow entertainers and athletes to showcase their talent and passion. You really think people like Michael Jackson and Michael Jordan became great to entertain white people, and not because they loved what they did?

It took me to another time and place, put me in another person's shoes, had an interesting subject matter, dealt with a deep theme ("there are more important things than survival...than ambition"), and was competently written and acted. And even with this subject matter, in the end it idealized a common goodness in people. Even with the atrocious picture quality, this film was still better than everything put out today, by miles and miles. Thanks again for another enriching experience that is sure to eventually be memory-holed or made illegal in the coming years.

I wish someone would make a remake of this movie, so it can be nominated for an Oscar. It makes me cry to realize what my ancestors had to endure to survive. It makes me angry at what is developing today in 2021. I ask the question is mankind essentially evil or good? I think mankind is essentially evil but can overcome that by working hard to be good.

I loved this little known film since I first saw it 1977. When I would bring the film and the history ofminstral history people would react saying they had never heard of it WELL !! Thanks to RU-vid I can now direct to see this thought proving film. This is probably the first seen Mr. Truman perform and I was impressed. I cried when tragically died. The following probably doesn't matter much but when I was very young and my father bought an album of records I fell in love with Al Jolsons rendition of April Showers and Rosie You Are My Posie. A song that was so popular at its time that one day while locked in because of Covid I began watch>g RU-vid Brit films I caught Justice 1974 the wonderful Anthony Valentine entered the office singing Rosie. I also loved Fred Astaires homage to Bill Robinson and I wasn't really looking at what Fred was wearing I was watching his feet. And yes I know that Mr.Robinson didn't use taps on his shoes he wore special shoes with wooden soles. THANKS FOR MAKING THE FILM. AVAILABLE.

Bother brothers entertained white people and so what is the difference because I feel like they both could have learned from each other why make a big deal out of being the way you are. We all can gain something from the other without stopping your growth. This is what the younger brother did and I don't call this smart and I'm not going to say it was a dumb move because it was after all his true feelings but now that he is dead I feel like what he could have learned and at some point in his time made a way for not just himself but for all, living laughing and parting with people is more dangerous to me than to be entertaining people we know don't like us. I am with Harry on this because at least we can see him make mistakes and grow. When we die for a cause the truth is the effect of the world to see you in everything you do for others is the only thing that can save you but when you give and are not sure who is ready for it to be in a world that teaches us that we forget the past and that's what you do then the death of a dream for a people continues to die with different people trying hard to not be responsible for the way they are today and who is wrong for blaming others for the moment while using only pieces of our history when it all goes together it's like magic and music when you put it together you have a string of our ancestors DNA. Everyone has a story if you just listen you can hear it and know their truth without them really saying it but the tricky thing about this way of living is Sin and the biggest mistake on earth that seems to be the problem. Someone else decides at the end of all the craziness of the day just because the truth is that we show confusion we be for this and that (everything around us) but family, friends and just learning how to be with people is a choice but we choose to be the same Way with family and when someone comes makes a mistake or can't see something the same way we shut them don't just like when election seasons are over we for get all that happened after all that talk about the changes we wanted to see. The socialist done went back to review and go back on the word for more money, they flip flip cause they can see how the seriousness of the world and don't take things serious about the next generation to repeat it again. Who cares we living the life while our children are abused by society and the way they lived their own lives in a way that will show who they are. I just wanna party, I aint got time to study and so by the time they can see the real they have made so many mistakes including with the law there are things that they wish to do better at but sometimes they keep getting hurt again and caught up with the wrong crowd of people that think they are helping you out.

I was thinking that myself but I am watching during UK bed time. I mainly try catch key moments..maybe they could have paced it different or emphasised ideas with more colour.

Harry don't you got your own mind,do what works for you and the people. It's all about entering the way we live and learn from them so that we laugh at our own differences and pain and pleasures. That is what I see, simple and easy to find out what god wants you to know that I will do better for you but not without god. Perhaps I am ignorant and don't want to see the good in people who don't mind playing with the minds of our youth today.

I see got Harry, you didn't have to put on makeup (Blackface) just to sing or dance because that is the thing no one could take away from you. I think that he would have figured this out eventually and his brother's timing wasn't a good thing and got him killed and his brother saved but it was still a choice that Harry had to make for himself about it.
