A crowd favourite at the Kentucky Derby. True to the cocktail defintion, whiskey, sugar and bitters with the addition of fresh mint.
INGREDIENTS
- 75mL Bourbon Whiskey
- 30mL Sugar Syrup (1:1)
- 3 dashes of Angostura Bitters
- 6-8 Mint Leaves
HOW TO
1. Add all the ingredients to your cocktail shaker
2. Shake & double strain over crushed ice into a julep cup (or an old fashioned glass)
3. Stir to frost up the julep cup
4. Garnish with a mint sprig

You can always make the "poor man's mint julep," too. Brush your teeth and then take a shot of bourbon.

Yeah, too bad the bourbon is actually the most expensive ingredient. Even with Kentucky Deluxe or Carstairs, the bourbon is more expensive than the sugar, mint & bitters.

Great video and thanks for the heads up about muddling. I really appreciate how you give both metric and imperial measurements in the latter videos.

During mild winter, mint still grows in my garden and can be enjoyed on warmer weather winter days when it’s 60 degrees Fahrenheit

Well sir, I just made a Mint Julep a'la Steve, and it tastes just damn delicious! We got ourselves a storm brewing here in Louisiana, and so the weather is nice and humid which is to say that this mint julep hit the spot! My only critique of myself would be that I need to get some fresh mint (or plant my own mint bush), because I can tell that this is store-bought mint. So the way I see it, whether it be the "old school" method or your method, either is going to make a tasty drink that'll go great with a balmy, summer evening...lol. As always, keep up the good work, chief! Sláinte!

Glad to here you like the "steve method"! Haha Can always tell the difference between homegrown and store bought mint! The store bought usually doesn't even compare..

@jacobnorton4413

Hmmmm, I'm going to have to try this method out, chief. I usually build the drink in the Julep cup by lightly muddling my mint with the syrup, then I add my bourbon and crushed ice; however, this looks a bit less complicated (plus I will admit, the shaker is my favourite part of mixing drinks..lol). Also, before I put the extra mint as garnish, I like to give the sprig a good slap in my palm...that gets the oils and aromas going nicely. As always, keep up the good work, chief! Look forward to trying this method out!

Just rewatched the vid and have no idea why I used this method to make them...can't say they are hugely popular in Australia and I've really only made a handful of them but I usually make them using the same method as you which is probably more 'authentic' as well....I think this was the fifth cocktail of the day so I was probably on my way! Yeah, slapping is a good idea, definitely gets the aromas and oils happening! Let me know what you think if you give it a try - it does make the mint pretty prominent but without the little minute pieces that get stuck in your teeth =)

Steve the Bartender Fifth cocktail of the day?? Hahaha man, you are alright! 😆 I'll let you know how mine turn out, and I agree with you with about the mint in the teeth...real pain in the ass.

Did you have any other bitters in hand? If you’re stuck, I guess a twist of orange peel would add some bitter notes but wouldn’t be an exact replacement...
