Great channel! YT and its so-called algorithms sucks big time, I don't know how many times I have searched for this content and always getting the same or not related results. Finally, I've clicked on some random reddit link and voila! I have 3 Mir-1 lenses (Mir-1, Mir-1a and Mir-1v) and I love them (photography only) but I completely agree with you. There is nothing special that would justify current prices, not only for Mir-1 but for any vintage lens hype. Old lenses should be cheap replacement or, in some cases, collector items. That's it. Sir, you got yourself a new subscriber.

Ah finally!!!! Someone agreed with me. Love your comment @kruno7150 . Thank you. I think this is the buyer remorse syndrome. People absolutely want to be convinced that they have found something exceptional, and have difficulty being objective. IMO the Mir 1b is only useful if you want a timid swirl in the bokeh. Apart from that... I don't see. PS: Your comment just reminded me that I still have it. 🤦‍♂️

@@fredr. (this is coming from someone who has almost 150 vintage lenses) of course, the only exceptional part for me is the fact that 70-100 years old lens works in modern camera. But for other use than hobby, i'll go with modern AF lens. On the other hand, I must admit, photos taken with vintage lenses are getting 2-5x times more likes on my wife FB account than photos taken with (good) phone or AF lenses.

I really dig your take on this lens. You might like the early Mir 1A, in the aluminum housing and if so, make sure you get a KMZ version of the lens. The KMZ factory was where the lens was designed and the earlier ones have better materials and glass and produced on better equipment. Your animations draw me into the lens, which is inspiring. Certainly more exciting than my videos, but I'm still finding my voice. Great work man, you earned a follower!

Thank You @ClickClickComrade. We already discussed about this lens and your videos on Facebook, in the group Soviet Lenses or Vinatge Lenses for video. I don't remember which one. Might buy the Mir 1A when the prices will be reasonable, thing that won't happen anytime soon :D

@@fredr. Nice Fred! I didn't make the connection. I've been working on that lens flip transition you did in the video. Your stuff is so good. Cheers!

I have frozen the frame when I trow the lens, added the shot of the lens on green screen, used some key frames to match the dimensions, size and position, speed-ramp and voila! Quite easy to do..

Man ur animation is top tear lover ur videos 😊😊😊. Also do have any recommendations for lens filters based cause i only saw one video u have on it cause im literally starting out an i dont want to buy the wrong things
@fredr.
@fredr. Год назад
Thanks Michael, really appreciate ✊. If you are talking about ND filter, you can have the cheap Fotga or Andoer ND filter, it will do the job, but they are not good. Better invest in a K&F Concept. So you won't have to buy it again.
@Francois3k
@Francois3k Год назад
Hey I took your advice on k &f concept for the basic nd filter an step down rings an there awesome but i just don't should buy with it cause I saw alot of recommendations that I need like black mist, circle polarize an other filter in ice k&f brand. im want do if for video an photos so I want ur honest opinion on what I should buy cause there many options since ur G.O.A.T for cheap filmmaking 😊😊
@fredr.
@fredr. Год назад
@@Francois3k LOL i am the GOAT of nothing :D Just like you: Just searching and trying. But since you ask me, IMO: - Polarized filter : Must have ONLY if you plan to film reflective surfaces, like car, windows, water stuff like that. I have one from Andoer taking the dust, never used. PS: Don't buy any Andoer filters: Garbage! - Mist filter. IMO way over hyped. Ok If you mostly use modern lenses. If you are shooting with vintage lenses, you don't need it. Vintage lenses are generally already too soft for a mist filter. If you really want one: K&F Concept 1/8 or better: the 7artisans. - UV filter: Waste of money, excepted if you plan to resell the lens and need to protect the front glass. If so, don't buy the cheapest ones at $5. They will dirty the picture, especially on wide angle (I bought UV filters for all my lenses. Removed all and only use a hood for protection). But the most important: Don't take a filter that does all. Cause you want to control everything and even the K&F have bad press. Hope it helps. Have fun! ✊

PS: The cheap $10 VND Fotga with the red ring is fine. It make the lens sexy and it does the job.

I completely agree with your take on this lens. As a matter of fact, I’m done with RU-vid and its multitudes of wannabe filmmakers. I was sold on the hype of this lens too, only to find out there’s nothing special about it. Some even compare it with the Flektogon 35mm f2.4. When I see such comparisons, I just know this person does not own both. Because if they did, even a blind person can tell the difference. Now I have two boxes of vintage lenses. I hope to sell them someday.

FYI this is my most disliked video. Can't please everybody. 🤷 I did not used the lens since. But might give an other try if one day I have absolutely nothing else to do.

I am not a fan of Mir, I prefer my Minolta 35 1.8. But you are wrong about Mir. It is not average it is worse - it does consist of aberrations only and this makes it a sort of true cinematic Helios. The trick with mir-1b is to treat it the same way you do with the helios 44-2, but you close down the aperture on mir up to f5.6. You find the right background to reveal the bokeh, but remember you shout a movie not a still image, so in order to get enough of DoF you close down to f4-5.6. But the mir keeps its aberrations even closed down, so you get a noticeable helios bokeh but in a very gentle amount - so its effects does not dominate you "cinema". It's nice but does this effect worth 100 usd?! Again - on Mir-1B you close down the apperture, it does not make its character disappear.

Hi Sergey. Let's be agreed to disagree. You might not realize it, but your comment just confirms my opinion: If one has to close down a lens to f5.6, and must find the "right background"... It simply means that the lens is not good enough for normal usage. Also, I don't consider a swirl bokeh as criteria of quality of a lens, but identity only. Many lenses produce a swirl bokeh. Preference for a lens is a personal choice, based on the emotions of each. You like it? Good. I don't like? it's still good. Each of us has his own opinions. It does not mean that one of us is wrong or right. It is just a personal taste. Take it easy friend.

19 Comments in 10 months for this amazing video? What injustice is this?? As for my 2 cents, I think now there is an over-expectation of any vintage lens being "magic/film-like/vintagy." I always browse flickr when researching a lens, and set it to sort by most recent, this way I can see what the average person makes using any lens. Also I think if the original people who created these lenses were to read these discussions they'd think we were all insane.

Wow! You read my mind. Your comment is spot on with some thoughts I had recently. Optical manyfacturers, Professional photo/videographer of the 70 would bang their heads in 2024. A bad lens in the 70s is stil a bad lens in 2024. I guess it comes from the fact that everyone has their own agenda: to sell their videos, to sell their stock, or to act as an expert, or the owners don't want to hear that they wasted their money on certain models. .🤷 Anyway this video in not amazing, IMO it is just good. I should have remove the animations, done some testing, compared it to other lenses to be great.

Great honest review!! I have a Mir 1B and I prefer it more for photography than filmmaking so far. I need to use it more for video for a while though to see if it will be a lens I use regularly. What focus gears do you use for it?? I bought some tilta follow focus gears and they didn’t work at all for my vintage lenses.

On the contrary, no mention anywhere that MIr 1B was used. More likely that an Helios and a Jupiter was used for the Emperor and daughter sequence and that's it. But people just want to to believe what they want and dismiss the 98% of the rest of the movie that was shot on: ARRI Moviecam 40mm T2 CANON 50-1000mm T5-8.5 OPTICA Elite 135mm T1.9 ZERO OPTIK Rokkor 58mm T1.3 ARRI Moviecam 60mm T2 ARRI Moviecam 50mm T2 ARRI DNA 65mm T2.8 ARRI Moviecam 60mm T2 And filmed on Arri Alexa 65 and Mini LF. Fraser would had replaced the Soviet lenses by any vintage lenses it would have not made any difference. 🤷

@@fredr. well, the guys behind cvp were stating that on their video. Maybe they are wrong? But what would the 37mm vintage they shot be? They instagram post had 58mm, 85mm and 37mm lenses. Nice videos by the way. I love your reviews

Better asking Fraser via IG if the mir was used. For me it won’t change much my idea on this lens: average.
