A guy who wants to go out with a sweetheart like Maureen O'Hara- relatable; A divorced, single mother, who doesn't trust guys, relatable; A little girl from a divorced parents situation, who wants and needs a home with a mom and a dad- relatable; An old guy, who wants to help people, and turn things away from selfishness, it's a stretch in today's self regarding, no thought for others society, but relatable and hoped for; A guy who thinks he's someone he isn't and dresses up to play that role to help others, totally relatable, except that current self delusions have nothing to do with helping others and are self destructive.
@okchristina

I agree with all of that! What is not as relatable today is the pop culture and mannerisms of the day back then. Especially with the old Hollywood accents and demeaner poured over the top. A few things were lost in translation or were just a funny surprise. The rest was so interesting to watch. I love seeing movies from a different time!

@@okchristina Portable phones, word processors, beepers, pet rocks, Milli Vanilli, disco music, Cabbage Patch dolls, shoulder pads in women's jackets, bad hair styles - from just a few decades ago are even more jarring to me. A good script, acting, cinematography, and especially a compelling story, transcend all that.

The film is set in the 1940's after WWII. As a former employee of Federated Stores (Bloomingdale's, Macy's, et al), the parade management staff is based on 34th Street at the Macy's Flagship building. Yes, there is a staff coordinator. The people handling the balloons and floats are Macy's staff. Yes, there are lockers in employee areas of the Macy's building. Most department stores did and still do provide staff lockers for certain employees.

Very cool to know -- all! Thanks! The lockers make sense. Just have never seen such a large collection of them like that! And kudos to the staff running the parade!!!!

It's certainly relatable to today, more so than Luke, Princess Leia and Han Solo. It's been remade multiple times, set in the contemporary period, but not as effectively. William Frawley was best known for playing Fred Mertz, landlord and husband of Lucy Ricardo's (Lucille Ball) best friend, Ethel Mertz, in the legendary "I Love Lucy" 50s sitcom.

Yes, I have learned now that he was in I Love Lucy. I knew I really recognized him! And I agree that certain points about life in the plot are relatable, but the pop culture was not. 75 years is a long time in human civilization!! Things change fast.

Nice reaction to a wonderful movie! Edmund Gwenn won a best supporting Oscar for his role as Kris Kringle. Upon receiving the award he said, "Now I know there is a Santa Claus." The cast got along so wonderfully on the set. Maureen, John Payne ('Uncle' Fred), and Edmund would walk around on the streets of New York after shooting was done, looking in the windows at all the Christmas displays. Maureen said that Edmund took such joy in it, like he was a kid expecting gifts instead of the man delivering them. Natalie Wood actually started to believe that Edmund was Santa, and the actor who played Alfred said that he was delightful and mentored him so much during the filming. He was also the only actor from the original to appear in the remake that came out in the 90s. Maureen O'Hara (and all the rest of the cast) loved being a part of this film. Later in life she said "I don't think I will ever tire of children asking me, 'Are you the lady who knows Santa Claus?' I always answer, 'Yes, I am. What would you like me to tell him?'" Priceless.

"Oh, Christmas isn't just a day, it's a frame of mind... and that's what's been changing. That's why I'm glad I'm here, maybe I can do something about it." Merry Christmas! ✝️ 🙏 🎄 🎁 Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of Thelma Ritter and Marlene Lyden. Historical Fact: The Post Office Department was a Cabinet-level department of the executive branch of the U.S. Federal Government from 1829 until 1971. Lost In Translation Fact: In the untranslated dialogue with the Dutch girl (Marlene Lyden), Kris (Edmund Gwenn) asks her what she wants for Christmas. She says she wants nothing, telling him she got her gift by being adopted by her new mother. When Worlds Collide Fact: Both Macy's and Gimbel's were approached by the producers for permission to have them depicted in the film. Both wanted to see the finished film first before they gave approval. If either had refused, the film would have had to be extensively edited and re-shot to eliminate the references. Fortunately, at the test viewing both were pleased with the film and gave their permission. Method Actor Fact: Unbeknownst to most parade watchers, Edmund Gwenn played Santa Claus in the actual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade held on November 28, 1946. Cameras were set up to capture some of this performance. He fulfilled the duties of most parade Santas, including addressing the crowd from Macy's marquee after it was over. He was introduced to the crowd by Philip Tonge, who played Mr. Shellhammer, and later unveiled the mechanical Christmas display windows to the accompaniment of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker (1892). This gesture symbolized the opening of the Christmas season there.
@okchristina
@okchristina 6 месяцев назад
Oh I was wondering what the Dutch convo entailed. Thanks! Also, apparently thanks to Macy's and Gimbel's for agreeing to let the movie proceed! And wait wait wait... did that Nutcracker display help boost the popularity of the ballet production that I now perform each year? Multiple productions. We all experience it each year as a fun tradition, but The Nutcracker is NOT easy to play!!! Take a look at the musicians next time you see it and afterward you will see how exhausted they are. And ready to go home. lol

Yes Mrs O'Hara was The Dukes favorite leading lady , they did 5 or 6 movies together . But you have to understand a John Wayne movie features him . The Quiet Man does star them both with close to equal screen time. It's just a great John Ford movie ! McLintock is a comedy western that also stars them both . Rio Grande , 1950 B W is John Ford Classic Big Jake is the last movie they made together , her screen time is short but she's a bad ass in it.@@okchristina FYI John Ford was the Spielburg of his day . I don't think any of the above movies will grow your subs , but some that will ! Great Reaction..... To this Classic Movie Staple (Must See).... Maureen O'Hara and John Payne starred in several movies together in the 1940's..... Kris Kringle" was performed by actor Edmund Gwenn, who starred in many popular films of the 30's, 40's, and 50's. Gwenn won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for this role. He also starred in "Life with Father" (1947) co-starring William Powell (highly recommended); "Bewitched " (1945); "Apartment for Peggy, "(1948). Susan was played by a Young Natalie Wood... who would later co-star in "Rebel without a Cause" (1955) with James Dean; "The Searchers" (1956) with John Wayne; "West Side Story" (1961) as Maria.... I have heard a rumor that the Director/Producers went Very Far Out on a Limb...... They didn't have Approval from "Macy's" and "Gimbel's" till they were shown a final cut of the movie......

It takes place in 1946 (at least, the live footage of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade was taken that year). That was also the year that many European orphans were adopted by American families (the film references the Nazi bombing of Rotterdam, where the Dutch girl lost her parents).

Edmund Gwenn died in 1959 and his remains were cremated at Chapel of the Pines in Los Angeles. In those days they did the bulk of cremations in the area. Not everyone had their remains buried, scattered, or held by family. Some chose to remain in their extensive vaults. (Among those are Thomas Mitchell [Uncle Billy in It's a Wonderful Life]). Lasr year, two people, Jessica Wahl and Arthur Dark, set out to survey more than 10,000 sets of cremains at the chapel. And in March of last year they found Edmund's urn. They asked for and received permission to have him inured in a public place. On December 3, his urn was placed in a niche at Hollywood Forever Cemetery.

One of my favorites but then of course that's because I'm a bit biased. You see I was a Santa at downtown Minneapolis Macy's in their last year! And in fact several of the events shown in the movie happened to me. I had one girl who was from Germany and their parent was saying not to expect to converse. However I knew enough German to be able to ask her to sit down and talk about Christmas trees and gifts. I also was able to recommend to a pair of parents where they could find toy Dragons for their daughter. By the way the actor you can't place played Fred in the television series "I Love Lucy.' Please do try to watch this again and remember to believe in a little magic yourself!

If you look at the outcome the way that you obviously stated... That it was all just technicalities there is no wonder you didn't find any magic in the movie... However, if you look at it from the point of view that Santa Claus himself found there was no other way to reach Mrs Walker and little Susie than to purposely put himself in a perilous situation and draw them all together by trying to rescue him. Meanwhile, he orchestrated All of the pieces of the trial. So everything he needed showed up just on time. Everyone thought they were the one making a difference in the case. Fred even believed that he had "taken a kind little man and proved he was Santa"... But by the end Santa's plan brought Mrs Walker out of her shell, taught Susie about faith and imagination, gave Fred confidence to go out on his own and brought them all together as a family. He also managed getting a new x-ray machine to the old folks home, getting rid of Sawyer bringing Kimball and Macy together for the common good and numerous other small blessings.
@okchristina
@okchristina 6 месяцев назад
You're right! I think as the movie went on (and even afterward) I realized more of the magic and therefore the technicalities were really only limited to the courtroom proceedings.

Yes, in my opinion, a distant second. One of the problems was that the title of this original '47 movie had a double meaning to the audiences of the time. The two biggest department chains in America were Macy's and Gimbels, and each had their flagship store on 34th St., a block apart. Their rivalry was the source of legends - a common saying was "Would Macy's tell Gimbels?" So the "miracle" was that the two bitter rivals shook hands and worked together to get the X-ray machine. By '94, Gimbels was out of business. Macy's turned down letting the film use their name this time, saying the '47 film didn't need any improvements. So the remake had to create a pair of fictitious stores. Another feature of this original movie is that it reflects the paradigm shift in American society going on at the time. Most people lived in apartment buildings in crowded (but bustling) urban settings. But after the Depression and WWII, there was the flight to the suburbs, reflected in this and other movies and tv shows at the time (like I Love Lucy winds up with both families moving to Long Island). The remake couldn't use that idea. By the way, for years of watching this movie, I had always assumed that they used the real R.H. Macy to play himself, as the performance seemed pretty stiff. However, the real Macy founded his store in the 1870's and by '47, the business was no longer in the hands of any of the surviving family. Ditto for the Gimbel brothers who founded their store in the 1840's. And by the way, ditto - at one point, the judge points out the the district attorney was a republican. He was made to look like Thomas Dewey, who ran for president on the GOP ticket in '48 (after serving as NYS governor). His election seemed so certain by all the polling that they stopped doing that a few days before the election. Harry Truman squeaked it out, and the next day, he was photographed holding up a newspaper with the headline "Dewey Wins Election." Ditto ditto - the woman who was looking for the firetruck was Thelma Ritter, in her first (uncredited) role. She was more or less the same Brooklynese down-to-earth character in many other roles after this.
@okchristina
@okchristina 6 месяцев назад
I am definitely interested in seeing the second one. Some family members in the house went ahead and watched it this year. The kid liked it better and the adult did not. lol Guess we'll see next time around! That is interesting about the rivalry. I got that that was one of the miracles, but didn't realize just how well known it already was during that time.
