Hey there! This is a great question - in the first couple of weeks of an IUD insertion women may be at increased risk of developing an infection of the uterus because a foreign device was placed, with that said, hot tubs/jacuzzis may harbor bacteria, so if you want to be very safe I would hold off for at least a couple of weeks. You can always consult your women’s health provider as well! Thanks for your question.
@@NurseMidwifeBAE Great to know.Thank you so much. This information was very helpful. It was so confusing before. My doctor told me after two days I can do whatever I like. I knew this was to good to be true lol what if I wore a vagina condom. Can that protect me from getting bacteria in it ?
I honestly love the paraguard! My periods are regular, super predictable, and the worry free, long term, no hassle birth control is phenomenal with no weight gain, acne, or mood swings like with hormonal birth control methods. It works great for me. 🤗
@@cat_alyst6306 Did you have cramps when you first had it inserted and for how long? Also, I'm a little worried about having sex...does it hurt during orgasm? Sorry for the personal questions lol
@@amandawoodstock6261 lol so I did cramp but it wasn’t/isn’t unbearable my flow was a little more heavy, but my periods were more regular. Sex is normal, doesn’t hurt during an orgasm, you honestly can’t feel it at all. There was a time my husband said he could feel it when it was first inserted, but it was in place and it was only one time, I freaked and had an ultra sound and my doc thinks it was most likely the strings he felt. It wasn’t the actual IUD though.
This is a very good video! There are many childbearing age women who will appreciate this information. You did a great job explaining the two types of IUDs. Keep the vital information regarding women's health coming. Thank you.
Two years with the Mirena I am a person who suffered with fibroids and endometriosis; after I addressed my fibroids(I got the UFE procedure, two years ago as well), I immediately received my Mirena, and it has been one of the best decisions (next to my fibroid procedure), that I have ever done regarding my feminine health!!! No more heavy, bleeding no more cramps no period at all ... and I am a person whose curious used to have me debilitated for days ..since I am now 50 years old. I hope to use this until I go into full-blown menopause.😂 so ladies, if you are wondering whether you should get an IUD for birth-control and or heavy reading do it! Yes, it does hurt, but my doctor gave me a pill to take to dilate my cervix, and I also requested a numbing shot prior to the insertion..
I was kinda scared of being here since I've never had an IUD before, and this was one of the most concise videos on the types of IUDs available, as well as their drawbacks and their benefits. Thank you so much!
A lot of great information, thank you! Would you mind addressing the potential for copper toxicity with the Paragard? Everything I've heard from medical professionals and what research I've read indicates there's no evidence of copper toxicity from it, but I'd like to hear your thoughts as well. I've read a few scary anecdotes from women saying they've had disastrous side effects from "copper toxicity," but I haven't actually heard any medical professionals address this topic in detail.
I personally experienced copper overdose from a copper IUD, and I'm mad at people calling it toxicity. After my overdose I studied a lot of biochemistry, and did a lot of reading in medical specializations like gynecology and gastroenterology. And endocrinology. What your ob-gyn doesn't tell you is that copper is one of the metals that has been proven over and over again to be an inorganic xenohormone. Specifically, it's a xenoestrogen. So the ob-gyns claiming it doesn't have an effect on hormones simply don't remember their basic biochemistry courses. Interestingly, your endocrinologist would less likely to say that, oncologists also are trained in xenoestrogens, they remember a bit more about hormones and how eg. some metals like copper influence hormones. Why many women don't notice the hormonal effects is that corrosion rates vary between all of us. Less corrosion = slower oxidization = less copper uptake = less issues. But like you won't know in advance whether or not your uterus will feel like corroding the IUD fast. It's way more simple than what the copper toxicity circles make it sound like. It's just a matter of ob-gyn education being about 70 years outdated when it comes to copper (it's about 70 years ago when they started releasing many studies on copper being used to trigger ovulation, etc. and there are a lot of studies on metals in endocrinology since.)
For the hormonal IUD such as Mirena or Liletta, are they less likely to cause acne and weight gain/increased appetite compared to the shot or implant since the hormones in the IUD are mostly localized in the uterus?
I gained almost 100lbs on Mirena. I have an appointment to switch to Paraguard tomorrow. Will most of the weight gain start to fall off? I workout and track my meals etc, but the weight gain from Mirena was so severe 😭
This is what I'm scared of! I was told by my GYN Doctor that the Mirena doesn't cause weight gain because its medicine is produced directly to the uterus...I'm so confused and worried!
I just got a Mirena yesterday because I am perimenopausal and my periods have become much longer and heavier. It was not painful at all for me. It was very fast.
Amazing, I thought I was safe because it doesn't have hormones but it sounds like it can have similar side-effects like irritability, increased estrogen. Also it can increase ADHD and skin irritability and more. Thanks for the tip.
Thank you for this good explanation. Both the doctor and nurse tried to convince me not to get the paraguard and were quite defensive about it. The nurse told me my periods would never adjust. That they will always be as heavy as that first period after the paraguard is placed. And then she says she never places them🤔
I’ve had the Paragard for 10 years and it’s time to change it. I’ve had blood clots during my period this last year. I’ve heard the Paragard may cause this. What are your thoughts on switching to Mirena? I would prefer hormone-free. Thanks so much!
I'm not a doctor but I have had the Liletta IUD before which lasts the same amount of time and uses the same hormone as Mirena. The only thing I had an issue with was severe bloating and cramping. I didn't have a period though so that was a plus but over all I did like the hormonal IUD. I haven't had a copper IUD before so I couldn't tell you if the copper IUD would be better for me personally. In the end its up to you it's your body but I would say to try the hormonal one and if you don't like it you may be able to switch back.
Thank you for this very informative video. I have been trying out different types of birth control options and I just spoke with my OBGYN last week. She pretty much wants me to decide between these two, or to just settle for the less effective natural options (spermicides, condoms, etc). I naturally have painful periods and currently have numerous fibroids that are making things worse. My body also has iron absorbancy issues. I've had ovarian cysts before and I don't like that prospect, but I can't deal with these day to day issues anymore. So The Mirena it is.
@@victorianavarro9518 Mirena works for my body! I'm looking at my notes. It was placed in November of 2021. The first period afterwards was the bad cramping that I was used to, but no blood. The next time, I had spotting with mild to moderate cramping, and that seemed to happen once a month, but irregular dates, then it turned to just cramping without spotting at all. I wasn't sure when my period was anymore. In 2022, I think things settled down and it's my norm, which is no blood or spotting at all, and mild to moderate cramping for just a day, and it's back to every 28ish days. I can definitely deal with this. I do not miss pads and tampons or the 3 to 7 days feeling miserable. I got a fibroid embolization treatment done in December 2021. It's the more non-invasive option for fibroid treatment for people who are eligible, and that might also be why I was spotting in the beginning or why I had the worst cramping in the beginning, because it can happen as the fibroids die. My OBGYN did explain that not everyone's period will stop when using the Mirena, but it's like a 1/4 chance it will. But things should still feel better with it.
My gynecologist told me that copper causes a reaction of sorts inside the uterus basically resulting in a state of chronic inflammation that doesn’t allow for implantation.
I gained eight lbs having Mirena for 10 yrs. After I removed my second IUD, dropped that weight in a matter of weeks. PCP said synthetic progesterone causes fluid retention.
Hi! What are your thoughts on Kyleena? I originally went on the pill 10 years ago for very heavy periods and bad cramping. My periods are now much lighter and I ideally want to go on the Copper IUD but my doctor is nervous my cycle would become too heavy again and cause anemia
hey! what did you end up going with? i’ve been on the pills for 3+ years and would ideally like to go on the copper iud as well but i do remember having heavier bleeding which makes me nervous
After I gave birth to my third baby, I wanted to try the iud, so I went with homornal iud, and omg my baby is 7 months and I am at my heaviest weight ever , I am very active person, and exercise 7days a week, and I eat plant based food, but I am still at my birth weight . I HATE THE HORMONAL ( Merena) IUD! Weight gain, mood swings, anxiety through the roof !!!! I plan on switching to Copper non hormonal IUD but I am worried about the side effects: weight gain, mood swings, anxiety , etc Has anybody experienced any of the symptoms ?
Y'all better watch out for copper toxicity. I got inflamed joints for one year straight. Anger issues. Weight gain. My hip joints that were aching for over a year stopped within hours of taking out. Also my visibly bloated tummy lessened overnight immediately I took it out YESTERDAY. I also discovered ovarian cysts about a month ago. On the right side my pelvic joint was aching. Will wait for 2 weeks and see if my taking it out gets rid of the cysts. Also had to be on progesterone lately cos I kept having extended bleeding. Also got recurring BVs since getting the copper IUD two years ago and I never used to get that. Are these side effects worth it instead of men wearing condoms?? I think not.
Exhaustion too! It was great the first year just heavier periods and clots in my periods. Apparently it increases your estrogen if too much copper enters your body. I'm so never putting anything in my body again.
Virtual hugs! I had the same back in 2020. Doctors forced me to keep it in for 8 months. I very nearly died. I had 2 dozens of issues. "Interestingly", I went from being totally healthy pre-IUD to not being able to walk properly and unable to work while I had the IUD. Bloating, cysts, stomach bleeding, skin burning, nerve issues, eyesight problems, you name it, I had it. They removed the IUD, all those issues went away within 3 days!!! I just had to beg for 8 months straight for them to remove it. Anyway, since then I read up a lot about it, and I'm trying to raise awareness online. Cause the patient information leaflets don't tell you everything. And your doctor doesn't even say as much as the patient information leaflet does. I hope you're also doing fine. I still had bad ovulation for like 3 or 4 months post removal, so maybe brace yourself for that. Otherwise all good. Take care, and keep spreading awareness as well!
I had horrible periods with heavy bleeding and awful cramps, and I never had a period on Mirena. After Mirena, my cycles suck again lol Insertion is brutal though. Switching them out hurts no less.
Thank you for all the information. I am currently on the pill and the hormones have not done well with my body. It’s affected me mentally and physically causing lots of hair loss. I am considering getting the copper IUD since it’s hormonal free. However, was wondering even if I get the hormonal IUD would it affect me as much as the pill? Since the hormones are more local, I don’t know how much of an affect the hormones from IUD are compared to the pill. Thanks for the help
I was on the pill for 11/2 years im dont remember exactly when side effects started like moods swings depression and low sex drive, mentally im there but physically im there for maybe 2 mins at the most doesnt matter how much foreplayis involved i would dry up. Then about 2 years later (2 kids 18 months apart) i got mirena. Honestly the first few months was pretty good but now im starting to feel the same side effects as the pill but worst (itll be a year in august). From the depression to the dryness. But honestly thats just my experience.
Do you feel the same way and about the Liletta IUD as you do the Mirena? Do the same things you spoke about of the Mirena pretty much apply exactly the same as the Liletta? I just ask because my doctor only offers Liletta. Thank you for such an informative video!
I have the paragard IUD and let me tell u I hate it because when I get my period I do nothing but bleed non stop stop and go through all my clothes so I'm switching to mirena one I think .
One more question... Sorry to bother you so often. Wrt to the Paragard copper IUD from what I've heard it aggravated womens periods and in case of the hormonal IUD it caused too many mood swings hair loss and acne breakouts. That being said, what would be the safest option in case someone about 23y/o wants to opt Also can you say get your copper IUD removed before 10yrs say within 3 yrs take a break and then Re inserted the same IUD again?
You're not a bother. Yes, with the Paragard most women will notice that their periods become heavier, last longer, and tend to be more painful. Not all women, but a large number of them. With mirena, there can be those side effects you mentioned but are more rare. You might consider an implant/Nexplanon. It's place in the arm instead of the uterus. It's good for 3 years and one I commonly recommend to young women without children. I will do a video on this soon. And yes! You can absolutely have your copper IUD removed before the 10 years. You can choose at anytime to have it removed and reinserted at a later date. Hope this helps. But remember to consult your midwife or OB/GYN for more information.
I have 2 cysts on my right ovary and I have hair growth on my chin and adult acne despite acne not running in my family. My periods are fairly regular and light, but I get horrible PMS that includes nausea, lightheadness, and cold sweats. Is the hormonal or non hormonal better for me?
Thank you that was so detailed and informative, thank you so much❤️ Is there anything we can do to minimise the risk of infection after IUD insertion? (immediately after and long term care?)
My ob gyn offered me the skyla IUD and I’m wondering how different it is from the Mirena? She only explained it has a lower dose of hormones. Is there a large enough difference for me to choose one over the other? I do prefer lower hormones, but in what ways will the skyla be heavily more different than the Mirena? Other than the amount of time it lasts?
I was originally put on hormonal birth control due to irregular periods. It’s been years of me on the pill and I would really like to not be on hormones, do you think I could be a good candidate for the Copper iud?
Hi there! I am currently looking into the Mona Lisa Mini Iud (i live in Canada). This iud is non-hormonal, which is something I want. I have been on the pill (lolo) for 2 years now, and I have experienced severe bloating/weight gain and high levels of anxiety. My period used to be painful, but I really do not remember what it was like. Anyways, my question is: do the side effects of bloating, and heavier/painful periods subside after a few months? And, what is the chance of infection?
@@kristinkim6915 for sure! I got mine on August 18. I experienced some minor cramping for a few days and light bleeding for 3 days after insertion. I noticed digestion issues but those have subsided. My period came two weeks early on Saturday, it was really heavy the first three days (tampon change every hour and period underwear to avoid leaks) today is the 5th day and it’s pretty light. Cramps aren’t that bad.
@@katielewis2423 thank you!! I got mine September 9 and the cramps have finally gone away. I heard it can give digestion issues and honestly its just been making me poop more LOL. Not looking forward to the first period but lets hope for the best
My daughter has Hypothyroidism, has had a baby 6 years ago and gets puss filled cyst just inside the entrance maybe once every couple of years. Which do you suggest on the kind of IUD?
I had the liletta IUD and I liked it but it made me have severe bloating and cramps. Is that normal? Also while I had the IUD I had a positive low grade pap. Would recommend I get another or should I wait to see how my next pap goes? I also only had it for 6 months and decided to get it removed because of the bloating and cramping.
Is it good to use marina iud for a person that empty cup every two hours for around three days that bleeding is too much?In total menstruation last at least for seven days and menstruation start with pain around three days
I would like to switch from the pill to hormonal iud but I am very scared that my acne from my teenage years will come back since my hormonal level will change once I stop taking the birth control pills. I have read that it is recommended to wean off the pill in order not to shock your body but I am not very sure how to do it as I will have the hormonal iud. Would you please help me? Thank you very much!
Am with paraguard for two weeks now..I only bleeded for 3days after it was inserted..now i have serious clamps but do periods.this my 2nd week though.the backache too much
Hey there! Believe it or not, those are pretty common and normal variations in side effects. I'd say give it a month or two to see how your body adjusts.
I have had the paraguard for about 7 months, and I thought it was a barrier method. Is that true? I have also been having other symptoms I don’t remember reading about in the information packets when I got it like constipation and bloating that I never had so bad before. Are those symptoms that you can have just from having a foreign object inside you? Great video by the way! ☺️
Thank you! Yeah, I'm not the biggest fan of the Paragard pamphlets - they don't disclose possible adverse effects. I have had some women complain of constipation with an IUD, and certainly bloating. Thanks for watching.
I have heavy periods for first day or two and rarely cramps. Usually lasts 7 days but gets much lighter at around day 4 or 5. Maybe 3-4 times a year. And still want the para guard. What do you suggest?
Yepp, and then my hair would start to fall out, I would be lethargic... "Bbbut it cannot be the copper IUD" - said my doctor many times. Yeah, well, if I haven't ever been anemic prior to getting a copper IUD, and suddenly I am anemic, what is the cause again? 😂😂😂 Magic? I especially find ob-gyns repulsive since after removal my issues all went away. Hair growing back, I have energy, etc. They just don't want to deal with the paperwork of reporting the issues to the FDA I guess.
I had the copper iud inserted almost two months now… i have no cramping now but i have been spotting the whole two months. It stops, i try to have sex and theres blood all over the place. How is this normal?!! My doctor says its fine
What are permanent forms of BC? I currently have the paraguard- no real pain but I hate the heavy periods. I already have 3 kids. I don’t want to have more and never want to be pregnant again. What is the best option?
Sterilisation through surgery is the only permanent way but an IUD is generally considered the best long acting reversible method around. The implant is also great as a long acting method, but not permanent like sterilisation.
Mainly because of the longer periods. It doesn't apply to everyone because there is ko 1 size fits all when it comes to birth control. I just had my first period on the paragard and it's the same as it was pre-insertion. Minor cramps and normal bleeding.
Question: I had the mirena and gained over 70 pounds over the course of 4 years I was on keto, working out and nothing worked as far as loosing the weight. I changed to Paragurd copper iud. Do you think that will help with loosing the weight since the Paragurd is non hormonal?
I’m curious, since the Mirena is local, would it produce the same side effects as something like the pill or implant would hormonally wise throughout the whole body? Like weight gain, or depression? Thank you, great video! :))
Hey! This is such a great question, and commonly asked. Since the progesterone hormone in a Mirena IUD is secreted locally inside the uterus, there tends to be way less system adverse side effects as compared to other forms of birth control that gets metabolized through the blood. Weight gain and depression are rarely reported with the Mirena in my experience. Thanks again for your question! :)
Hi! I'm probably late but I have pcos myself and have had a hard time with pills. I had breakthrough bleeding and cramps even off of the pill. Mirana is the best decision I have made!
hey there! great question. If you were to become pregnant with an IUD in place, yes, you would be at increased risk for an ectopic pregnancy. This is rare though. Hope this helps!
Did any of you had brownish discharge after sex or having somthing in you I have mine for 2 weeks and last night i went to check the string it was fine but in the morning i had some brown gel like discharg
Hey! Great question! Yes. Within a couple of weeks from removing your Mirena, you hormone levels will start to level out, and menstrual cycle will return. Thanks for your comment. I invite you to like and subscribe for more contraception and women's health videos :)
I have recurring bv and yeast infections ever since I got the paraguard iud. I want to remove it and change it to Mirena (mainly for this). but you mentioned de PID and because I do have these recurring infections, and have been having them for so long, I'm thinking my risk will actually be truly higher... any thought if I should get another iud after removal or how long should I wait...?
I had the mirena years ago and got rid of it because I constantly had BV…I was planning to switch to Paragard next week because I no longer want kids but I hate that I still might run into the same problem
Hi I want to know about the cancer risk ? It was never mention but it says it on the level box of mirena I just got it done last week but the doctor never explain anything to me ... I google it and apparently there’s lawsuits because of the mirena. side effects hair loss ,acne , depression, higher risk of breast cancer specially in women between 30 and 39?
So the mechanism of action of the Mirena is: thickened cervical mucus so sperm has a harder time getting to the egg (there is some ovulating), it also thins the uterine lining to help prevent implantation, and finally , yes, as mentioned above, there is some suppressing of ovulation which plays a role in women not having their cycles with the Mirena. Thanks for your question!
