True. We should not reject traditional masculinity. Men and women are different and that should be celebrated, not denigrated.

respect to the speaker..but this shouldnt be a debate to begin with..men have the right to be as masculine as they want without asking for society's permission.

I am here for the feminity of the speaker... Intelligence and grace in equal proportions exist in her.

Interactions between humans will never improve much as long as we don't discuss the toxic portions of femininity too. To pretend that there aren't any toxic elements of femininity is akin to saying that there are no toxic elements to masculinity which many would deem comical at best. There is a reason that domestic abuse amongst lesbian women is higher than their straight counterparts, something the anti-male types conveniantly forget and or ignore. The issue is that the term toxic masculinity is too vague. What do people mean when they say that phrase? They rarely make it clear. Assertiveness? Emotional Strength? When the phrase 'toxic masculinity' is used they are casting the net extremely wide. That needs to change. There are good sides to masculinity just as there are good sides to femininity. Laziness in speech is the problem. Be precise in your speech, everyone.

Yeah, you guys can sit here and debate this all day. It makes no difference to me. I'm a man. I work, I cook, I fight, I hunt, I build, I groom, and whatever else I want to so long as I don't hurt anyone. Just know that less stable men are the ones suffering as they do listen to you and are killing themselves to live up to your standards.

Male masculinity is quite frankly whatever men want it to be, but increasingly are confused about how to express their innate masculinity because of the abject absence of masculine role models in the home and in the media

Why are we even having this debate?

Look around you. Everything you see was built by MEN. And the freedoms we enjoy were fought for, bled for, and died for by men. And all of this was and is made possible by traditional masculinity. To me, this is self evident. Women wanted rights and they got them, but never really had to bleed for them. They lobbied for them. Protested for them. Demanded them, but never REALLY fought, bled, or died for them. They just stayed home and let the men go off and fight. Now the subject of whether we should embrace or reject the traditional masculinity that secured us our rights is being debated. The world really has gone crazy.

This is a fantastic debate. I especially like this speaker. Context is important and we should not just throw out masculinity but work to understand it. There is also rarely any debate about toxic femininity. Which would be quite interesting to watch.

Even the question is loaded. 'Traditional' implies social constructionism. It assumes we are blank slates, at least insofar as the scope of this issue. It makes us think in terms of negotiable roles (wants?) rather than innate niches (needs?). The important question is to what extent can our culture reflect our nature, thereby allowing for individual authenticity, shared values, social harmony and meaning in life? How can we fashion a culture in which both sexes can thrive? Male suicide rates scream that we are not there yet.

As a man, I do appreciate that these debates are held in such a respectful manner but in my opinion, women aren't the sex that get to "decide" how man should behave. That job is meant for our fathers. For our uncles and grandfathers. It is for all men regardless of who you are. It is we as men who get to decide what kind of code we live by and it is we as men who judge each other by that very same code. The sooner we get back to this kind of system, the better off the world will be. To all the ladies out there who would complain about "toxic masculinity" or whatever the hell that is supposed to mean these days, let me remind of you something. It is because of men's masculinity that you are able to live the life that you do. Masculinity is the husband who protects his wife while she sleeps. It is the father who puts a band-aid on his daughter's scraped knee. Masculinity is the police officer who defends you from violent crime and it is the soldier who goes to war so that the enemy does not show up on your doorstep. Without masculinity, your entire world comes crumbling down before your very eyes. With all of that said, I do have hope for the future. More and more men are waking up every day to the harsh realities of our broken society. We have finally decided to fix things. We have finally decided to grab our hammers and nails, our paint brushes and paint, and yes even our guns and our ammo because we know deep down, that if we don't do it, no one else will.

There is sincerely a need for dress code for women as well at the Oxford Union. I am myself a feminist; but feminism and vulgarity ain't concurrent, nor are they concomitants of each other. We women, or anyone for that matter, would, quite inadvertently, squirm if a man were to step into a premise as such (a scholastic debate wherein the attendees would least expect any queasiness and overt sensuality) wearing a banana hammock- then why should the rules be different for any gender?
