I've decided to give you my business for the last two lenses I bought simply because of the effort you put on these videos. It would be easier to buy locally but I think we need to reward what you've been doing and I appreciate that you are open to test different things. I also need to mention that I've had top grade service with my problematic pentax d fa 70-200mm lens I had to return. I was offered a shipping refund for a doa lens focusing system and I didn't even had to ask for it. Obviously my next purchase was placed to you. The online assistance we receive when purchasing and also for the support is fantastic. Keep coming the video and I will make sure to send you my business. A++++++ would buy again :)
Well done video that basically mirrors my experiences thus far. What I find most encouraging is how much better adapted lenses work on the a7R3 vs the a7R2 (and even the a6500). That tells me a lot of the improvements come down to advances in Sony's focus system.
Dustin Abbott I agree. I have both the A7S2 and R2 and I have no trouble using legacy APS glass on the R2, since it has sensor pixels to burn. But I only use FF with the S2.
Great video. Thank you for your hard work. I would like to mention that the longer the lens, the more difficult it becomes for these adapters to focus quickly. There are a lot of wildlife/bird photographers out there with long lenses over 400mm that are anxiously awaiting improved accuracy and acquisition. Adapters and newer Sony bodies have come a long way, but IMO the final fronteer to conquer is long lens combinations. I frequently use the Canon 600 f/4 II as well as the Sigma 150-600 (Canon mount - Contemporary). I recently tested these lenses at 600mm and 840mm with the A7R3 and both the Metabones and MC-11 adapters work, but not to perfection. Good enough for still or slow moving subjects but not for lightning fast birds-in-flight. As you mention, they have come a long way over time, but not completely there yet. It would be great to see Sigma come out with a 150-600 native lens for Sony mirrorless. That would be an incredible combination. BTW, the Sigma MC-11 with the Sigma shorter lenses work very well for video too.
Great review. Large heavy lenses have a tripod lens foot. I've learned that weight forward lenses require larger ball heads with or without a lens foot on the adapter.
Im still on the fence, on moving from Nikon. The Sony glass is so expensive. There is the sigma glass coming but just primes for now. Are you moving from cannon?
moo yeah I've considered it but I don't need that many mega pixels. I'm shooting the d610 at the moment. Hoping for a d760 or d650 with d850s autofocus system but I've been waiting a while now. This Sony is very tempting.
Joseph Molloy I’m also moving from Nikon. I’m still trying to decide what I want to do.. I may go for the Nikon adapter (not too worried about performance. Anything is going to be better than my current body). But yeah it’s a shame that Sony glass is so pricey. I’m think I may just start a set of Sigmas
Chris, you should have done the AF while recording video. The AF speed differs while recording than while no card in the camera and not recording. (more CPU power available for AF) .
Ive been waiting to get a mirrorless cam for quite awhile now.. I just cant pick anything under 650$.. They all seem to be good at one thing and fail at another.. or perhaps im just wrong. Any ideas on what to buy? Id love 4k video (or some really good 1080p), and 20-24 MP quality for stills. Im a newby obviously, but no matter how much i read about it, i still cant decide on my own. Id love some help. / Thanks in advance!
Sony adapters to crop bodies do also work extremely well with the A6300 and A6500. I'd honestly say that aside from an A7II at those crazy prices these days, the A6300+Metabones+Canon combo is the best balance between quality glass/consistent performance and cheap prices for a mirrorless system today.
How is AF supposed to work with the MC-11 and Canon glass on video mode? Is there a setting that allows the camera to keep track and pull focus while shooting? I'm new to Sony cameras and I am trying to understand the use of autofocus on movie mode.
-40C = -40F. It's the point where the two scales meet. Incidentally, I believe it's also the temperature at which petrol (leaded - unleaded is a few degrees lower) ceases to be flammable.
What's more impresssive is that they made it not look cold. -20C is cold. But like good Canadians they we went outside without toque or mits. By +5C it's shorts weather.
I hope you guys will keep up with this, and keep us up to date. As a Nikon shooter with both a crop (D7100) and full-frame body (D810) I see two VERY important options that a great adapter would provide... especially for the Sony system. First, of course, some people could switch to Sony bodies, without the fear of costing a fortune in new glass. But just as important, for me... I'd consider trading in my crop sensor camera for a Sony A7 III, for example, while keeping my D810. Then I'd have a real opportunity to test Sony, and be more sure about it, before jumping ship entirely. I've been waiting, the same as many others, for Nikon to come out with their full-frame mirrorless system, but it's still not clear when this might happen. Thanks for all the work, guys!
This is my exact same situation. I have a D7100 and a D800. I have rented (3) separate Sony bodies (A6400, A7II and A7Riii) along with Nikon Z6 (hated it's low light capability); however, I LOVE the functions of the A7RIII and plan on purchasing it...however...I have both Nikon and most exclusively now, Tamron G2 lens (85 1.8, 24-70 2.8 and 70-200 2.8 Gen 2). LOTS of $$ invested in lens. I will keep my D800-regardless!! Now, I wish to keep and use all the functions of my Tamron lens for my Nikon on the Sony A7RIII body. Just need a good/reliable adapter that will adjust aperture, shutter, ISO, etc. functions on my G2 lens, minimally. Guess I'll have to keep looking and waiting. I do NOT need it for any video purposes...strictly portraiture use.
Quite a few of us fuji users like to adapt vintage lenses, but we only use these for certain subjects, specially the lenses with considerably lower contrast or those with swirly bokeh, so dead adaptors are all thats needed, but not every fuji shooter appreciates the results from legacy lenses and want something more crisper, so you are correct in saying that fuji glass is more than enough for fuji users already. That said, a decent EF to FX adaptor would be nice i guess, but it is not something i have really wished for, though an FX to EF-M mount could be a good idea seeing as canon glass for the M mount is so atrocious!
Thank you for doing this comparison. I've been using the sigma lenses with mc11 and been really happy with the performance. Haven't really felt a need to swap the sigma ef-lenses for native sony ones because they perform well.
The best in adapters guys you haven't mentioned is the Zhongyi Turbo11 focal reducer. Of course it's manual focus and not electronically connected...but the price and the quality is simply right on...
Very useful report, at least for Sony users. I'm afraid it's going to turn out that for the foreseeable future, picking the best-performing lens/adapter combo is going to have to be done on a case-by-case basis. (It would have been interesting, for example, to see if the Metabones' performance advantage with the Canon 85 applied to other Canon lenses as well.) Meanwhile, I hope you'll reconsider your no-Fuji stance if there's a follow-up video. While I agree that most of us Fuji users would just as soon stick with Fuji's own well-specified, semi-reasonably-priced lenses, I also think a lot of us would be interested in a good-performing AF adapter to gain access to lenses that aren't available in Fuji mount. For example, I know Chris didn't like this lens, but I would love to be able to use the Sigma 50-100/f1.8 for photographing stage performances, and the chances of Sigma ever putting it in a Fuji mount seem tiny. My only option is to use an adapter... but at this stage all the Fuji AF adapters seem to be coming from totally obscure Chinese boutique engineering shops, and I'm not quite gonzo enough to pay out US $300 to a company I've never heard of for a product that might or might not work decently... so some reliable testing would be very helpful!
Sigma just announced a bunch of ART lenses in the FE mount so there's also that. The A9 will actually track with adapted lenses at 10FPS, which is also something to consider. But for the most part if you need AF-C, go native. However, for AF-S, even the Mark II PDAF bodies will work fine. I have been shooting adapted glass on my A7II for almost 2 years and it's been great.
I am fast forwarding but I didnt see Viltrox EF-M2 adapter. Can you guys please check it out? Its like $200 on Ebay and other guys says that its metabones-like IQ.
R.I.P. 6Dm2, 5Dm4, 6D, 5Dm3, D750, D610...and all other sub-30MP FF DSLRs. Canikon: Let's jump ship and start making Sony lenses (or adapters thereof).
Thank you for putting the truth on the table. The tests I've done on the a9 arrived at very similar to the results with both the Metabones and Commlite adapter shown in this video. You've nailed it Chris!
I have cut the lump off the front of my COMMLITE ENF-E1 and can mount the Tamron 24-70 OK. Go carefully with a Dremel disc and stop frequently to let it cool.
Thanks for doing this test it is great to see where things stand at the moment. As a Nikon and m43 shooter, I am hoping that they can get some smart adapters to work there sooner than later even if the performance is not great. I personally don't have a G9 yet but from what I have read and seen the AF always is going to look like it is hunting when tracking an object but I hear when you actually are taking frames it is extremely reliable and probably if you had done a running test it would likely have gotten a lot of keepers. This is only for stills in video I would agree it is likely to look terrible. It will also be interesting to see what the rumored new Nikon mirrorless system will offer and can it get close to catching up with where Sony seems to be.
The whole photography world is so different from what it was just 5 years ago. You don't notice it in the baby steps over time but if you dig out an old camera you used in the 2000's and try to use it it's amazing to see how far we've come!
I've also tested the Sigma MC11 can focus continuously very well in video with Sigma glass, I believe that's the only combo that works for video. I don't think metabones can do video AFC consistently with any lenses in might be wrong!!
Also MC-11 has some limitations in phase detect points coverage. At least mine has. The Metabones does not have that. Maybe it is because of my 35 1.4 Art. I have not tried the 85 1.4 Art. Also I am very curious about the FE-Nikon adapter. Can you test it more :) with more lenses. This will be HUGE about Nikon shooters with a B cam from Sony or just wondering about a switch...
Please test the commlite high speed adapter in CDAF mode on Canon and Tamron/Sigma glass. There's various tests on an A7r I with it on Canon branded glass and its quite fast. Other reviews say its meh, but they only used PDAF.
I was looking at a kamera dealer's website here in Sweden as they had a great price on the Ultra model. However, they recommended that if one was going to use a Metabones product with a Panasonic G series camera, the Ultra 0.71 model would not perform well. They recommended the Ultra XL 0.64 instead. For what technical reasons would that be the case? I've never seen anyone make that determination
Chris and Jordan, great video as usual. Thanks a lot. I'd like you to review -if it's possible- m-mount glass to Sony. There is some stuff out there but is quite confusing. I guess it might not be really popular but will help a lot of folks out there with M mount glass. I do manual focus but my eyes are aging and i would like to see how the adaptors handle AF for legacy glass. Cheers.
Which adapter works with EF-S lenses on the A6000? I heard that the commlite is decent but how is focus speed and eye af? I have Canon 50mm 1.8, 10-18mm and Sigma 70-300mm
Could you guys do a video testing Canon DPAF in video now that Sigma released new firmware for some of their Art lenses, as many forum users report it fixes the long-standing issues AF with them in live view. Would be a really useful thing to know, e.g., 18-35 f/1.8 on 5D4 video.
Hey Guys, Thank you for the video. A few quick questions. 1) How do Tamron EF lenses fare? 2) How do long zooms fare? 70-200, 100-400? 3) Would you recommend the fotodiox adapter? The one with the built in ND filter
I use a metabones speed booster with a Sony a6300 to do indoor event shooting and I have to say the combination works almost perfectly. Making the Canon L go from a F4 to F2.8 is a big boost as well. The important thing is not all Canon glass plays the same. Continuous focus with the 70-200 f2.8 L series 2 is very fast and tracks well with the Sony. In deep low light conditions, I've had to go to manual focus, but again the EF and the focus assist, it works really good for event type stuff. I've had several other photographers quiz me what the heck I was shooting, and most were surprised at the shots I was getting. The other bonus is the silent shooting. I was able to get way closer to the subject and still not distract. Looking forward to seeing how the combination works with the new Sony A7 III.
Hi, could you please review the Viltrox EF-E mark II speedbooster? This is a cheap product for adapting Canon EF full frame lenses to Sony crop bodies, and it has had a great feedback from the web. Unfortunately until now there's no enough information about the autofocus performance using this adapter.
Went to get the Commlite (version 06) for my Sony A7II. huge disappointment. The first one didn't work at all. The store found another. It worked well with my Nikon 85 mm f/1.8. Didn't work at all with my Nikon 50 mm f/1.4. I lost it, sold all my Nikon lenses at the shop and walked out with a Tamron 28-75 mm f/2.8. I'll be using e-mount stuff from now on. Will miss the 50 mm though. It's been a good, reliable friend for years.
Hi, Chris. I have the a6000 and I bought the Yongnuo adapter for my Canon glass. Mostly I wanted to use my Canon nifty fifty for night shooting. Speed was not really essential, but it turned out that I must have a factory lemon lens. It is useless under f4, even on my 5D Mark iv. I saw that the Camera Store now sells the Yongnuo 50mm so I bought it. Works great on my Canon, but the Yongnuo adapter doesn’t recognize it. Strictly manual focus shoot wide open. Yongnuo adapter works with all my Canon & Tamron lenses, but can’t recognize Yongnuo. Weird.
Hope I can add something of interest to your experiences. I have a Canon Sl2 and bought a Lumix G7 to see what that world looks like from a Photography point of view. I bought a CommLite adapter to my G7. I tried to take my Sigma 18-400mm from the SL2 to the G7 and found that the electronics translated Av and Tv but NO AF capability. I then bought a Tamron 18-400mm and was surprised that with the same adapter on the G7 - everything worked fine including the AF. I have no idea why the Sigma wouldn't work but it might be plastic vs. metal?
Nice review guys, thanks. Question, I'd like to use the Commlite on my Sony EA50 Video camera with Nikon lenses, I'm not bothered about AF as I use M/F when shooting video, what I'd like to know though is will this adaptor give me aperture/iris control when using my Nikon 200-500 G lens. Bear in mind that this lens has no aperture pin at all and relies completely on electrical connection between the Nikon body and lens.
Can I use sigma 30/1.4 lens with M50 using an EF M to EOS canon mount converter. I am able to do it. So wanted to know if I have to buy some other adapter
I have been using Micro 4/3 since the GF1. The bodies are becoming bigger, heavier and more expensive, the same can be said about the pro lenses. For travel I still use the Olympus, but for everything else the Nikon 810 and the holy trinity lenses since full frame is just better. Why use a full frame lens on a 4/3 camera? It defeats the whole purpose of the system.
People have observed that sigma generally works better with Nikon and Tamron works well with Canon. This is many times seen when using adapted Tamron glass for ef mount which often works better than adapted sigma glass for thr ef mount. I found this while researching about the new 100-400 telephoto offerings from both nikon and sigma. The reviewers with canon bodies were very happy with Tamron 100-400 and found that the sigma equivalent wasnt just fast enough (Dustin Abbott). The opposite was true for reviewers using Nikon body and suggested to stick with existing sigma 100-400.
Hi Anu I. You said that you found a Sigma adapter that works well with Tamron F-mount lens for Nikon on a Sony A7RIII body? Please provide more info. I NEED to keep my Tamron G2 lens for my Nikon Full Frame body onto a A7RIII body. This is what has held me off on purchasing the Sony body. I shoot stills only (portraiture) and an looking for a good adapter.
Can someone tell me if the model mb-ef-e-bm4 supports IBIS canon lens IS and IBIS together? Nobody seems to know I know that the MB-EF-E-BT5 and the MB-EF-E-BT4 does it. But wanted to know if the mb-ef-e-bm4 works also together at the same time. Using the same firmware as the two newer ones?
Game TL Well sigma doesn't make any m43rds adapters. I would love it if Sigma made a regular adapter, a speed booster and a 1.4x adapter for M43rds in there SA mount to M43rds. Sigma is a member of the four thirds community, has the full working knowledge of M43rds, yet does not release any adapters. This in my mind would not only push the sales of sigma lenses but also the sales of Quantro cameras. Because why not test it if you already have the glass.
Which camera in your opinion (including and mostly Jordan) will work better with Tamron 150-600mm lens: - sony A7iii or GH5/G9 for video, meaning some auto functions are available, mostly focus. And recomendations on adapter for such set up, and with additional 1.4 x or 2x converter. Thank you.
I have been using the Commlite for my Canon glass on my A6000 and A7Rii. I recently picked up the MC11 along with the Sigma 150-600 Contemporary. I've updated the lenses adapters, cameras and the USB dock. when comparing the two adapters with my Canon 24-105MK1 I found that when using the Sigma MC11 the A7Rii would not auto-stabilize and grayed out the option, but when using the Commlite in the exact same manor I was able to use auto-detect IBS with it. As an aside I am very disappointed in the fact that the apps are going away as I do mainly landscape. The Smooth Reflections and time lapse apps are invaluable to me. I hope that they are also keeping the remote control app as well. I will not be upgrading from the A7Rii to the new Mkiii due to this.
Okay, this - adapters not working well with video - leaves me with a big problem. I had planned on venturing back into the Sony world with the A7iii but still keep my very expensive L lenses. The problem stems from the fact that I want to use that setup for video. I have the Canon 5dsr along with the holy trinity of L lenses for studio, landscaping and macro work. I only have my 5dmkiii for video which doesn't work for me because of an eye issue (loss of vision) I NEED autofocus for video. What are my options besides forking over another shit tonne of CAD for lenses? Do I give up on the idea and stick with a bulky Canon?
Amazing video. I really wish there was a more affordable alternative to the Metabones, with same functionality, to be able to use the Sigma 18-35 1.8 on my GX85. Why don't Sigma and Tamron make more MFT lenses already? Market's going that way.
John Summerfield, I'd be happy if they put an MFT mount on the Sigma 18-35 1.8. With the crop factor it'd be a nice 24-70 almost, and nice aperture as well. Can't get that kind of light with the native MFT zooms.
I have a few Canon lenses (the 85 f/1.8 and 50 f/1.4), Sigma (their 24-105 f/4 and 150-600 Contemporary), AND Tamron (the 70-200 f/2.8 VC G2 and 15-30 f/2.8). I pre-ordered the a7III and plan on picking up the Sigma MC-11, but is there a chance the Metabones would be a better all-around choice for lenses from these three companies?
Sony was the first to produce a modern mirrorless camera with APS-C sensor in 2010 Sony NEX-3 and NEX-5 and the first with a full frame sensor in 2013 a7 and a7R. An unexpected success of the Sony mirrorless cameras is their ability to support nearly all autofocus lenses from major manufacturers with native and third party adapters due to their short flange distance which is even shorter than that of usually smaller mirrorless micro four-thirds cameras. The metabones speed booster is a really useful adapter because it does more than adapt deferent lens mounts. A serious omission is the native Sony LA-EA4 LensAdapter-EmountAmount which is compatible with nearly all autofocus a-mount lenses since the Minolta film era.
Love this video because you shot it on the GH5 🎥🎉 it looks awesome. I've watched a ton of GH5 reviews! But this video is actually demonstrates Gh5 in a working place scenario. Most other reviews show b-roll or wedding videos. So can you share your set up, pls? The lighting, lens adapter or native lens etc? Cheers from GH5 & 12/35mkii owner. 🤠👍
This was shot on the GH5 in 709-Like for lit interiors and V-Log L for exteriors. We used a Sigma 18-35mm on a Metabones .71x Speedbooster. It was lit with an Aputure COB 300D shooting into a LiteDome Softbox, with a Lumahawk RS 300 Shadowless light for fill. Hope this helps! Jordan @ TCSTV
I am feeling stuck somehow on this Nikon-Track. I am really hoping their Fullframe DSLM will rock and will be affordable for usual people. I love my Nikon D750 but all those minor flaws really suck and i love the advantages even my small OM-D E-M10II offers over the DSLR. Switching to Sony with all my Nikon glass seems to be no option
* * * Whats the point of having a Micro 4/3 Camera with such Big Lenses? Might as well get a DLSR...When are we going to get a better section of Mirco 4/3 Lenses for the Panasonic Cameras?..Right now on Panasonic's website there are a total of 6 Fixed Focal Length Lenses !....I refuse to buy any thing Sony.
I am using a Viltrox speed booster canon ef- M43 mount, a 50mm 1.8 and sigma 75-300, I am experiencing issues with autofocus, is this camera related (Panasonic gx80) is it firmware related? Please can anyone shed any light please?
Great video, thank you. Do you know if the sigma 150 600 Contemporary canon mount works fine with sigma mc11 on sony a7r2? Works better with the comlite? Or the vello aito adapter?
What mode did you use on the Metabones. This is important to know, green or advanced, can make a big difference. Also did you use flexible spot? I’ve seen many videos showing Canon + metabones tacking runners very well, depending on the lens. 85 f/1.4L IS should have done much better.
.i want to know if i can use this lea3 on my sony A Mount lenses on the Sony a7/3 E mount and maintain 100% of it's features?, or must i use the lea4.......the Sony cameras i use are a99/2, a99, a77/2 and a77 ? What Sony adopter will give me 100% of the lenses and cameras features ?
I'm using the Metabones IV Canon EF - Sony E on a Sony A7R II with Canon lenses: what does make the eye-AF work on the new Sony A7R III that is missing on the A7R II? I ask because the Sigma MC-11 adapter *does* allow eye-AF with Sigma lenses on my Sony A7R II. Why is that?
The Fringer EF-FX Pro adapter AF in AF-S mode on the Fuji [X-T2] is surprisingly fast. It, too, has not tripod mount (stupid!), but it does appear to be as fast as the Fuji 90mm F2 or the 50mm F2.
I have a sony a6500 and i am looking to use a 300mm lens,as i need the zoom, for sports photography , such as the tamron 16-300. What would you suggest as a adaptor/lense that will fit my camera and offer performance?
hey guys, thanks for the video. I am looking to find an adaptor for my 14mm Sigma (Nikon mount), to use on my recently purchased Sony A7R2. Any recommendations? Thanks
I have the Commlite v05 and Sony A5600.. well.. it works.. but not suitable for any demanding photography project and don't maintain focusing in continuous shooting unless you used the slow option or it will focus on the first frame only.
Ok, my question is, I'm buying the Sony A7III (sold all my Nikon gear), I'd love to have some Sigma lenses, so let's say I want to buy them with the MC-11, so do you think all lenses would work as good as the 85mm? Has to be Canon mount?
